MORRIS COUNTY— The Kansas Highway Patrol has released the names of three people who died in an accident just before 4p.m. Saturday in Morris County.

According to the patrol, a 2014 Ram 1500 pickup driven by Andrew M. Steele, 53, White City, was southbound on Kelso Road at&nbsp;P Avenue approximately 6 miles Northwest of Council Grove.

The pickup&nbsp;was traveling in the center of the road and struck a northbound 2024 Toyota Rav4 driven by&nbsp; Troy A. Sabean, 33, Roseville, Minnesota, head-on.

&nbsp;Sabean and passengers in the Toyota identified as Ann C. Porter, 69, Fergus Falls, Minnesota and Emma M. Porter, 33, Roseville, Minnesota, were pronounced dead at the scene.

EMS transported passengers in the Toyota Paul M. Porter, 68, and Kathleen L. Lebarron, 64, both of Edina, Minnesota to Stormont Vail.&nbsp;

EMS transported Steele to the Morris County Hospital and a passenger in the pickup Lisa M.&nbsp;Steele, 51, White City, to KU Medical Center. Andrew Steele was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

KHP IDs 3 who died and 4 injured after head-on crash

The youngest graduate of this year's Hays High School class finds hard work comes naturally as she advances toward completing college ahead of schedule.

Sixteen-year-old Sophia Ballenger started reading at age 3 and maintained straight A's throughout her K-12 school career.

Sophia said she got ahead of the curve in her first year of high school after attending Goddard Academy and excelling as a gifted student.

"I completed 12 credits instead of the typical seven my freshman year," she said. "That set me on track to graduating early."

In ninth grade, Sophia completed two English grade levels in one semester and began her college journey by her sophomore year at age 15.

With permission from the school board, Sophia skipped her junior year and advanced directly to senior status in the fall semester of 2023.

"I've always been the youngest person in my class," Sophia said.

Sophia's rapid school completion allowed her to concentrate on her future as she prepares to pursue an art education degree at Fort Hays State University.

As a new tiger this fall semester, Sophia plans to take as many credits as possible and utilize multiple grants, which her mom said were essential.

"The scholarships are amazing," Shannon Ballenger said. "I don't know if I could have sent her to college without the scholarship she got, so we are extremely thankful for that."

Although FHSU is a four-year school, Sophia aims to stay ahead of the curve and graduate by 2027, having already completed a third of her first college year.

As the youngest graduate in <a href="https://graduation.eagleradio.net/schools/hays-high">Hays High's class of 2024</a>, she never felt excluded from her classmates during graduation proceedings.

"They treated me like every other student who was graduating, which I appreciated," she said.

Alongside her high school diploma, Sophia was honored with the Outstanding Academic Achievement award and Summa Cum Laude, boasting a 3.95 GPA.

Despite the hard work Sophia has dedicated in her teenage years, Shannon said it had not stopped her from enjoying the luxuries of being young.

Sophia participated in various extracurricular activities, including the art club, knitting club and the Hays High production of "Sweeney Todd."

"She got to flex out some of her senior classes. She had more teenage time when she didn't have to go to classes because she was so far ahead," Shannon said.

Sophia acknowledges the support she has received from Hays High's gifted teacher Jerry Braun; art teacher Grace Splichal; counselor Alyssa Chappell and other faculty.

"I was motivated by getting my schooling done early so I could start on my college education and get that higher level of learning," she said.

Hays 16 year old graduates high school; first college year almost complete

BUTLER, Mo. (AP) — Six skydivers and a pilot on board a small plane parachuted to safety before it crashed near a county airport in western Missouri, leaving the plane “a total loss,” officials said.

Preliminary information indicates the plane that crashed early Saturday afternoon was flying a skydiving mission, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

The wreckage was found in a field east of the runways at Butler Memorial Airport, the Bates County Sheriff's Office said on social media. The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane was a single-engine Cessna.

Bates County Sheriff Chad Anderson said in an email that all passengers parachuted to safety before the pilot did the same.

All were treated and released at the scene, according to the social media post.

The crash happened near the airport about 62 miles south of Kansas City. Wreckage will be recovered and examined by the NTSB as part of its investigation.

First responders found the&nbsp;single-engine Cessna C206 in a hay field east of the airport runways, according to the Bates County, Missouri Sheriff.

The pilot had been able to parachute from the plane prior to the crash and was located at a hanger at the airport. EMS treated everyone involved at the scene and released them, according to the sheriff's office.

The plane is a total loss. The Bates County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the NTSB and the FAA in their investigations.&nbsp; Authorities released no additional details including the name of the pilot.

Plane crash near Kansas City was flying a skydiving mission

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) —The local director of a mission group in Haiti and a young missionary couple from the U.S. were&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/haiti-us-couple-missionaries-killed-gangs-a65a4515e0d8610d9acd006d24821efd">attacked and fatally shot by gang members</a>&nbsp;after leaving a youth group activity at a church, a family member told The Associated Press.

Thursday’s killings of Jude Montis, the local director of Missions in Haiti Inc., and Davy and Natalie Lloyd happened in the community of Lizon in northern&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/port-au-prince">Port-au-Prince</a>. Natalie Lloyd is the daughter of a Republican state representative in Missouri.

Haiti's capital has been crumbling under the relentless assault of violent gangs that control 80% of the city, while authorities await the arrival of a police force from Kenya as part of a U.N.-backed deployment aimed at quelling gang violence in the troubled Caribbean country.

Here are some things to know about the missionary work, which focused on helping the children of Haiti, and the gang attack that took three lives.

Missions in Haiti’s website says its goal is “to see the Gospel of Christ make a difference in the lives of Haiti’s young people.”

Davy Lloyd's parents, David and Alicia Lloyd, of Oklahoma, started the organization in 2000 with the aim of focusing on the children of Haiti. David and Alicia Lloyd are full-time missionaries in the country.

“Although the entire nation is steeped in poverty, the children suffer the worst,” they wrote on the website. “Thousands are malnourished, uneducated, and headed for hopeless lives apart from Christ.”

Hannah Cornett, Davy’s sister, told AP that they grew up in Haiti. Davy went to the U.S. to attend a Bible college and married Natalie in June 2022. After the wedding, the couple wasted little time moving to Haiti to do humanitarian work.

Cornett said Montis, a Haitian, worked at Missions in Haiti for 20 years.

The organization's efforts include House of Compassion, which provides housing for 36 children — 18 boys and 18 girls, the website says. “All are destined to stay at House of Compassion until they have finished school and are ready to be on their own.”

Good Hope Boys’ Home provides a home for 22 boys, according to the website. The organization also built a church, a bakery and a school with more than 240 students.

A Facebook posting on the Missions in Haiti page stated that Davy Lloyd, 23, and Natalie Lloyd, 21, along with some children, were leaving a church when gang members in three trucks ambushed them.

Davy Lloyd later called his family to tell them that gang members hit him on the head with the barrel of a gun, forced him upstairs, stole their belongings and left him tied up, Cornett said.

As people were helping untie Davy Lloyd, another group of armed gunmen showed up, Cornett said.

“No one understood what they were doing, not sure what took place but one was shot and killed and now this gang went into full attack mode,” Missions in Haiti's posting said.

The couple and Montis fled to a house connected to the mission.

“They tried to take cover in there, but the gang shot up the house,” Cornett said.

Ben Baker, Natalie Lloyd's father and a state representative in Missouri, said Friday on Facebook that the couple's bodies were safely transported to the U.S. Embassy.

Cassidy Anderson, a spokesperson for the family, said in a later Facebook post on Baker's page that they were working to retrieve the bodies.

“We have to obtain a waiver that will allow their bodies to be transported without being fully embalmed due to the lack of facilities that provide that service in Haiti,” the post said. "After that, we have to find an airline that will be willing to do the transport. Prayers that this will all go smoothly.”

Cornett said Montis left behind two children, ages 2 and 6.

Montis’ family could not be reached for comment Friday, and Missions in Haiti did not respond to an AP request for comment.

Missions in Haiti said in a Facebook post Saturday that they were “facing the most difficult time of our life.”

“The embassy is working on getting all the paper work done in order for them to be flown to the states and many more behind the scenes to make happen more quickly and safely,” the post said, adding that the children and staff of Missions in Haiti have been relocated to a safer location.

Baker wrote on Facebook that his heart was broken “in a thousand pieces.”

“I’ve never felt this kind of pain,” he said. “Most of you know my daughter and son-in-law Davy and Natalie Lloyd are full time missionaries in Haiti. They were attacked by gangs this evening and were both killed. They went to Heaven together. Please pray for my family we desperately need strength. And please pray for the Lloyd family as well. I have no other words for now.”

Family working to retrieve bodies of missionary couple killed in Haiti

It might have been surprising if Kahne Johnson had not chosen sprint car racing as his career path.

Kahne, a 2024 graduate of Quinter Junior-Senior High, is on track to make his dreams come true.

From a racing family devoted to dirt tracks on warm summer evenings, Kahne moved to Missouri this past Thursday. He began his full-time job as crew chief for Ayrton Gennetten Racing, which runs a sprint car in the World of Outlaws circuit.

“My dream always was to get a sprint car, but I fell in love with working on them,” Kahne said.

Kahne, 18, is part of a third generation of racing. He raced go-karts, as did his older brother, 20-year-old Kyler, who graduated to driving sprint cars on weekends.

His younger sister, Kendyl, 15, also used to race go-karts. His father, CJ Johnson, retired in 2015 after a long career racing sprint cars. His paternal grandfather, Jon Johnson, raced sprint cars, as did Dennis Park, stepfather of Kahne’s mom, Kayla.

The family loved the track so much that a little thing like the birth of a child wouldn’t wave the red flag. All three Johnson siblings were born in the middle of the week, and days after their birth, they were at the track that weekend. CJ won a race the weekend after each child’s birth, and after Kyler was born, CJ won 11 straight races. Other drivers jokingly pleaded with CJ that he not have any more kids.

“We’ve never been the kind of family that stays home or goes to the lake on weekends,” Johnson said. “All we’ve ever known was racing.”

Kahne moves from one family to another. Ayrton Gennetten said the racing community is close-knit.

“Racing is basically a second family to anyone involved in the sport,” Gennetten said. “You grow fond of the people you’re around.”

From the it’s-a-small-world department, Gennetten’s grandfather raced against Kahne’s grandfather, and their dads also raced against each other a few times. Gennetten also has raced against Kahne’s older brother a few times. Now, Kahne is Gennetten's crew chief.

“It’s kind of cool we get to work together,” Gennetten said.

Kahne’s grandfather raced against his mom’s stepfather, and both dads raced each other. And, Kahne’s mom met his dad at the track. Years later, decades later, they’re still at the track.

“She kind of knew what she was getting into,” Kahne said.

Kahne had no idea what was going to happen after a chance meeting with Gennetten at a race weekend a couple of years ago. They were parked together and started talking racing. Talking turned into texts, but a summer job did not work out.

However, another racer, Brian Brown, offered a summer job a year later, and Kahne worked with him last season. Kahne credited his crew chief, Chad Morgan, for showing him the ropes in the pit.

“He explained things really well,” Kahne said. “He’s definitely a mentor because he knew what he was doing.”

Over the winter, Gennetten offered Kahne a full-time position as crew chief with his racing team. So Kahne packed up and moved to Warrensburg, Mo., with the shop in nearby Knob Noster. He was helping get the car ready to race this weekend and from now until November, with race weekends scheduled in nine states.

“I’m probably one of the younger (crew chiefs) who gets this much say, what we’re doing on the car,” Kahne said. “Eighteen is kind of pretty early. I’m very blessed to have this opportunity.”

Gennetten, 24, said while it was rare to have a crew chief that young, he was confident Kahne could do the job.

“I think we will make a good combination,” Gennetten said. “I trust that he will do it right because he wants to have a career in this. Hopefully, we can build a good program and grow together.”

Typically, the season goes from March to the end of October, but graduation delayed Kahne’s involvement this year. Gennetten races on two different circuits.

“He’s not really committed to one or the other,” Kahne said. “He picks and chooses which one he wants to go to on that particular weekend.”

Kahne once wanted to be a sprint car driver like his brother, but working on cars was a better fit than driving them—literally. At 6 feet 3 inches, Johnson found the sprint car cockpit too confining.

“It’s not a real comfortable car if you’re tall,” Kahne said.

Johnson feels comfortable tinkering with cars, getting them to perform their best every weekend.

“The main goal is to work full-time World of Outlaws,” Kahne said. “That is the best of the best, coast-to-coast. Just be successful, win a bunch of races as a crew chief.”

The roar of the track, with cars racing for the checkered flag, is part of the allure.

“It’s exciting for me to just hear the sprint cars go on the track. They’re plenty loud,” Kahne said.

Now, at a young age, Kahne is making noise as a crew chief for a racing team. He remembers his reaction when he received the job offer.

 </figure>By RANDY GONZALES Special to Hays PostIt might have been surprising if Kahne Johnson had not chosen sprint car racing as his career path.Kahne, a 2024 graduate of Quinter Junior-Senior High, is on track to make his dreams come true.From a racing family devoted to dirt tracks on warm summer evenings, Kahne moved to Missouri this past Thursday. He began his full-time job as crew chief for Ayrton Gennetten Racing, which runs a sprint car in the World of Outlaws circuit.“My dream always was to get a sprint car, but I fell in love with working on them,” Kahne said.Kahne, 18, is part of a third generation of racing. He raced go-karts, as did his older brother, 20-year-old Kyler, who graduated to driving sprint cars on weekends.His younger sister, Kendyl, 15, also used to race go-karts. His father, CJ Johnson, retired in 2015 after a long career racing sprint cars. His paternal grandfather, Jon Johnson, raced sprint cars, as did Dennis Park, stepfather of Kahne’s mom, Kayla.<figure>

 </figure>The family loved the track so much that a little thing like the birth of a child wouldn’t wave the red flag. All three Johnson siblings were born in the middle of the week, and days after their birth, they were at the track that weekend. CJ won a race the weekend after each child’s birth, and after Kyler was born, CJ won 11 straight races. Other drivers jokingly pleaded with CJ that he not have any more kids.“We’ve never been the kind of family that stays home or goes to the lake on weekends,” Johnson said. “All we’ve ever known was racing.”Kahne moves from one family to another. Ayrton Gennetten said the racing community is close-knit.“Racing is basically a second family to anyone involved in the sport,” Gennetten said. “You grow fond of the people you’re around.”<figure>

 </figure>From the it’s-a-small-world department, Gennetten’s grandfather raced against Kahne’s grandfather, and their dads also raced against each other a few times. Gennetten also has raced against Kahne’s older brother a few times. Now, Kahne is Gennetten's crew chief.“It’s kind of cool we get to work together,” Gennetten said.Kahne’s grandfather raced against his mom’s stepfather, and both dads raced each other. And, Kahne’s mom met his dad at the track. Years later, decades later, they’re still at the track.“She kind of knew what she was getting into,” Kahne said.Kahne had no idea what was going to happen after a chance meeting with Gennetten at a race weekend a couple of years ago. They were parked together and started talking racing. Talking turned into texts, but a summer job did not work out.However, another racer, Brian Brown, offered a summer job a year later, and Kahne worked with him last season. Kahne credited his crew chief, Chad Morgan, for showing him the ropes in the pit.<figure>

 </figure>“He explained things really well,” Kahne said. “He’s definitely a mentor because he knew what he was doing.”Over the winter, Gennetten offered Kahne a full-time position as crew chief with his racing team. So Kahne packed up and moved to Warrensburg, Mo., with the shop in nearby Knob Noster. He was helping get the car ready to race this weekend and from now until November, with race weekends scheduled in nine states.“I’m probably one of the younger (crew chiefs) who gets this much say, what we’re doing on the car,” Kahne said. “Eighteen is kind of pretty early. I’m very blessed to have this opportunity.”Gennetten, 24, said while it was rare to have a crew chief that young, he was confident Kahne could do the job.“I think we will make a good combination,” Gennetten said. “I trust that he will do it right because he wants to have a career in this. Hopefully, we can build a good program and grow together.”Typically, the season goes from March to the end of October, but graduation delayed Kahne’s involvement this year. Gennetten races on two different circuits.“He’s not really committed to one or the other,” Kahne said. “He picks and chooses which one he wants to go to on that particular weekend.”<figure>

 </figure>Kahne once wanted to be a sprint car driver like his brother, but working on cars was a better fit than driving them—literally. At 6 feet 3 inches, Johnson found the sprint car cockpit too confining.“It’s not a real comfortable car if you’re tall,” Kahne said.Johnson feels comfortable tinkering with cars, getting them to perform their best every weekend.“The main goal is to work full-time World of Outlaws,” Kahne said. “That is the best of the best, coast-to-coast. Just be successful, win a bunch of races as a crew chief.”The roar of the track, with cars racing for the checkered flag, is part of the allure.<figure>

NWester: Quinter teenager races to top as crew chief

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — The bodies of three more hostages killed on Oct 7. were recovered overnight from Gaza, Israel's army said Friday, as the top United Nations court&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-gaza-palestinians-court-ceasefire-01d093d21a1eadaa31af5708cf1cbf38">prepares to rule</a>&nbsp;on whether Israel must halt its military operations and withdraw from the enclave.

The bodies of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hamas-israel-unaccounted-people-095f64d06108416ff9c58ea7550b9a74">Hanan Yablonka</a>, Michel Nisenbaum, and Orion Hernandez Radoux were found and their families have been notified. The army said they were killed on the day of the attack at the Mefalsim intersection and their bodies were taken to Gaza.

The announcement comes less than a week after the army said it found&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-hamas-war-gaza-hostages-shani-louk-a37e4fd656b46be36c4c659a9c2aac7d">the bodies of three other Israeli hostages</a>&nbsp;killed on Oct. 7.

Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people, mainly civilians, and abducted around 250 others in the Oct. 7 attack. Around half of those hostages&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-hamas-war-news-11-25-2023-7d83895eb736c09fab3eada4c31524b0">have since been freed</a>, most in swaps for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel during a weeklong cease-fire in November.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to both eliminate Hamas and bring all the hostages back, but he’s made little progress. He faces pressure to resign, and the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-weapons-shipment-us-eed365ebef0477ba74bf9848cacae4f4">U.S. has threatened to scale back</a>&nbsp;its support over the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

On Friday Netanyahu said the country had a duty to do everything to return those abducted, both those killed and those who are alive.

Israel says around 100 hostages are still captive in Gaza, along with the bodies of at least 39 more, while 17 bodies of hostages have been recovered.

In a post on X Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron gave condolences to the family of Hernández-Radoux, a French-Mexican citizen, saying France remains committed to releasing the hostages.

The country is also expecting a ruling Friday afternoon by the International Court of Justice to decide on an urgent plea by South Africa to order Israel to cease operations. Israel is unlikely to comply with any such order. Even so, a cease-fire order by judges of the International Court of Justice would heap more pressure on an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/norway-palestinian-state-ddfd774a23d39f77f5977b9c89c43dbc">increasingly isolated Israel</a>.

On the hostages, Israelis are divided into two main camps: those who want the government to put the war on hold and free the hostages, and others who think the hostages are an unfortunate price to pay for eradicating Hamas. On-and-off negotiations mediated by Qatar, the United States and Egypt have yielded little.

Anger is growing at home at the government’s handling of the hostage crisis.

Earlier this week a group representing the families of hostages&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-gaza-hostages-dcb39658d1afcd00341d2c1cd54c38b0">released new video footage</a>&nbsp;showing Hamas’ capture of five female Israeli soldiers near the Gaza border on Oct. 7.

The video shows several of the young soldiers bloody and wounded. In one scene, a militant tells one of the terrified women she is beautiful.

The video sparked more protests across the country calling for the hostages’ release.

The army said on Friday the hostages were found during an operation in Jabaliya. Military spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said in a news conference that the army was able to retrieve the bodies based on “critical intelligence” uncovered last week by Israeli forces operating in Gaza.

The group representing the families of the hostages said the bodies had been returned to their families for burial.

Nisenbaum, 59, was a Brazilian-Israeli from the southern city of Sderot. He was taken hostage when he went to rescue his 4-year-old granddaughter.

Oryon Hernandez Radoux, 30, was taken from the Nova music festival, which he attended with his partner Shani Louk. Louk's body was one of those found by the army nearly a week ago.

Yablonka, 42, a father of two, was also taken from the music festival. His family in December told the AP that he loved music. Yablonka’s family had no news of him for nearly two months after he’d been taken, not knowing if he was alive or dead.

Israel’s offensive since the war began has killed more than 35,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, and has caused a humanitarian crisis and a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gaza-famine-world-food-program-israel-hamas-war-476941bf2dc259f85a706408b2a665ff">near-famine.</a>

While it has weakened Hamas' capabilities, after nearly eight months of war, militants are regrouping in some of the hardest-hit areas in northern Gaza and resuming rocket attacks into nearby Israeli communities. Israel says its troops are operating in Rafah in the south, in central Gaza and in Jabaliya in the north.

EMPORIA - Former Hays High standout Jordan Dale picked up his third All-American award and his second outdoor honor in as many seasons finishing in a tie for seventh in the high jump at the NCAA Division II National Championships at Welch Stadium Saturday. 

The Washburn sophomore cleared 2.03m (6-08.00) on his second attempt and then cleared 2.08m (6-09.75) on his second attempt before going out at 2.13m (6-11.75).

2024 Sunflower Summer Program to run May 25-Aug.11; free activities for kids

EMPORIA, Kan. - Four student-athletes from the Fort Hays State men's and women's track and field teams competed on day one of the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships Thursday (May 23), with one earning second-team All-America honors and two advancing to the finals in track events.

Making his debut at the national meet, freshman Keomonia Archie&nbsp;garnered second-team All-America status by finishing 11th in the long jump with a top leap of 24-2.5. The Hays native opened the day with a foul before posting a distance of 24-1.75 on his second attempt. Archie saved the best for last, adding two centimeters to his official mark to move up one spot in the standings.

Grant Bailey&nbsp;secured a spot in tomorrow's 3,000m steeplechase finals with a fourth-place finish in his preliminary heat, posting a time of 9:05.28. Bradley sat in the sixth position with two laps to go before moving into fifth by the start of the bell lap and finally overtaking fourth with just over 200 meters to go. He finished off the race with his fastest lap of the evening, clocking 1:05.86 over the final 400 meters. The Aurora, Colo. native finished eighth overall in the prelims and is one of 12 that will run in the finals Friday evening.

Taylor Savolt&nbsp;will run in the finals of the 400m hurdles for a second-consecutive season after finishing fifth overall and second in her heat with a lifetime-best time of 59.15. Savolt finished eighth at the 2023 Outdoor Championships, earning her first All-American trophy.Earlier in the day Savolt completed the first four events of the heptathlon, sitting in 15th with a day-one total of 3,012 points. Her top event of the day was the 200m dash, where she finished seventh with a time of 25.18 to accumulate 870 points.

TOPEKA —The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to see more drivers traveling well above the posted speed limit.

This week, Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Tod Heilman shared on social media an account of someone driving 102mph in a construction zone.

Heilman wrote, "In 2022, 891 people were killed and 37,701 people were injured in work zone crashes.

Driving 102 mph through them greatly increases the risk of a crash…not to mention a very hefty fine since we have to double it." In this instance the driver was responsible for $858.00 in fines and court costs, according to the ticket.

Last month, the KHP reported checking a driver's speed at 135 mph on a Kansas Highway. The 18-year-old driver crashed and went to jail.

In February, KHP Lieutenant Craig Davis had an encounter with a BMW on Interstate 70, checking its speed at 151 mph, 76 mph over the speed limit, according to a social media report from the KHP.

Also in February, the patrol reported two traffic stops for 100-plus miles per hour within 6 miles in the same afternoon, and both vehicles had children in the car, according to a social media report.

LT. Littrell stopped the first vehicle for 103mph on Interstate 35 in Osage County. This vehicle had a properly restrained infant in the vehicle. Just six miles down the road the next vehicle was stopped for 101mph and had an unrestrained child, according to the KHP.

Days earlier, Troopers stopped a motorist on Kansas Highway 10 for 112mph during evening rush hour traffic.&nbsp;

A week earlier, a Trooper on I-70&nbsp; noticed a vehicle racing up behind him. Swiftly exiting, he let the speedster pass, only to re-enter and apprehend them for cruising at 106 in a 75 zone. Not only that, but the driver was also tailgating and failing to stay in the right lane on a 4-lane highway.

On February 5, in heavy fog on Interstate 135 in Saline County, a Trooper stopped a motorist driving 116 mph, according to Trooper Ben Gardner. That driver was given a $468.00 fine, according to the ticket.

"It’s more than just speed. Speeding is dangerous, especially speeds like this."

KHP: Driver was traveling 102mph in construction zone

JACKSON COUNTY —A Kansas woman died in an accident just before 9p.m. Thursday in Jackson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Kia Optima driven by&nbsp; Crystal D.&nbsp;Poynter, 36, Topeka, was northbound on U.S. 75 two miles north of Holton.

The car struck a deer in the roadway. A southbound 2014 Toyota Highlander driven by Nathan M.&nbsp;Monhollon, 34, Holton then struck the deer. After impact, the Toyota stopped on the shoulder out of the roadway.

EMS transported Nathan Monhollon and passengers in the Toyota identified as Jennifer D.&nbsp;Monhollon, 39 and&nbsp;Katelyn R. Monholon, 21, both of Holton to the Holton Community Hospital.&nbsp; &nbsp;Jennifer&nbsp;Monhollon died of her injuries.

Poynter and a passenger in the KIA were not injured. All five were properly restrained, according to the KHP.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Quentin Lindahl Griffith, age 69, of Elkhart, Kansas, died Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas. He was born September 26, 1954, in Elkhart, the son of C. Lyndon and Irene Gladys (Lindahl) Griffith.

Quentin grew up in Elkhart and graduated from Elkhart High School in 1973. While in high school, he belonged to the Spanish Club and made long lasting high school friendships. He then attended various colleges including Kansas University and Kansas State University. He worked as a security guard and also for Colorado Interstate Gas at one of the compressor stations.A highly intelligent individual, he invented and owned a patent for an Impact Sensing Vest.&nbsp; When wearing the vest, if you were shot it sent a signal to your command center. Quentin married Margaret “Maggie” Ann Dean on June 15, 1990, in Chickasha, Oklahoma, where they made their home. He loved her dearly, and they were married 32 years until her death in 2023. Quentin will always be remembered for his dry sense of humor.

Quentin is survived by his sister, Catherine Ann Griffith of Vancouver, Washington; niece, Cara Bailey and husband, Adam, and family; and nephew, Tim O’Neill and wife, Jill, and family.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ann “Maggie” Griffith; parents, C. Lyndon and Irene Griffith; and brother, Clarence L. Griffith.

Quentin Lindahl Griffith

Ernest (Ernie) Sarles, 61, died Sunday, May 19, 2024, at his home in Garden City, Kansas. He was born on November 5, 1962, in Rock Springs, Wyoming the son of Sherill Garland &amp; Gayle Powell.

Ernie grew up and attended High School in Dodge City, Kansas. He moved to Garden City in 1993 and worked various jobs as a mechanic. A car and motorcycle enthusiast, he also cherished the outdoors, spending time with loved ones and taking his Harley out for rides.

Survivors include his Wife- Michelle Sarles, Children- Linda &amp; Kenny Gossman, Mace &amp; Kylie Sarles, Raven Sarles, Chase Trussell, and Brooke Garvey, Mother- Gayle Powell, Siblings- Mike Sarles, Eugene Sarles, and Sheryl “Annie” Opdycke and 14 Grandchildren. He is Preceded in death by his Father- Sherill Garland.

Ernest (Ernie) Sarles, 61, died Sunday, May 19, 2024, at his home in Garden City, Kansas. He was born on November 5, 1962, in Rock Springs, Wyoming the son of Sherill Garland &amp; Gayle Powell.Ernie grew up and attended High School in Dodge City, Kansas. He moved to Garden City in 1993 and worked various jobs as a mechanic. A car and motorcycle enthusiast, he also cherished the outdoors, spending time with loved ones and taking his Harley out for rides.Survivors include his Wife- Michelle Sarles, Children- Linda &amp; Kenny Gossman, Mace &amp; Kylie Sarles, Raven Sarles, Chase Trussell, and Brooke Garvey, Mother- Gayle Powell, Siblings- Mike Sarles, Eugene Sarles, and Sheryl “Annie” Opdycke and 14 Grandchildren. Keren Elizabeth (Lowman) Duran, age 83, of Overland Park, KS, died Monday, May 6, 2024, in Overland Park surrounded by her family. She was born October 6, 1940, in Lebo, KS, the daughter of Clyde "Deacon" and Bertha Nadine (Combes) Lowman.

Keren attended elementary and high school in Lebo, KS. She continued her education at the Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia. She was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority. Keren married Robert "Bob" Duran on May 20, 1962, in Lebo, KS. She taught high school English in Dodge City, KS, until 1970 when the family moved to Tipton, MO. In 1972, the family moved to Johnson to begin farming with Bob's father. After her children were all in school, she returned to the classroom, teaching middle school English and Literature in Johnson for 25 years. Bob and Keren lived in Johnson for 48 years until they moved to a retirement community in Lawrence, KS in 2020. After Bob passed in 2021, Keren moved to Overland Park, KS to be closer to her two sons. Keren was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Johnson, the Altar Society, and the MNO club. She played the organ for church, and she enjoyed reading, quilting, playing cards, spending time at the lake, and taking long trips in the RV.

Keren is survived by her sons, Bob Duran and partner John Humbert of Roeland Park, KS, and Phil Duran and wife Krista of Leawood, KS; daughter, Keri Veach and husband Shae of Hays, KS; sister, Jeanie Facklam and husband Bert of Tescott, KS; brother-in-law, Richard Duran and wife Linda of Horseshoe Bay, TX; sisters-in-law, Anita Antony of Golden, CO, and Rosemary Wilkerson and husband Charlie of Johnson, KS; 11 grandchildren, Kayla Duran Latham, Brock Duran, Jared Duran, Devon Duran, Dani Duran, Dawson Duran, Dina Duran, Kelli Veach, Jodi Veach, Tucker Veach, and Mindi Veach; and ten nieces and nephews.

Keren is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and brother-in-law, Ron Antony.

The Mass may also be viewed live on the Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. Inurnment will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson, KS.
