However, variability is a characteristic of Kansas weather and a drop in temperature with above normal precipitation can create some very stressful conditions for livestock. Animals adapt to colder weather as we go through the fall into winter, but if there is an abrupt change, without acclimation, the stress is compounded.

Many of us are all too aware of the impact wind has on what it takes to keep warm in the winter. Wind speed along with temperature, humidity, and solar radiation have been combined into an animal comfort index that can be used to classify the level of weather-related stress for cattle. 

The K-State Mesonet now provides both current conditions and a 7-day forecast of the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://mesonet.k-state.edu/agriculture/animal/">Animal Comfort Index</a>&nbsp;that producers can use for planning.

During extreme cold, cattle need more energy just to maintain body heat. Windbreaks are a key tool in helping livestock cope with cold stress and reduce the amount of energy, and in effect cost, to maintain weight. 

Some of the best windbreaks are multiple rows of established trees, but they take years to develop and serve a fixed location. 

If building a portable windbreak or a windbreak fence, the most effective for wind protection is 75 to 80% solid to reduce wind speed but prevent snow drifting. An opening of 4 to 6” at the base will promote drying and drainage.Bedding is another tool to help livestock manage cold stress. 

Bedding provides insulation from mud and frozen ground and helps keep cattle clean. Shelter and bedded areas only calves can access will help young calves better cope with the winter weather.

 Bulls can be overlooked during the winter months; however frostbite of the scrotum can cause anywhere from short-term to permanent damage to sperm production. Windbreaks and bedding are great tools to protect your investment in bulls and their genetics.

Drought has impacted forage availability in parts of the state and may make it harder to find sources of bedding. If needed, unrolling large round bales of good quality feed can do double duty as feed and bedding for a short-term solution. 

Feedlot calves that received bedding (4 lbs. per head per day) during a particularly cold January gained 3.33 lbs. per day compared to 2.25 lbs/day for un-bedded calves. For young or already stressed calves, bedding may minimize negative health impacts from the combined stressors.

When cold stress occurs, feeding cattle late in the day can help cattle cope with night-time temperature declines as the heat of fermentation in the rumen will peak about 6 hours after consumption.&nbsp;&nbsp;

BOOR: Cold weather and livestock protection

Asking this question can reduce the risk of cancer for the whole family:

Radon is a radioactive, colorless, and odorless gas that occurs naturally in soil. Outdoors, radon levels are low because they are diluted. However, in our homes, radon levels can build up and increase our risk of developing lung cancer. Radon enters our homes from the soil through cracks in concrete floors and walls, floor drains, sump pits, etc. If the concentration of radon is increased, your family may be at risk.

The Surgeon General warns that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking, and it is the #1 cause of lung cancer in Kansas for nonsmokers. When you breathe in radon, it gets trapped in your lung tissue and gives off radiation that damages cells. Over time, this compound effect can cause lung cancer.

Homes with high radon levels have been found in every state, and radon levels can vary greatly in each home. In fact, your neighbor’s level can be very different from your own home’s level. 

According to the KDHE Kansas radon map, the average radon level is at least 5.1 pCi/ L which leads to 1 in 4 Kansas homes having high radon levels. Barton and Ellis Counties are both in the red with averages of 4.0 pCi/L or more.

The good news is that testing your home for radon is simple and affordable. Short-term radon kits are available in both the Hays and Great Bend extension offices for $9.50 or you can order online at: <a href="https://www.kansasradonprogram.org/RadonKS">https://www.kansasradonprogram.org/RadonKS</a>

FRASIER: January is Kansas Radon Action Month

Yards may need another shot of moisture even after recent rain and snow to alleviate stress in lawns and gardens, said Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini.

“A good, deep watering with moisture reaching at least a foot down into the soil is much better than several light sprinklings that just wet the top portions of the soil,” Domenghini said. “A deep watering will ensure that the majority of roots have access to water.”

Domenghini urged homeowners to test the moisture content in their yard’s soil by pushing a metal rod or wooden dowel into the ground. “Dry soil is much harder to push through than wet,” she said. Measure how far down the implement goes to determine the amount of moisture is in the soil.

“Although all perennial plants benefit from moist soils before winter, it is especially important for newly planted or over-seeded lawns, as well as newly transplanted trees and shrubs due to their limited root systems,” Domenghini said.

“Even trees and shrubs planted within the last 2-3 years are more sensitive to drought than a well-established plant. Evergreens are more at risk because moisture is lost from the foliage.”

Domenghini shared a few tips for watering common areas of the yard:

Trees and shrubs planted within the last year. Drill a small hole in a five-gallon bucket near the bottom, then fill the bucket and let the water dribble out slowly next to the tree. Refill the bucket once so that you apply 10 gallons. Slow release bags with micropores can be purchased as an alternative to using a bucket. Larger trees planted 2-3 years prior may require more water.

Large trees. Using a soaker hose, circle the trunk one-half the distance to the dripline, or the outermost reach of branches. On smaller trees, you may need to circle the tree several times so that tree roots will be watered.

Newly established bed or foundation plantings. Hook the beginning and end of a soaker hose to a Y-adapter to equalize pressure, which encourages more uniform watering.

Fall planted or overseeded lawns. Use an overhead sprinkler. Watering to a depth of 12 inches is more difficult; try to reach at least six inches deep.

BOOR: Watering winter land

•Having hypertension increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, which are leading causes of death in the United States.

•Nearly half of adults in the United States (47%, or 116 million) have hypertension.

•Only about 1 in 4 adults (24%) with hypertension have their condition under control.

*Many people have high blood pressure and don’t know it.

To address hypertension in Kansas, K-State Extension is bringing the Hypertension Awareness and Prevention program (HAPp) to Ellis and Barton counties. 

HAPp is a four-month self-monitoring blood pressure (SMBP) program that will provide participants with:

· A free validated blood pressure monitor.

· An opportunity to meet with a trained HAPp Coach twice a month to help take and track blood pressure.

· Monthly nutrition education workshops.

· Stress management and healthy lifestyle strategies.

There are no requirements to participate. There is strong evidence that suggests that participants who engage in SMBP along with clinical or community support can lower their high blood pressure.

This year we have Dr. Travis Haneke, cardiologist, joining us for the kick-off meeting. He will be a great resource for people wanting to learn more about blood pressure, how it works, and how they can maintain healthy blood pressure.

•Participants are expected to attend the kick-off meeting on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. in either Great Bend (Barton Co. Health Department, 1300 Kansas Ave.) or Hays (Cottonwood Extension Office, 601 Main St., back meeting room).

•Participants are expected to measure their blood pressure at home at least twice per month (February – May).

•Participants are expected to attend office hours to discuss SMBP readings and healthy lifestyle strategies twice per month (February – May). Office hours will be scheduled after the Kick- Off meeting.

•Participants are highly encouraged to attend nutrition education workshops once per month (February-May).

Getting the most out of your fertilizer dollar in these tough economic times with commodity prices as low as they are will be the focus of K-State Extension agents in the region hosting several programs to address this issue, says Stacy Campbell, crop production agent with the Cottonwood Extension District.

A soil fertility with tight crop budgets program will be held at the Barton County 4-H Building, U.S. N. Highway 281 at the intersection of NW 60th Road, Great Bend, on Thursday, January 29, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 9:00 a.m.&nbsp;

This program has been designed to help producers understand how to get the most out of their fertilizer dollar, while making zero to minimal impact on yields.

January 28 – Colby – 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Thomas Co. 4-H Building

January 29 – Kensington – 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. – First St. John Lutheran Church

January 29 – Great Bend – 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Barton Co. 4-H Building

The schools will be presented by Dr. Lucas Haag, agronomist-in-charge at Tribune and Dr. Peter Tomlinson, KSU fertility specialist along with local district extension agents. 

Topics will include KSU research updates, soil sampling, fertilizing with tight budgets, premixes and standard forms, targeted nutrients and a question and answer session. So be sure and bring all your questions with you! 2.5 CCA credits have been applied for.

CAMPBELL: Getting the most out of your fertilizer dollar

I don’t know about your house but the aftermath of the holidays can sure take a toll on my home organization. There are extra boxes and bags, that carton of something at the back of the fridge, and often, just too much stuff!

Karen Blakeslee, K-State food scientist and coordinator of the Rapid Response Center for food science, notes that this can be a great time to tackle cluttered cabinets, crowded refrigerators, and stuffed drawers.

Checking dates is another key step. Spices typically last six months to a year, and canned foods should be rotated so the oldest items are used first. High-acid canned foods, such as tomatoes and fruit, generally keep 12 to 18 months, while low-acid foods like vegetables and soups may last two to five years. Home-canned foods should be used within one year.

Refrigerators and freezers also need regular attention. Blakeslee recommends removing everything, cleaning shelves and drawers by hand and sanitizing surfaces with a mild bleach solution. Labeling and dating freezer items can help prevent forgotten leftovers from lingering too long.

“Things don’t last forever,” Blakeslee said. “But when you organize your kitchen in a way that makes sense, you can save money, reduce food waste and make cooking safer and less frustrating.”

One of my own goals is to go through the kitchen drawers and pantry cabinets to review, pare down, and reorganize. Oh yeah, and I’ll be checking all the labels in the fridge while I’m at it!

Agronomic and economic issues to be addressed at 23rd annual conference

Producers, consultants, and experts will gather for the 23rd annual Cover Your Acres Winter Conference on January 20-21, at the Gateway Civic Center in Oberlin, Kansas. The conference is a joint venture between K-State Research and Extension and conference sponsors.

“Weed management, soil fertility -- and economics, of course -- are always on farmers minds,” said Stacy Campbell, K-State Extension and Cottonwood District, Crop Production Agent. “So, we have (K-State weed management specialist) Sarah Lancaster and (KSU NW Agronomist) Jeanne Falk Jones tackling weed management with a focus on cropping rotations and research on using targeted herbicide applications in Kansas.

Campbell also pointed to sessions on meeting Crop Nutrient needs in lean Economic Times and a discussion on How the Crop Markets have affected Producers, featuring K-State Research and Extension specialists, Dorivar Ruiz-Diaz and Dan O’Brien.

Roger McEowen, nationally-renown Ag Law and Taxation specialist, Washburn University and KS Farm Bureau, will share the Top five Legal Issues Farmers don’t think about, BUT should! Jennifer Ifft, K-State specialist, Ag Policy, addresses Navigating the 2026 Crop Insurance Decisions with SCO and ECO.

Utilizing crop rotations will be the focus of Lucas Haag, K-State Agronomist-In-Charge at Tribune along with Augustine Obour, K-State Soil Scientist at Hays discussing Considerations for Intensifying Crop Rotations and Incorporating Forages into Dryland Rotations.

The same programs will be offered both days of the conference. Wick said participants attending both days will find it easier to catch most or all of the programs. The program offers continuing education credits for Certified Crop Advisors and CEU’s for Commercial Applicators.

Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. with educational sessions ending at 5 p.m.

Early registration is due by Wednesday, Jan. 14. The fee is $60 for Tuesday, $55 for Wednesday, or $80 for both days. After Jan. 14, the cost is $80 for each day. The&nbsp;conference fee includes lunch, morning and afternoon refreshments, and educational materials.

Ever since Democratic Sen. George McGill left his seat in January of 1939, Kansas Republicans have enjoyed&nbsp;<a href="https://www.senate.gov/states/KS/senators.htm" target="_blank">an 86-year run</a>&nbsp;in the upper chamber of Congress.

Ahead of the 2026 elections, five Democratic candidates&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fec.gov/data/elections/senate/KS/2026/" target="_blank">have filed</a>&nbsp;to challenge first-term Republican Sen. Roger Marshall.

But Democrats hope enough&nbsp;<a href="https://www.npr.org/2025/12/17/nx-s1-5645003/trump-poll-economy-approval" target="_blank">popular dissatisfaction</a>&nbsp;with the current presidential administration might damage Republicans’ electoral chances in Congress.

Primary elections are on Aug. 4, 2026. Voters will decide the next governor of Kansas — as well as a U.S. senator, state attorney general, state insurance commissioner, secretary of state and state treasurer — on Nov. 3, 2026.

Who's running to represent Kansas in the U.S. Senate in 2026? Here's a guide to the candidates

With Kansas farmers facing rising financial pressures, Kansas State University is hosting a series of Agricultural Profitability Conferences across the state, beginning in December and continuing through early February.

The Cottonwood Extension District along with several other districts is hosting one of these conferences in Hays at the Agricultural Research Center, 1232 240th Avenue on Thursday, January 15th, says Stacy Campbell, Agricultural Agent for the Cottonwood District. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and the conference concludes at 3:00 p.m.

The conferences, Making ‘Cents’ of a Shifting Ag Economy, are organized by K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics, offering insights into economic trends, farm policy, land values and strategies to maintain profitability during difficult times.

"The goal of this is to help crop producers deal with the struggling economy,” said department head Allen Featherstone. “In 2021, only 4.4% of Kansas farmers had a negative net farm income. But in 2024, that number jumped to 28.5%. Many producers are feeling the strain.”

The conferences will focus on preparing farmers to navigate economic downturns, manage input costs, and take advantage of new opportunities.

“We want to help producers think through what they can do now to position themselves for when profitability improves,” Featherstone said.

K-State farm economist Robin Reid, one of the conference presenters, said this year’s topics include updates on agricultural policy, farm bill changes, and land values. Reid will be joined by Jenny Ifft, Extension Agricultural Policy specialist, to discuss provisions in the recently passed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”

“A lot of the elements we typically think of in a farm bill were in that act — enhancements to crop insurance, Agricultural Risk Coverage, Price Loss Coverage, and more,” Reid said. “While the changes are smaller in scope than past farm bills, they will be very beneficial to farmers.”

Reid added that the conferences will also discuss stress and mental health, as well as farm succession and retirement planning.

 </figure>By STACY CAMPBELL Cottonwood Extension DistrictWith Kansas farmers facing rising financial pressures, Kansas State University is hosting a series of Agricultural Profitability Conferences across the state, beginning in December and continuing through early February.The Cottonwood Extension District along with several other districts is hosting one of these conferences in Hays at the Agricultural Research Center, 1232 240th Avenue on Thursday, January 15th, says Stacy Campbell, Agricultural Agent for the Cottonwood District. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and the conference concludes at 3:00 p.m.The conferences, Making ‘Cents’ of a Shifting Ag Economy, are organized by K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics, offering insights into economic trends, farm policy, land values and strategies to maintain profitability during difficult times."The goal of this is to help crop producers deal with the struggling economy,” said department head Allen Featherstone. “In 2021, only 4.4% of Kansas farmers had a negative net farm income. But in 2024, that number jumped to 28.5%. Many producers are feeling the strain.”The conferences will focus on preparing farmers to navigate economic downturns, manage input costs, and take advantage of new opportunities.“We want to help producers think through what they can do now to position themselves for when profitability improves,” Featherstone said.K-State farm economist Robin Reid, one of the conference presenters, said this year’s topics include updates on agricultural policy, farm bill changes, and land values. CAMPBELL: Making ‘cents’ of a shifting ag economy – Jan. 15 in Hays

Staying active when the weather turns cold and windy can be tough! There are several strategies that can help us stay active and healthy throughout the winter months.

According to Family and Consumer Sciences specialist, Sharolyn Jackson, the physical activity guidelines for adults are 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity activity or about 30 minutes five days of the week.

This can include a 10- to 15-minute brisk walk outdoors. Be sure that you are dressed appropriately in layers with a hat and gloves in addition to good walking shoes and a weather-appropriate coat.

Jackson also notes that kids love to be out in the snow and adults can join in for some fun activity. In addition, raking leaves or shoveling snow can definitely provide good exercise. Just be sure that you active without overdoing it! Muscles will be tired and a little achy after good exercise but you don’t want to work to the point of injury.

You can also get a good walk around your house or by using the bottom step of stairs to step up and down. I keep a walking pad in my office and try to use it when I will be listening in on a call or workshop.

Jackson has good ideas for indoor activity also.

“The three things you should focus on are strength, flexibility and balance,” she said. “Strengthening and stretching exercises can be pretty simple, either with specialized equipment or using body weight. You can also do arm curls with cans of vegetables while watching TV, or buy resistance bands and follow the diagrams that come with the packaging.”

Small jumps, or hops, around the home help to build bone strength. Simple hops may feel silly for adults to do, but you can be creative to do what works for you.

“For balance, simple things can help,” Jackson said. “When brushing your teeth or washing the dishes, stand on one foot. That builds strength and balance.”

She also suggested a wide-leg squat, standing up and sitting down, while watching TV or talking with family.

BERAN: Staying active when weather turns cold

Well over half of the farmland in Kansas is leased. Therefore, there are lots of different lease arrangements, factors to consider and places where misunderstandings can happen. Additionally, many leases are still oral leases that are “signed” with a handshake.

One of the best ways to create a better understanding between tenant and landlord in most cases is to have a written lease. Having a written lease can lead to many topics for discussion that otherwise might not be considered. 

These, would include but are not limited to:

Hunting/fishing rights Recreation access Payment due dates Termination procedures

In addition to the previously mentioned items, a written pasture lease for example can spell out responsibilities of both parties in regards to:

Care of fences Noxious weed control Water supply maintenance Grazing capacity restrictions and beginning and ending date of grazing season

A bonus of a written lease is that it documents the terms of the business relationship in case the contract is questioned. This can be especially important if the land changes hands.

Obviously, it is not necessary to have a written lease in order to have good communication between tenant and landlord but it can be helpful in spelling things out and avoiding misunderstandings and hard feelings. There may be some cases when introducing the possibility of implementing a written lease might damage the business relationship. 

Whether you have a written lease or not, make sure thoselines of communication are kept open, visit with each other at least a few times a year.

Local county and district extension offices have several resources concerning leases, written leasing arrangement forms, cash rental rate averages, Kansas Agricultural Lease Law publication C-668, etc.

Farmland leasing program meeting set for Jan. 8

As the holiday season winds down, many households face the question: what to do with the Christmas tree and holiday greenery? Instead of sending them to the landfill, consider recycling them! Repurposing your tree and greenery is an eco-friendly way to give them a second life while benefiting your garden, wildlife, or community.

Here are some practical and creative ways to recycle your Christmas tree and greenery:

1. Turn It in to Mulch Most natural Christmas trees can be chipped into mulch, which is excellent for garden beds and pathways. If you have access to a chipper, you can do this yourself. Otherwise, check with your local recycling center or municipal services—many communities offer free tree chipping programs.

2. Create Habitat for Wildlife Place your tree in your yard or garden to create shelter for birds and small animals during the winter months. You can even decorate it with birdseed ornaments, suet, or peanut butter-coated pinecones to provide food for wildlife.

3. Compost the Greenery Cut branches and greenery can be added to your compost pile or used as a base layer. The needles are rich in carbon and can help balance the compost's nitrogen content. Keep in mind that large branches should be trimmed down for easier decomposition.

4. Protect Your Plants Lay trimmed branches over perennial beds to help insulate them during the cold months. The branches can act as a natural mulch, protecting plants from harsh winter temperatures.

5. Check Local Recycling Programs Many communities have specific programs for tree and greenery recycling. Some cities collect trees curbside for recycling into mulch or erosion control products. Contact your local solid waste department or extension office for details.

6. Use It for Erosion Control In some areas, recycled Christmas trees are used for erosion control in wetlands or along riverbanks. These trees help stabilize soil and provide a natural barrier against erosion.

Avoid These Mistakes · Don’t Burn It Indoors: Dry trees are highly flammable and can create a fire hazard. They also produce creosote, which can build up in your chimney.

· Remove All Decorations: Before recycling, ensure all ornaments, tinsel, and lights are removed to prevent contamination.

· Avoid Artificial Trees: Artificial trees cannot be recycled and should be reused or donated if in good condition.

Why is that you ask? Simply put, land is expensive and to purchase most or all of the land an agricultural producer would need is cost prohibitive. Therefore, many producers lease agricultural land from typically a number of landowners or landlords.

Each year we get a number of questions from landowners and tenants on agricultural land leasing—from average cash rental rates to written lease forms, etc.

 </figure>By&nbsp;TAMARA ROBERTSON Cottonwood Extension DistrictWritten by Lizzy Vajnar, Ellis County 4-H Member4-H offers youth the opportunity to explore a wide range of project areas while developing responsibility, leadership, and essential life skills. From livestock and animal care to science-based projects, each experience helps members grow both personally and professionally. While the community gets to view exhibits at the Ellis County Fair, these projects represent a year-long commitment for 4-H members. Several Ellis County 4-H members shared how their projects have shaped their journeys and influenced their lives and future goals.For Keeli Kimzey, the horse project is more than just riding; it’s about teamwork, patience, and accomplishment. “My favorite part about working with my horses is the feeling of accomplishment when we do something well,” Kimzey said. “By staying calm and working through problems, we’re learning together at the same time.” One of Kimzeys’ most memorable experiences came after her first Kansas State Fair Horse Show. “My family and I were leaving Hutchinson when my mom got a call saying I had won Grand Champion Intermediate Horse Showman,” she said. “We had to turn around and go back so I could receive my buckle.” Through the horse project, Kimzey has learned patience and perseverance—skills that continue to benefit her both inside and outside the arena.Inside the building during the Ellis County Fair, Lizzy Vajnar enjoys showcasing her photography and educational displays. “I really have enjoyed having entries in the photography project for the past 10 years and assisting with educational displays at the fair. Watching my photography skills grow throughout the years has been truly unique.” Her dedication has earned her numerous Grand and Reserve Champion awards in both 4-H and open photography exhibits. “I believe these skills have improved my ability to photograph wildlife, take portraits of friends and family, and produce quality images for school journalism publications or other organizations. My educational displays help share the variety of projects and experiences I have learned from, as well as promote the 4-H program as a whole.”Participating in shooting sports teaches many skills from the range to the meeting room. Alex Rohr, President of the Shooting Sports 4-H Club, enjoys the friendships and quality time the group shares during practices, meetings, and competitions. With effort and practice from the entire team, the Ellis County 4-H Shooting Sports team achieved First Place Overall Team at the Kansas 4-H State Shotgun Competition, with several team members earning top individual finishes in both Senior and Junior divisions. “One of the most rewarding aspects of the project is seeing personal growth through practice for competitions,” Rohr said. “I’ve learned how to get better at talking in front of a gathering of people, especially at our meetings. Shooting Sports has also taught me to keep a program organized and running efficiently.”Together, these experiences reflect the wide impact of 4-H projects on youth across Ellis County. Whether in the arena, behind the camera, or on the shooting range,members are gaining skills that extend far beyond their project areas. 4-H helps to build confidence, leadership, and a strong sense of responsibility that will serve all members well into the future. These stories highlight just a few of the many ways 4-H members grow through hands-on learning and dedication.
