&nbsp;Catholic Charities invites the community to a Volunteer Roundup Meeting for those interested in joining its mission at their new facility located at 1011 Centennial in Hays. This new facility will house the Catholic Charities offices and a new thrift store onsite. The meeting will take place on October 29 at 11:00 AM at the current office location, downstairs at 122 E. 12th St., Hays, KS 67601 (please note, this is not the new Centennial location).

"Our team is eagerly anticipating the completion of our new facility this fall," said Megan Robl, executive director of Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas. "While we don't have an exact opening date yet due to ongoing construction, our contractors are working hard to get everything finished up within the next several weeks. We're confident and excited to welcome our wonderful community members who want to join us in this mission of serving Hays and the surrounding area."

The new thrift store will be open to the public, accepting donations of clothing, household items, and other miscellaneous goods. The organization anticipates being able to start accepting donations in late November or early December.

At this time, there is a need to fill the thrift store volunteer schedule. Volunteers will play a vital role in the operations of the thrift store, which includes running the register, receiving and sorting donations, and assisting on the sales floor.

Community members interested in volunteering at the new Catholic Charities facility are encouraged to attend this important meeting. Those unable to attend may contact Shannon Werth, Hays Thrift Store Manager, at swerth@ccnks.org or call 785-625-2644.

In a heartwarming effort to inspire the next generation of givers, the Heartland Community Foundation is proud to announce a special initiative for Give Fest 2024: Every 5th grader in Ellis, Rooks, and Trego counties will receive $10 to donate to a local nonprofit of their choice! Thanks to the generous support of Insurance Planning, Inc. and the Fred &amp; Jean Berger, Insurance Planning, Inc. Charitable Fund in Ellis County, and Solutions North Bank in Rooks and Trego counties, all 5th grade students will have the opportunity to learn firsthand about the power of philanthropy.

On October 10, students will visit the Give Fest events in Hays, Plainville, and WaKeeney to meet participating nonprofits, learn about their missions, and choose where to allocate their $10 voucher. This initiative is designed to foster an early understanding of charitable giving and community support among young people.

“We believe in the importance of starting early when it comes to charitable giving,” said Andrew Rupp at Insurance Planning, Inc. “By giving these students the opportunity to choose where their donation goes, we hope to empower them to feel the impact of their gift and to understand the importance of supporting local causes.”

Solutions North Bank, which is sponsoring the initiative in Rooks and Trego counties, shares the same commitment. “Helping young people connect with their community in this way teaches them that even small contributions can make a big difference. It’s an investment not just in today’s nonprofits, but in the future of philanthropy,” said Shana Coleman at Solutions North Bank.

In the days leading up to Give Fest, representatives from the Heartland Community Foundation will visit area schools to introduce students to the idea of giving back. “We’re excited to talk with students about what it means to be a nonprofit and why supporting local organizations matters,” said Sarah Meitner, Executive Director of the Heartland Community Foundation. “It’s inspiring to

see young people get involved and understand that, no matter their age, they can make a real difference in their community.”

Give Fest 2024, happening on October 10, is a celebration of philanthropy, community spirit, and cultural heritage with an Oktoberfest twist. The event spans Ellis, Rooks, and Trego counties, offering in-person opportunities for donors to meet local nonprofits, enjoy Oktoberfest food and entertainment, and make a meaningful impact. With 44 participating organizations, there’s a cause for everyone, from education and healthcare to animal welfare, emergency response, and more.

All donations made to participating nonprofits during the 24-hour giving period will be matched up to 100% by the Heartland Community Foundation, thanks to a $150,000 match pool. Donations will go directly to the nonprofits' endowed funds at the foundation, ensuring a stable financial future, while match dollars provide immediate support for current needs.

Give Fest 2024: Get ready to give and celebrate

Wesley Dean
Flinn, 56, of Ellis, Kansas, passed away on September 25th, 2024, in his truck
in Summit, Illinois.&nbsp; He was born in
Oakley, Kansas, on January 9th, 1968, to Arnold and Belva Flinn.&nbsp; He was the youngest of three boys.

Wes was an over-the-road
truck driver for several years and spent five years running his own business, a
car detail shop in Hays, along with driving for some local trucking
companies.&nbsp; He was always in a hurry to
get home and see his wife and family.&nbsp;
When Wes wasn’t in the truck, he enjoyed collecting and working on
pickups and has always loved loud exhaust, his pet snakes, and his dogs and
cat.

Wes had two
children:&nbsp; his son Nathan Barnhardt and
daughter Bridget Schlereth.&nbsp; Wes started
dating Rhonda Tauber and was married in 2005.&nbsp;
Through this union, he gained three more children:&nbsp; Wesley, Tony, and Trista.

Wes was
preceded in death by his father, Arnold, son, Nathan, and step-brother, Dustin
Richardson.

Wes is survived
by his wife Rhonda of the home, mother Belva, daughter Bridget Schlereth,
step-sons:&nbsp; Wesley (Anna) Gilliland and
Tony Gilliland, step-daughter, Trista (Jordan) Komarek; mother and
father-in-law, Delores (Verlin) Richardson and his father-in-law Charles
Tauber; brothers:&nbsp; Rick Flinn and Mitch

Wesley Dean Flinn

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of William Michael Schwarz, on September 19, 2024. Bill was beloved as a dad, grandpa, husband, brother, uncle and friend who positively touched the lives of everyone he met. His unexpected departure leaves a deep void in our hearts.

Bill was born on October 6, 1946, in Colby, Kansas; the second of Fred and Marie (Moellering) Schwarz’s five children. He enjoyed riding horses as he was raised on a farm outside Angelus, KS. While attending grade school in Angelus, a 4H chapter was available for a couple of years. Bill picked out one of his dad’s steers to raise. FLECK was so calm that he became a family pet, and Bill gave his siblings rides on his back. All three at the same time. Fleck was reserve grand champion at the county fair, and after the auction, tears flowed every time he saw cattle. He excelled in high school at St Joseph’s Military Academy in Hays, KS, where he was a top marksman on the school’s rifle team. Upon completion of high school, he helped build I-70 from Goodland to Russell, KS and joined the Kansas National Guard in Colby. He then became a mechanic for Hooker Chevy-Olds in Oakley, and soon met the love of his life, Linda Sidles. They were married on July 13, 1968, and lived in Oakley their entire married lives. Bill and Linda could be found at a lake fishing and camping most weekends, even after 6-day work schedules! They hosted many fish fries with their bountiful catches. Soon after their marriage, Bill joined Oakley’s Volunteer Fire Department which had recently added rural firefighting equipment. He was still a proud member after 55 years of service, possibly the longest in the department’s history!

Bill and Linda opened a BIG A parts store in 1985, switching to NAPA in 1999. They expanded services like making hydraulic hoses, turning brake rotors, and rebuilding alternators to better serve the community. Quality customer service included a bag of popcorn or a knife sharpening. They ran the store together until selling it in 2008. He continued working at NAPA for a few years after the sale. In retirement, Bill loved to help farmers at harvest time, hauling many loads of wheat and corn. He also helped check and service oil wells in the Oakley area up to the present time. He loved driving around the countryside, seeing wildlife, and how the crops were doing. Checking wells was a great way to do that.

After repairing a pickup which was traded in at Hooker’s and entering it at a truck and tractor pull at the county fair in 1979, he was smitten with a desire to build a competitive 4wd pulling pickup. He remembered towing a 62 Chevy with a blown engine off the highway which wasn’t worth fixing a few years before. He scrounged junk yards to find it and other parts, and since everything for his pulling pickup came from a junk yard except for the tires, he appropriately named his 62 Chevy the “Junk Yard Dog” and began pulling with it in 1980. He and the ‘Dog’ were season points champions more often than not and have been a crowd favorite ever since. Bill became a respected member and friend to all in the pulling circuit, always willing to help his fellow competitors, but keeping a few secrets that were learned the hard way! He rarely divulged his gear ratio, tire pressures, or that his engine developed over 1700 HP. How much more - we can only guess!! Be assured that everything on the Dog was legal because Bill’s code of honor would not allow anything else.

When God looked at Bill, we think He smiled, because what He saw was a person who put ‘other’s needs’ above his own ‘wants’, a person who ‘gave’ much more than he ‘took’, and one who respected others even if they didn’t share the same views. Bill cared deeply for his family, especially his 7 grandchildren, being their ‘go to’ sitter, and attended as many of their school and sporting events as possible – the seven grand’s events kept him busy! He loved them all as they were his greatest joy! He could be found at The Bluff most days since 1998 when Brian opened it and later when BJ took ownership - either eating - visiting - - - or fixing something. There were very few things that Bill couldn’t fix around a house, yard, equipment at a business or farm, or on a vehicle. He even modified his motor home/semi to run on recycled cooking oil! Thanks, BJ, for supplying fuel to get to his truck pulls.

Bill is survived by sons Brian (Lexy) Schwarz of Salina (grandsons Brazyn and Boxtyn) and Bradley (Alisha) Schwarz of Oakley (grandchildren Adisyn, William, Jacob, Matthew, and Zachary), sister Mary Lou (Rick) Mastin of Hays, brother Larry (Ann) Schwarz of Fort Collins, CO, and sister Betty (Terry) Hockersmith of Oakley along with many beloved nieces and nephews. Fulfilling Bill’s desire to be an organ donor, the life of a 62-year-old man has already been extended from a liver transplant. Bill was beloved as a dad, grandpa, husband, brother, uncle and friend who positively touched the lives of everyone he met. His unexpected departure leaves a deep void in our hearts.Bill was born on October 6, 1946, in Colby, Kansas; the second of Fred and Marie (Moellering) Schwarz’s five children. He enjoyed riding horses as he was raised on a farm outside Angelus, KS. While attending grade school in Angelus, a 4H chapter was available for a couple of years. Bill picked out one of his dad’s steers to raise. FLECK was so calm that he became a family pet, and Bill gave his siblings rides on his back. All three at the same time. Fleck was reserve grand champion at the county fair, and after the auction, tears flowed every time he saw cattle. He excelled in high school at St Joseph’s Military Academy in Hays, KS, where he was a top marksman on the school’s rifle team. Upon completion of high school, he helped build I-70 from Goodland to Russell, KS and joined the Kansas National Guard in Colby. He then became a mechanic for Hooker Chevy-Olds in Oakley, and soon met the love of his life, Linda Sidles. They were married on July 13, 1968, and lived in Oakley their entire married lives. Bill and Linda could be found at a lake fishing and camping most weekends, even after 6-day work schedules! They hosted many fish fries with their bountiful catches. Soon after their marriage, Bill joined Oakley’s Volunteer Fire Department which had recently added rural firefighting equipment. He was still a proud member after 55 years of service, possibly the longest in the department’s history!Bill and Linda opened a BIG A parts store in 1985, switching to NAPA in 1999. They expanded services like making hydraulic hoses, turning brake rotors, and rebuilding alternators to better serve the community. Quality customer service included a bag of popcorn or a knife sharpening. They ran the store together until selling it in 2008. He continued working at NAPA for a few years after the sale. In retirement, Bill loved to help farmers at harvest time, hauling many loads of wheat and corn. He also helped check and service oil wells in the Oakley area up to the present time. He loved driving around the countryside, seeing wildlife, and how the crops were doing. Checking wells was a great way to do that.After repairing a pickup which was traded in at Hooker’s and entering it at a truck and tractor pull at the county fair in 1979, he was smitten with a desire to build a competitive 4wd pulling pickup. He remembered towing a 62 Chevy with a blown engine off the highway which wasn’t worth fixing a few years before. He scrounged junk yards to find it and other parts, and since everything for his pulling pickup came from a junk yard except for the tires, he appropriately named his 62 Chevy the “Junk Yard Dog” and began pulling with it in 1980. He and the ‘Dog’ were season points champions more often than not and have been a crowd favorite ever since. Bill became a respected member and friend to all in the pulling circuit, always willing to help his fellow competitors, but keeping a few secrets that were learned the hard way! He rarely divulged his gear ratio, tire pressures, or that his engine developed over 1700 HP. How much more - we can only guess!! Be assured that everything on the Dog was legal because Bill’s code of honor would not allow anything else.When God looked at Bill, we think He smiled, because what He saw was a person who put ‘other’s needs’ above his own ‘wants’, a person who ‘gave’ much more than he ‘took’, and one who respected others even if they didn’t share the same views. Bill cared deeply for his family, especially his 7 grandchildren, being their ‘go to’ sitter, and attended as many of their school and sporting events as possible – the seven grand’s events kept him busy! He loved them all as they were his greatest joy! He could be found at The Bluff most days since 1998 when Brian opened it and later when BJ took ownership - either eating - visiting - - - or fixing something. There were very few things that Bill couldn’t fix around a house, yard, equipment at a business or farm, or on a vehicle. He even modified his motor home/semi to run on recycled cooking oil! William "Bill" Michael Schwarz

Robert Dale Wallsmith was born in Wichita Kansas on June 14, 1948. He passed away from cancer on August 25, 2024. He was the youngest of five siblings. Beverly French of Carbondale, Kansas, Michael Wallsmith (deceased) of South Carolina, Phillip Wallsmith of Topeka, Kansas, and Thomas Wallsmith (deceased) of Levant, Kansas. Bob was raised on a farm north of Levant, Kansas by Fred and Wilma Wallsmith (both deceased). Much of his childhood was spent helping around the farm and even digging their swimming pool for recreation. They also raised hunting dogs. Bob's love for guns and hunting would last him a lifetime. He would later share this hobby with his children, nephews, neighbor kids, and grandchildren. Bob attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Colby, KS and then graduated from High School in Brewster, Kansas in 1967. He was a graduate of Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;

Over the years Bob worked in many professions. He worked at Service Oil Company in Colby, KS for many years. He owned the Grocery store in Brewster, KS. He worked as a mechanic at meatpacking plants in Colorado, Nebraska, Georgia, and Texas. Everywhere he went he made close contacts that he kept in touch with.&nbsp;

Bob was especially close with his grandkids. They have many great memories with him. The youngest, Hunter, recalls learning to drive with Grandpa’s 3-speed pickup in the yard. Caleb remembers shooting his first dove crouched down in a ditch with grandpa and his dad. Ashley says grandpa was always ready to help me. He even mowed my lawn when I lived in Brewster. Alexis will never forget getting 1000 kisses and neither will her kids! She was also very fond of her morning coffee dates with her mom and grandpa. Amber and grandpa always had a great time on the dance floor and when she started beauty school her biggest tip ever came from Grandpa Bob! Zebulun was named by grandpa. Alicia always looked forward to visiting Grandpa in Denver. She said he was as excited about our adventures such as the color run and zombie run as we were. She will never forget watching him wave goodbye from his yard as we got on the interstate to go home. Missy would love to say her best memory was all the times he stopped by and had dinner with her family in Brewster but it is actually dancing with him when she was a little girl! He was so energetic and fun. He spun her round and round and she thought he was the best dancer in the world! Tyler remembers getting a tool set from grandpa when he was very young. Grandpa took the time to go through each tool and tell him what it was called. He remembers asking him “Who is Allen?” when he got to the allen wrenches. He was very supportive of all that they did and made time for each of them.&nbsp;

Bob is survived by his three children, Julie Williams of Brewster, Kansas, Matthew (Stacy) Wallsmith of El Dorado, Kansas, and Jessica (Jim) House of Hays, Kansas. Ten grandchildren, Zebulun Wallsmith (Courtney Ress) of Colby, KS, Alexis (Wyatt) Werth of Winona, KS, Tyler Williams of Stockton, KS, Chevy Buck of Ark City, KS, Melissa (Aaron) Mann of Brewster, KS, Amber (Matthew) Isley of Hays, KS, Robert Caleb (Madison) of Wichita, KS, Ashley Barrie of Hays, KS, Alicia (Eric) Rincon of Hays, KS, and Hunter House of Hays, KS. And also twenty-five great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

To Bob, family was much more than blood. He also leaves behind many special friends that he made over the years. The Faber family, Robert Lehman, Stefan Toth, Sam Bailey and Bill Nopens. Just to name a few. The Galloway and Goss families of Denver and many exchange students throughout the world will forever think of him as “Grandpa Bob” and they all held a special place in his heart.&nbsp;

Veterans Claims and Benefits Clinic planned

Kansas Lt. Gov. David Toland discussed the economic wins of the Kelly administration and what the Department of Commerce plans for future development at a Chamber in Hays luncheon on Friday.

Toland also serves as the Kansas Secretary of the Department of Commerce.

Between 2019 and 2024, Gov. Kelly's administration generated 19.7 million in private business investment in Kansas and retained or created 67,912 jobs. About 15% of the jobs were retained from moving to other states or overseas.

Toland said Kansas has been on the defense to keep other states like Missouri from poaching its businesses and jobs.

"I'm not talking about federal grants or COVID money or stimulus or any of that," Toland said. "I'm talking about businesses that get to make a decision on where they invest, and in unprecedented numbers in our history, they are choosing to invest in Kansas."

He said the growth is a combination of new businesses and existing businesses expanding in the state.

The second-largest economic project in the state during the Kelly administration has been in northwest Kansas— the Amber Wave wheat protein facility in Phillipsburg. That project was a $670 million investment.

Private business investment in the state grew steadily from $1.3 billion in 2019 to $3.8 billion in 2021.

"2020 was COVID. As a state, we had a decision to make. Are we going to pause and wait and see what happens as the global economy collapses, or do we hit the gas?" Toland said. The decision we made as a state—as an administration—was to hit the gas."

Private investment peaked at $7.4 billion before settling back at $3.1 billion in 2023. The state has about $1.8 billion in private investment so far this year, but multiple major projects are in the works for this fall, Toland said.

Although unemployment has inched up across the state, including Ellis County, which was at 3.1% in June, Tolland said in an interview after his presentation that anything less than 4% is still considered low.

He said the state is closely monitoring the employment data, but there is no need for alarm.

Kansas still has 100,000 open positions—50,000 are listed on <a href="https://www.kansasworks.com/">KANSASWORKS</a>.

Although&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/b6494bc6-04be-4643-a7e4-7d558c627ad2" target="_blank">EnerSys, an industrial battery manufacturer,&nbsp;</a>announced layoffs in May and&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/1c08eb9c-3e48-4018-80f6-5414bb427eac" target="_blank">Amphenol</a>&nbsp;Adronics, which manufactures antennas and vehicles, closed its Hays plant earlier this year, Toland said the Microfactory is poised to bring in new manufacturing businesses and jobs to Hays.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/086b27b6-fc06-490d-91ed-833bbf3e82cd">The MicroFacroty is a $4.5 million, 30,000-square-foot facility that was constructed to attract startup manufacturers or those wishing to expand to Hays.</a> The Kansas Department of Commerce contributed $2.6 million in a BASE grant for that project.

The ribbon was cut on the facility in March.

"[The MicroFactory's] very presence is a tangible reflection of this community's commitment to manufacturing and business development," Toland said.

He said he had personally spoken to two businesses interested in Hays. 

"I'm confident that we are going to have a win soon," Toland said.

Doug Williams, executive director of Grow Hays, said the economic development organization has seven to 10 businesses in the pipeline for possible rental of the space in the Microfactory.&nbsp;He said Grow Hays wants to ensure it finds manufacturers that are the right fit for the facility and Hays.

Toland also said housing is essential to recruiting talent to Kansas, and Hays has been aggressively addressing that issue.

"With the housing shortage we're seeing in northwest Kansas and across the state getting more acute with the growth that we are seeing in this part of the state, we've got to make certain that new rooftops are going up," he said.

Other Department of Commerce investments in Ellis County have included <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/9108b04d-d307-4e44-b588-f0405d5575ae">$115,000 for renovations for the Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas building in Hays</a>, $150,000 for DSNWK, $2.3 million for workforce retention through Fort Hays State University, <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/4493d3ca-7a48-4f10-9a84-c20923e7d68c">a $75,000 HEAL Grant for Chestnut Suites in Hays</a> and a $594,000 BASE grant for Gella's Diner.

"We have really tried to be focused and be intentional on making investments in Hays and Ellis County, knowing that this is the retail and commercial job center in this part of the state," Toland said.

When companies are looking to invest, they want to make sure there will be places for their workers to live, he said.

He said Hays also does well in investing in quality of life. This has included $6,500 in operational support for the Hays Community Theatre and $22,000 for the Hays Arts Council.

Toland gave kudos to Ellis County's work to reduce the number of needed child care slots in the county from 800 to what will soon be 330.

Sara Bloom, who is from Hays, is the child care advocate for the Kansas Department of Commerce. She said the Child Care Task Force of Ellis County, which is facilitated by the Chamber in Hays and Sarah Wasinger, deserves all the credit for reducing that care gap.

"There has been a focused effort in this county to solve the child care shortage here," Toland said, "and that matters because businesses that are trying to hire people need to be able to hire people who are often at child-bearing age. They want to know that their children are well taken care of while they are working.

"If you don't have child care slots, a lot of people choose not to work," he said.

Toland also touched on the state's new "Love, Kansas" initiative, which aims to bring workers who once lived in Kansas back home.

Hays is one of 19 cities in Kansas to pilot the program.

Toland, an Iola native, left Kansas after graduating from The University of Kansas for a job on the East Coast.&nbsp;

After he and his wife had their daughter, he decided they didn't want her to grow up playing in their 4-foot-by-4-foot front yard. The family moved back to Kansas.

"The Love, Kansas program is about taking someone who graduated from Hays High School, maybe 10 years ago or 20 years ago, you decide," Toland said, "and using local people who know those graduates to make a pitch to them—to reach out to them directly and say, 'Hey, do you know all of the great things that are happening in Hays?'"

He added, "We have 100,000 open jobs. We have wonderful communities that offer such a high quality of life and are welcoming places, so let's go out there and bring our people back to Hays, to Ellis County, to northwest Kansas, to Kansas."

"I'm confident that we are going to have a win soon," Toland said.Doug Williams, executive director of Grow Hays, said the economic development organization has seven to 10 businesses in the pipeline for possible rental of the space in the Microfactory.&nbsp;He said Grow Hays wants to ensure it finds manufacturers that are the right fit for the facility and Hays.Toland also said housing is essential to recruiting talent to Kansas, and Hays has been aggressively addressing that issue."With the housing shortage we're seeing in northwest Kansas and across the state getting more acute with the growth that we are seeing in this part of the state, we've got to make certain that new rooftops are going up," he said.Other Department of Commerce investments in Ellis County have included <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/9108b04d-d307-4e44-b588-f0405d5575ae">$115,000 for renovations for the Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas building in Hays</a>, $150,000 for DSNWK, $2.3 million for workforce retention through Fort Hays State University, <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/4493d3ca-7a48-4f10-9a84-c20923e7d68c">a $75,000 HEAL Grant for Chestnut Suites in Hays</a> and a $594,000 BASE grant for Gella's Diner."We have really tried to be focused and be intentional on making investments in Hays and Ellis County, knowing that this is the retail and commercial job center in this part of the state," Toland said.When companies are looking to invest, they want to make sure there will be places for their workers to live, he said.He said Hays also does well in investing in quality of life. This has included $6,500 in operational support for the Hays Community Theatre and $22,000 for the Hays Arts Council.Toland gave kudos to Ellis County's work to reduce the number of needed child care slots in the county from 800 to what will soon be 330.Sara Bloom, who is from Hays, is the child care advocate for the Kansas Department of Commerce. She said the Child Care Task Force of Ellis County, which is facilitated by the Chamber in Hays and Sarah Wasinger, deserves all the credit for reducing that care gap."There has been a focused effort in this county to solve the child care shortage here," Toland said, "and that matters because businesses that are trying to hire people need to be able to hire people who are often at child-bearing age. They want to know that their children are well taken care of while they are working."If you don't have child care slots, a lot of people choose not to work," he said.Toland also touched on the state's new "Love, Kansas" initiative, which aims to bring workers who once lived in Kansas back home.Hays is one of 19 cities in Kansas to pilot the program.Toland, an Iola native, left Kansas after graduating from The University of Kansas for a job on the East Coast.&nbsp;After he and his wife had their daughter, he decided they didn't want her to grow up playing in their 4-foot-by-4-foot front yard. The family moved back to Kansas."The Love, Kansas program is about taking someone who graduated from Hays High School, maybe 10 years ago or 20 years ago, you decide," Toland said, "and using local people who know those graduates to make a pitch to them—to reach out to them directly and say, 'Hey, do you know all of the great things that are happening in Hays?'"He added, "We have 100,000 open jobs. We have wonderful communities that offer such a high quality of life and are welcoming places, so let's go out there and bring our people back to Hays, to Ellis County, to northwest Kansas, to Kansas."

KS Lt. Governor Toland touts economic investment in Ellis County

Karol Ann (Kruse) Swart, 79, of Grinnell, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at home with her family by her side, after battling dementia. She was born at 12:32 a.m. on October 15, 1944, in Colby, KS, to Ralph and Armella (Lintel) Kruse and weighed in at 9lbs 2oz. Karol received her first haircut at six weeks old, so her mom could mail it to her dad who was serving in the Navy. She grew up on a farm southwest of Oakley and was the oldest of eight kids. Karol graduated from Oakley High School and attended Fort Hays State University.

On January 29, 1964, Karol married the love of her life, Terry Swart, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Oakley. They met at the Dairy King, where Karol worked in high school. They lived a wonderful life together on the Swart Ranch, located 20 miles south of Grinnell. There they raised their two children, Amy and Terrall, who were Karol’s pride and joy.

Through the years they raised pigs, a cow and calf herd, horses, bucket calves, dogs, cats, rabbits and ran a fat cattle feedlot. Terry and Karol made their dream house plans become a reality when their new house was built in 1975, smack dab in the middle of their pasture. Terry calls it “God’s Country”. 

Karol said she always wanted to live in town, but when the opportunity arose, she fought to stay on the ranch.

After the kids were older, Karol went to work in Oakley. She worked at Mitten’s Skelly Truck Stop as a cook and Amy joined her there as a waitress. Later they both worked together at the Colonial Steakhouse. Karol also worked at the Oakley School Cafeteria and later she and Terry worked together at Warren’s IGA. Karol had a gift to cook!

After her kids were grown, Karol attended the Liberal Truck Driving School. Upon graduating, her and Terry team drove a semi, for Barnett Trucking, all over the country, coast to coast. They called themselves “Paid Snowbirds”. This allowed them to travel and see many states.

Karol’s kids were her pride and joy, but then came her first grandchild, Jason. It was love at first sight; she enjoyed every minute with him! Seven years later she was doubly blessed with twin granddaughters, Ashley and Emily. She couldn’t get enough of the three of them and spent lots of time babysitting. Karol was a fun grandma, spoiling them rotten and taking them on many adventures as they grew up. Being a grandma was great, but then came her four great grandkids: Mia and Chelsey Reyes and Baylor and Eli Chartier. All four were perfect in her eyes. Together they carried on the grandkid adventures with fun on the ranch riding 4-wheelers, sledding, climbing the bluffs, painting, coloring and putting together puzzles. They took road trips to swimming pools, water slides, zoos and the lake. Her kids, grandkids and great grandkids were blessed with a life full of fun and love with her. Memories that will be cherished forever.

Karol lived the best life with her husband Terry by her side through all of it. She enjoyed farm life, caring for her kids and farm animals, cooking and gardening. Through the years she enjoyed various hobbies: crafting, taking pictures, scrapbooking, ceramic and tole painting, sewing, quilting, coloring, puzzles, puzzle books, wildflowers and bird watching. Karol was an avid Elvis fan, believing someday he would come for her. She was also a huge Billy Ray Cyrus fan, dragging Terry and family to various states to attend his concerts.

Karol is survived by her husband of 60 years, Terry Swart; children, Amy (Larry) Smith, of Dodge City and Terrall (Stephanie) Swart of Hays; grandchildren, Jason Swart, Ashley (Josh) Chartier and Emily (Gustavo) Reyes, all of Hays and great grandchildren, Baylor and Eli Chartier and Mia and Chelsey Reyes. Upon Terrall’s marriage to Stephanie, she gained more grandchildren, Chelsea (Ryder) Eakin, of Hays, and Paige (Alex) Nuss, of Hutchison, and great grandchildren, Callie, Carson and Caylor Eakin and Easton and Beckett Nuss. She is also survived by her siblings and in-laws, Lanny Hockersmith, Rodney (Mary Lou) Kruse, Butch (Cheri) Kruse, Connie Evans, Berny (Missy) Kruse, Janice Wilkening, and Robert (Chan) Kruse; her aunts, Geraldine Swart and Dixie Lintel and 25 nieces and nephews and their families. She loved family get togethers and loved all the kids.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Herman and Mary Lintel and Ben and Carrie Kruse; her parents, Ralph and Armella Kruse; in-laws, Leonard and Elizabeth Swart; sister, Marilyn Hockersmith; sister-in-law Connie (Dennis) Dawson; brother-in-law Rod Wilkening; aunts and uncles, Marietta Coats, Elaine Hammerschmidt, Eunice Weber, LaVerna Robben, Lila Heier and Donnie Lintel; an infant son Paul and her cat Lilly.

Ok, I know I have already had an article on chinch bugs, but I thought I would wrap it up with a quick overview and summary of some keys points to ponder for farmers when facing them again next year.

Chinch bugs in Kansas are a perennial pest of just about any type of grass. Since they are true bugs, chinch bugs may attack any grass where they insert their mouthparts into the plants and suck out the juice.

They have caused problems in turf farms, golf courses, and lawns. In crops, they mainly affect sorghum and sorghum/sudan hay fields, but are occasionally problematic in corn and wheat.

Primarily, it is because of timing. As wheat is quickly maturing, chinch bug nymphs, which have been feeding on the wheat until the plants started drying, move elsewhere, seeking a new food source. Often, this is seedling sorghum or sorghum/sudan planted adjacent to those wheat fields that are now maturing, but in which the chinch bugs were perfectly happy feeding. This is called the walking migration because these nymphs can't fly or jump. They walk out of the maturing wheat seeking succulent grass to feed on. However, these small nymphs can only live a few days without food and can only walk about 50 yards without finding a suitable food source, says Jeff Whitworkh K-State Extension Entomologists.

Furthermore, it needs to be noted that the first generation of chinch bug nymphs migrating out of the wheat will not migrate through the entire sorghum field, and thus that is why you get the edge effect, of anywhere between 6 to 16 rows, give or take, of plants being affected.

There are two generations of chinch bugs in Kansas each growing season. But the first generation that is coming out of mature wheat fields and feeding on young seedling sorghum or sorghum/sudan plants is the main concern. Generally, by the time the second generation of chinch bugs nymphs are hatching and feeding, the sorghum and sorghum/sudan plants are big enough to withstand the feeding and will continue to grow well.

Insecticide-treated seed also helps as the nymphs seem susceptible. However, the bugs need to feed on the plant juice to get the toxin, and if there are too many bugs inserting their mouthparts and sucking out the fluid, especially on seedling plants or plants under less than ideal growing conditions, this may kill the bug, but also kill the small plant.

Last year, in 2023, much of Kansas experienced large populations of chinch bugs, so there were potentially large numbers going into the fall/winter. And this year, sure enough the number of chinch bugs was probably in all estimations the largest we have seen to date.

Also, because they float, says Withworth, chinch bugs do not generally drown in heavy rain. So, water running off infested wheat fields moves chinch bugs, often accumulating wherever runoff water pools. Good growing conditions really help plants withstand chinch bug feeding though. So once sorghum plants get bigger they can withstand the feeding of the chinch bugs without killing the plants.

The first generation of nymphs produced now has most likely became adults. Then they mate and start the process all over again for another generation, (two generations in KS each year) which will then move to fall-planted wheat, then on to overwintering sites. They overwinter in bunch grasses then move to wheat in the spring to deposit eggs and start all over again.

CAMPBELL: Understanding chinch bugs

Anthony "Tony" D. Votaw of Ithaca, NY passed away on July 6, 2024, at the age of 67 in Kansas City, Missouri. 

Born on July 3, 1957, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Tony grew up in Hays, Kansas, where he attended Hays High School. He furthered his education at Fort Hays State University and Wichita State University. Tony dedicated a significant part of his life to the healthcare sector, retiring in 2022 as the Vice President of Cayuga Health System in Ithaca, New York. 

Renowned for his hands-on leadership style, Tony was a familiar face throughout the health system, known for his routine checks to ensure the safety and well-being of both patients and staff. His commitment to operational excellence and compassionate leadership left a lasting impact on his colleagues and the community. Outside of his career, Tony was an avid pool player in his younger years. 

He cherished and loved his family, taking immense pride in Travis and Sara’s accomplishments especially their service to our country. He loved Polly’s sons as his own. While he may not have been the “play catch” kind of grandpa, he showed up to the important events in all the grandchildren’s lives no matter how far we needed to travel ..even Alaska in February! He was blessed to see his oldest granddaughter Kirsten graduate from high school, then college and then get married. He was so proud of her as she has grown and advanced her career as a Music Teacher in a rural Kansas school district. “Lily week” was established when Lily started spending a week with us each summer and was a tradition even through his illness. 

The grandsons, while perhaps a bit rambunctious at times, helped Tony to see that having family physically close by was something to be cherished. Tony’s “love language” was making sure everyone was safe and happy..and we felt it every day.

 Tony is survived by his loving wife, Polly Votaw of Ithaca, NY; children, Travis (Penny) Votaw of Lansing, KS, and Sara (Brad) August of Lansing, KS; stepsons, Tim (Lisa) Parsons of Freeville, NY, and Matt (Ruthanne) Parsons of Groton, NY; his father, Charles Votaw of Hays, KS; and sister, Brenda McMillin of Hays, KS. He was a proud grandfather to Kirsten (Ryan) Smallwood, Lily August, Connor and Colin Parsons, and Owen Parsons, among extended family members. 

Tony was preceded in death by his mother, Zireta Votaw, who passed away just weeks before him on June 14, 2024. 

Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family in Hays, Kansas, and Ithaca, New York. Belden-Larkin Funeral Home in Leavenworth, KS, is assisting the family.

Maribeth Ann (Middleton) Delehoy, aged 79, passed away Wednesday July 3, 2024, at Citizens Medical Center in Colby, KS.

Maribeth was born May 16, 1945, to Ernest and Waneta (Roberts) Middleton. She was the second of four children including older sister Glenda (Bob) Seibert and younger siblings, Dale Middleton (Deb Johnson) and Gayle (Fred) Allen. The four of them were quite close and created many cherished memories together as kids and continued building those memories as they became adults and started raising families of their own. The four siblings were blessed to be able to raise their children in the same town for many years. After her sisters passed away Maribeth wanted to spend as much time as possible with her brother Dale.

Maribeth was a graduate of Goodland High School and attended Brown Mackey College in Salina KS. On June 14, 1964, she married the love of her life Gerold Delehoy. To this union four children were born, David (Sheila), of Brockton MA, Dana (Tim) Moss, of Selden KS, Douglas Delehoy, of Tuscaloosa AL, and Dustin Delehoy, formerly of Paris IL. She also considered Dana's best friend Sheila Williams a bonus daughter.

Maribeth was a loving mother to 4 children, grandmother to 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, a sister, an aunt to several nieces, nephews, and a friend to many throughout her life. She will be missed by those who knew her best.Some of Maribeth’s interests were going to the casinos, crossword/ crostyx puzzles, Native American history, and going to the movies. Maribeth enjoyed all genres of music and loved to dance. Some of her daughter's fondest memories of her were remembering how she used to dance in the house while listening to records. She and her daughter went on several “adventures” together as well as concerts and plays.

Maribeth also enjoyed golfing and painting, even though she didn't feel she was good at either one, she always made the most out of the time she spent doing the things she loved by creating as much laughter as she possibly could doing them. Many stories have been told about golf games with her sons and grandson Nathan. Her niece Tammy took her to painting classes at the Hays public library, oh the stories and belly laughs that have come from those classes and Maribeth’s “Nefertiti’s” cat painting are endless. She could “hang with the best of them” she used to say jokingly.

Debating or discussing politics with people was also something she liked to do, especially so with her two youngest sons. She spoke often of her trips to go visit her oldest son and the jokes he played on her and what a wonderful host he was.

To say Maribeth was extremely proud of the kind of people her children became and the families they have is truly an understatement. Maribeth repeatedly said how grateful and blessed she was to have the children she had and that she “didn't know what she would have ever done without them.”Her 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren were honestly her prized possessions. She enjoyed spending time with them playing games, teasing them and creating laughs galore with each of them. Her great-grandchildren became a whole new generation to share her life and love with and she tried to show that in as many ways as she could with the miles between them but mentioned many times how she “wished she lived closer to them all so they could get to know her better.”Maribeth was also very close to her many nieces and nephews as she watched them all grow into adults. Maribeth always made time for anyone in the family who needed a shoulder to cry on, advice, or just to have someone to hang with when needed.

She was preceded in death by her great grandparents Robert and Pauline Roberts; her parents Ernest and Waneta Middleton; her forever love Gerold Delehoy; her sisters, Glenda Seibert and Gayle Allen; and her youngest son Dustin Delehoy.

After efforts over the last several years to increase the number of child care slots available in Ellis County, in-home child care providers are expressing concerns about filling their child care spots.

Child Care Aware, the state referral agency for child care, is still estimating a deficit of <a href="https://ks.childcareaware.org/data-research/">410 child care spots in Ellis County, according to Child Care Aware data as of Wednesday.</a>

The Child Care Task Force of Ellis County members on Tuesday night discussed ways to connect families needing care with providers who have open spots.

Andrea Hoss, in-home child care provider, said she once had a waiting list, but now she struggles to find children to fill her child care.

Hoss said next August she will be losing four children to kindergarten.

"It's next year that I'm really getting stressed about," she said.

Hoss said she has been in contact with two in-home providers who may be closing their businesses because they can't fill all of their spots.

"That's the biggest obstacle," Hoss said. "Most everyone has one or two open slots in my circle of people."

Donna Hudson-Hamilton, Early Childhood Connections director, said ECC has funds to partner with private child care providers to provide care to children who are on the waiting list for its programs.

The Department of Children and Family Service pays part of the cost of some spots, and ECC pays the rest.

The providers must meet requirements to participate. All the spots need to be for full-time care.

The providers retain their businesses, and the ECC contracts with providers, Hudson-Hamilton said.

Not all of the slots require the provider to be Department of Children and Family Services certified, but if providers are certified, they would be eligible to care for more children across programs, Hudson-Hamilton said.

ECC can also assist with some equipment if providers meet grant requirements, training and curriculum.

The task force also voted to renew a marketing campaign with Eagle Communications, which will promote information about how families can find child care and how to choose a child care provider.

Dana Stanton, child care program specialist for the Northwest Kansas Economic Innovation Center, said although foundations are willing to provide funds to support nonprofits, funds are not as available for for-profit providers.

Tori Ruder, in-home provider, said funds are needed for established providers to replace equipment.

Providers said these extra costs are beginning to fall on families.

Ruder said one local provider charges an annual enrollment fee to help cover supplies and equipment.

Hoss said she requires her families to provide a portable playpen and fitted sheet for new infants.

Sarah Wasinger, task force facilitator, said the group is working to become a partnership with the K-State 105 program.

The partnership could involve offering providers safety equipment such as carbon dioxide detectors, batteries for detectors, flashlights, first-aid kits and other safety supplies.

The task force is offering free fingerprinting services for childcare providers. Fingerprints are required for background checks and child care worker certification.

The next fingerprinting dates are 6 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Hays Welcome Center and 6 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall and Catering in Hays.

Monique Koerner of K-State Extension said child care providers can receive a $30 stipend if they submit their children's art to the Ellis County Fair.

The next child care task force meeting will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 30 at the Hays Welcome Center, 2700 Vine.

The Victoria Community Coalition has invited child care providers to a meeting on child care opportunities at St. John's Place. The meeting will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at the Victoria VFW,&nbsp;204 E. Main.
