
HUTCHINSON — Kris Kobach, as general counsel for the Alliance for Free Citizens, is lead counsel for plaintiff sheriffs in Texas and ICE officers wanting to continue to enforce current federal immigration law.

"The Biden administration issued a memo which orders ICE officers to stop deporting about 90% of the people that they were previously deporting under the Trump administration," Kobach said. "Included among those people that they can no longer deport under this new policy are aliens who must be detained and removed from the country under three different federal statutes. Basically, the Biden administration issued a memorandum telling ICE officers to start breaking federal law. The sheriffs are suffering, because that has fueled the crisis down along the border and in south Texas generally. Now that ICE has been forced to stand down, the ICE officers, by the way, they want to continue to work with the sheriffs and take custody of the illegal aliens the sheriffs are arresting virtually every day. They've teamed up to say, look, we just want to be able to follow the law."

Kobach contends that these really are people who the country has an interest in not having on its soil.

"These are serious criminals," Kobach said. "Our sheriffs have filed a legal complaint asserting that among the crimes committed by these illegal aliens, who are now being allowed to walk on the street include, rape of a child, aggravated sexual assault on a child, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, larceny, burglary, domestic violence, carrying a prohibited weapon, possession of drugs, resisting a law enforcement officer, DUI and the list goes on."

"It's not a big ask," Kobach said. "All we are asking the judge to do is for a nationwide injunction to allow ICE and the sheriffs of this country to follow the law, so they can once again cooperate in detaining and removing criminal aliens. It's a shocking situation when it takes a lawsuit now, for law enforcement officers to be permitted to follow the law, but unfortunately, that's where we are."

Kobach sees the Biden administration's strategy as twofold, ending interior enforcement, which is the focus of the current suit and at the same time, they are opening the border by ending the remain in Mexico policy that kept those with asylum claims on the Mexico side of the border until the U.S. decided if the claim had merit or not. 

Kobach is also running for attorney general in Kansas in 2022.

HUTCHINSON — The Miss Kansas pageant is coming up this week in Pratt.

"We have preliminary competitions Thursday, July 8, and Friday, July 9," said Stephanie Harris with the Miss Kansas organization. "The finals are on July 10. The qualifiers for the scholarship program come from all over the state.

"This is a unique year," Harris said. "These candidates have now held their titles for now two years due to the pandemic. In the fall of 2019, throughout that year and the winter of 2020, we had what we call local competitions and those are held in various communities across the state at different times of the year. The candidates go and they compete at those locals and when they win a local title, they advance on to the state competition in Pratt."

Contestants must be a high school graduate by the time of the state competition and between the ages of 17 and 25.

"The winner of the Miss Kansas competition will go on to compete for the title of Miss America," Harris said. "That will be held in December of this year in Connecticut at the Mohegan Sun."

Miss America 1997, Tara Dawn Holland was the last Miss Kansas to go on to win the Miss America title.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss noted as part of his 
Mid-America Business Conditions Index survey released this week that 
Kansas is doing well in some economic measures, but not in others.

"Wage
 growth is not as strong in Kansas," Goss said. "If you see business 
travel begin to increase for Kansas, that will sort itself out. For 
Kansas, the best news is agriculture and those linked to agriculture are
 doing very well in Kansas, even there, we've seen some softening in 
terms of farm income and commodity prices, but that looks pretty good."

Goss
 notes that it is still hard to parse out the difference between the 
muscle of good economic growth and the fat of inflation.

"The 
answer is somewhere in between," Goss said. "The Fed says it is 
transitory. A lot of folks say it's non-transitory, it's embedded 
inflation. I think the answer is, it's somewhere between the two. We're 
looking at inflation now running above four percent. That's double what 
the Fed is accepting."

Goss noted that Goldman Sachs believes oil prices will still go up from here.

"The
 Biden administration has taken the approach that, well, the higher 
price is not such a bad thing, it encourages us to move to alternative 
energy," Goss said. "They killed the Keystone XL pipeline. That was an 
$8 to $9 billion investment by the Canadians to ship oil from the tar 
sands in Canada down through the midsection of the country, also cutting
 back on drilling on federal land, that's part of the plan, I would 
argue."

Goss said with regard to one inflationary force, that 
Republicans will likely save President Biden from himself, in terms of 
cutting the size of some of his ambitious government expansion plans.

AAA: Gas prices staying high for holiday weekend


HUTCHINSON — People will be expressing their independence by traveling all across the U.S. this year.

"As

more than 47.7 million Americans will take to the nation's roadways and 
skies this Independence Day holiday weekend from July 1 to 5. Travel 
volumes are expected to nearly fully recover to pre-pandemic levels."

This is going to be the second-highest Independence Day travel volume on record, trailing only 2019.

"We're
 looking at, overall, just 2.5% fewer Americans are expected to travel 
this year compared to Independence Day in 2019," Steward said. "This 
represents an increase of nearly 40% compared to last year, when total 
travel fell to 34.2 million travelers."

Despite the highest gas prices in seven years, more than 91% of holiday travel will be by car.

AAA: Travel almost all the way back for Fourth of July

Combating elder abuse has been a big emphasis of Kansas Attorney General
 Derek Schmidt during his tenure in that post and he highlighted some 
ways the Kansas Legislature came to the aid of older Kansans in an 
interview with Hutch Post this week.

"They created a statute that 
encourages and enables the creation of what they call multidisciplinary 
teams to combat elder abuse all around the state," Schmidt said. "This 
is a concept that's well proven and it's pretty common sense. The basic 
idea is everybody who works on part of the problem, whether they are law
 enforcement, prosecutors, social workers, volunteers, other community 
leaders, whatever it may be, they come together around a table 
periodically and they compare notes on cases to make sure that the right
 hand and the left hand are coordinated across disciplines, multi 
disciplines."

These groups have worked well in the state's urban 
areas, but because of jurisdictional issues, this legislation was needed
 to make the functions work better in the rural parts of the state. 
Also, the Legislature has given the laws against abusing elderly people 
more teeth.

"They actually raised the criminal penalties and 
lengthened the prison terms for people who abuse," Schmidt said. 
"Mistreatment of an elder person is a crime. Again, I think it's going 
to be a very useful tool in trying to combat elder abuse and bring to 
justice those who commit it."

Schmidt also joined a bipartisan 
coalition of state attorneys general in a letter to the U.S. Senate 
urging passage of H.R. 1215, known as the “Stop Senior Scams Act.” The 
measure, which has passed the U.S. House and has 21 sponsoring senators,
 would provide innovative ways to combat the financial exploitation of 
seniors.

"Here in Kansas,
 we rose five cents over the past week," said Shawn Steward with AAA 
Kansas. "We're now at an average of $2.86 a gallon. The good news is, 
we're 20 cents less than the national average and we're 10th cheapest in
 the United States."

"We've seen a recent drop in demand after the 
Memorial Day weekend,"&nbsp;Steward said. 

Supplies are also getting more robust with 
refinery utilization at a high level. It's also looking like crude oil 
prices may drop soon.

"OPEC and its allies, including Russia, 
announced last week that they plan to gradually increase crude 
production in July," Steward said. "This could lead to a decrease in 
crude oil prices."

Crude oil accounts for more than 50% of the price at the pump.

That's going to have inflationary pressures. The Federal Reserve says that they see this as transitory. We hope and pray it is transitory."

Goss noted that it isn't the same as the late 1970s under President Carter.

"We don't have the oil prices pushing," Goss said. "Oil prices are higher. We're now at $68 a barrel, but we're not seeing that supply-side push in terms of oil. We are seeing it in other areas. For example, lumber. We are seeing that growth there, out the roof. We're seeing housing prices 12% growth year over year."

Another drag on growth in the opinion of several of the managers Goss surveys is a lack of skilled workers.

"Twenty-three percent of the supply managers listed the shortage of workers and the supply of workers as being the number one challenge for 2021 to their company," Goss said. 

Due to the bounce back growth of the economy, however, the overall Mid-America Business Conditions Index was at a strong 72.3 for May. Anything above 50 is considered growth.

Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann along with both U.S. Senators introduced legislation to stop an executive order from the Biden administration that they are concerned could infringe on private property rights in the name of fighting climate change.

"The executive order signed in January was very vague," Mann said. "It referred to ongoing reports. That raised some alarms. The report actually came out week before last and basically, the report still doesn't have a lot of details. The concern would be that the government would make steps toward involuntary conservation."

The so-called 30x30 plan would require federal control of much more land than is currently that way in Kansas.

"Kansas is in an interesting spot, because 98% of our land is not currently in conservation, only 2% is," Mann said. "Other states, much more of their land is already in conservation. We introduced legislation that effectively would block the executive order altogether."

This issue has been incredibly emotional for Kansans.

"This goal of 30% of American lands being in conservation by 2030 should not be the goal and is not the direction that we should go," Mann said. "As a result of this, Kansans are rightly concerned about the potential land grab that could occur. What ought to occur is the executive order to be done away with."

As part of the One Planet Summit in January, at least 50 countries committed to protecting 30 percent of the planet, including land and sea, over the next decade. The U.S. did not participate, as it took place prior to Biden's inauguration.

Mann introduces legislation to roll back 30 by 30 order

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt joined 18 of his colleagues in sending a letter to President Biden asking him to reopen the process on the Keystone XL pipeline in light of the cyberattack that shut down a portion of the Colonial Pipeline earlier this month.

"On his first day in office, President Biden canceled the permit for the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline," Schmidt said. "We've sued him over that, because we think that cancellation violated due process. Not only is that a pipeline issue, but who is ever going to make a large investment in any capital project that requires government approval if the government can just turn on a dime and say, I changed my mind, sorry, you've invested billions of dollars, now you're stuck."

Schmidt believes the marketplace will help fix the issues that were caused by the Colonial outage, if it is allowed to work.

"At the end of the day, we don't have sufficient redundancy," Schmidt said. "We don't have sufficient capacity, if a large pipeline goes off line, as the Colonial Pipeline did. The result has been gas lines like we haven't seen since the 1970s on the East Coast and gasoline at $7 a gallon. Markets work, as long as their excesses are properly monitored and controlled. Markets work. We have to trust them and allow that to happen."

Schmidt and 20 other attorneys general filed suit in March in Texas against Biden's order. Their argument is the power to regulate international commerce resides with Congress. Congress expressly permitted the project in the 2011 Temporary Payroll Tax Cut Continuation Act.

HUTCHINSON —&nbsp;As part of its 100th anniversary celebration, Dillons is working 
on a book so everyone who wants one can have a piece of their history.

"We're
 putting together a complete book of all of the wonderful photos from 
our history," said Sheila Regehr with Dillons. "The archives at Dillons 
are absolutely amazing. In this book, we've captured our history with 
timelines, with wonderful photos, with pieces from the archive. Whether 
its the original ticker tape from the very first appearance on the New 
York Stock Exchange, to some of the ad templates that we may have used 
back in the '70s and the '80s, captured all of that history together in 
one book."

The hope is to have those out well before the Kansas State Fair. 

"We're
 looking at late July, early August, where the book will be available, 
but when you think about our reach across the state of Kansas, for me 
personally, it's so humbling to hear those very kind words," Regehr 
said. "I can't tell you how many times I've heard a customer refer to 
one of our locations as 'their Dillons.' That's another reason why I 
think people will love to see this book and love to see the history laid
 out."

The plan is to have a big presence for employees, former 
employees and the public at the Kansas State Fair and also to help the 
hungry across the Sunflower State.

"Throughout 2020, we were able 
to provide more than $2 million back to our Kansas communities," Regehr 
said. "With our 100th anniversary, we're dedicating $100,000 from our 
Zero Hunger, Zero Waste Foundation, specifically to support hunger 
relief efforts in Kansas."

The official 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Dillons was May 13.

Dillons putting together book to commemorate 100 years

HUTCHINSON —&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/c4da66b3-9483-480b-b8f5-0e2619d38264">Jimmie Nelms, the killer of Kansas State Trooper Conroy O'Brien, will remain behind bars, but that's only guaranteed for three years.</a>

"Obviously, I was happy that they are keeping him in prison for three more years," said Conroy's brother, Kelvin. "I was disappointed that they didn't take advantage of passing him for ten years, because they could have done that."

That's exactly what the parole board did previously in 2011.

"Prior to the parole hearing, the Zoom hearing we had in March, the parole board actually said they were going to use the 1993 crime bill as a guideline on this particular case, or any case of a crime that was committed prior to 1993. The crime bill of 1993 states life in prison without parole or the death penalty, one of the two, so here we are, going to be up for parole again in three years."

O'Brien thanked those who sent letters in support of the denial of Nelms' parole.

"There was an overwhelming response from the public to deny parole," O'Brien said. "I know there were letters that came from California, from Massachusetts, Florida, all over, to ask the parole board to deny parole, so I think he was denied parole was the public response."

Nelms is 74 years old and according to public records is incarcerated at the Norton Correctional Facility.

Parole denied for state trooper's killer, but just for three years


HUTCHINSON — 
Karen Hammersmith with the Reno County Health Department says she has 
spoken to the local doctors that work with kids and parents who are 
considering vaccinating their 12-15 year olds with the Pfizer vaccine 
once it is cleared later this week should talk to their doctor.

"They
 definitely want anybody that wants the vaccine to get the vaccine 
especially if you have some high-risk factors," Hammersmith said. "You 
can also get it if you don't have high-risk factors, because the vaccine
 is improved. We know that what it prevents is serious complications, 
which we have seen in that younger generation. We just haven't seen as 
much of that."

It is the intent of the health department to get in some Pfizer vaccine, in light of the new developments.

"We
 plan to order the vaccine for next week," Hammersmith said. "Once a 
week, we put in an order to KDHE and then they get that from the federal
 government as to how much vaccine is available. We are going to order 
some Pfizer. It's got a little bit of an issue with the shelf life."

The
 U.S. Food and Drug Administration in late February approved storage and
 transportation of the Pfizer vaccine at standard freezer temperatures 
for up to two weeks instead of ultra-cold conditions. Before that, it 
had required ultra-cold storage.

Young adults are also encouraged to get their shots.

"We
 still want to push that vaccine out to those specifically in the 20 to 
49-year-old group, too, that we have a lot less people vaccinated," 
Hammersmith said. "You can come as a family. We can get the parents, we 
can get the kids 12 and up all vaccinated at the same time."

Health official: Consult with doctor on vaccine for 12- to 15-year-olds


HUTCHINSON,
Kan. — There are thousands of Kansas taxpayers who will leave money on the table if they don't act by May 17.

"Not
 filing a tax return can mean you lose a refund," said Michael Devine 
with the IRS. "In 2017, more than 13,000 Kansas taxpayers didn't claim 
refunds worth more than $13 million."

Normally these three-year 
old returns have to be filed by April 15, but that deadline was extended
 with the rest to the 17th of May earlier this year.c

"Some people
 don't file because they don't have a requirement to, they don't make 
enough money," said Devine. "They don't make enough money. They should 
file, because they could be eligible for a refund or even for something 
like the Earned Income Tax Credit. In 2017, that could have been more 
than $6,000 in a refund. Some people owe money and they don't want to 
file a tax return, because they think the IRS will find them. The IRS 
doesn't forget people that don't file."

In fact, filing those old returns can help you with your tax bill in some circumstances.

"If
 you're not current on your taxes, filing those tax returns, if you were
 due a refund in 2017, but you had a tax bill in 2018, that refund that 
you would get for 2017 would be credited to any federal tax debts or 
even student loans," Devine said. "Filing the tax return could reduce a 
tax bill. I promise the longer you wait to get current on your taxes, 
the more you would owe in interest and penalties."

IRS: 2017 Refund dollars left on the table if you don't file by May 17


HUTCHINSON — Kansas U.S. Sen. Dr. Roger Marshall hears his constituents in 
their concern for the rural implications of President Biden's plan of 
protecting 30% of the U.S. by 2030.

"You talk about getting people
 fired up," Marshall said. "We've done about 23 town halls now, I think 
and this is the No. 1 emotional issue out there, that President 
Biden is proposing that the federal government control 30% of our land 
by the year 2030. You talk about upsetting people, start messing with 
their property rights."

Marshall notes that it would take a lot to get that much land out of service in Kansas.

"Only
 3 percent of the land in Kansas is owned by the government, by the 
state or the federal government," Marshall said. "Even if we would take 
that and we would put it into CRP, if we would take 30 percent of the 
farmland in Reno County out of production, think what it would do to 
downtown Hutchinson, Kansas."

There's no mistaking it, jobs would be lost, he said.

"If
 we would take 30% of Kansas land out of production, it would be the end
 of so many hospitals in the state of Kansas," Marshall said. "We would 
have to consolidate more schools. It would probably mean losing 75,000 
jobs in the state of Kansas."

HUTCHINSON—Three people had minor injures after an accident just before 9:30a.m. Saturday at the Prairie Skies Air Show in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1962 Beech 23 Fixed Wing Single Engine airplane piloted by Dallas Arthur Hewett, 63, Wichita, attempted to take off from Hutchinson Airport.&nbsp;

The aircraft had a power failure in the engine and stalled out. The pilot attempted to land, made a hard landing in the wheat field just south of the airport.

The KHP reported&nbsp;Hewett and two passengers&nbsp; Samantha Leonor&nbsp;Dagorret, 29, Wichita, and Maxton W. Susee, 9, Hutchison, had minor injuries.&nbsp; The KHP did not report where they were treated. The accident remains under investigation.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A quiet noon hour at the 14th and Main Dillons was disrupted by PETA protesters Thursday.

Three
 protesters arrived in a white rental van just before noon. Marley 
Delgado, Luis Correal and a member who wished to remain anonymous 
unloaded two wheelbarrows filled with coconuts.

Correal and the 
anonymous supporter were dressed in monkey outfits to protest Chaokoh, a
 brand that PETA says uses monkeys to inhumanely pick coconuts in 
Thailand.

PETA supporter Marley Delgado said the trio was there "urging the company to stop profiting off forced monkey labor." Delgado says a PETA Asia investigation found the coconut industry is using monkey labor to pick the coconuts and traced it back to Chaokoh. The group is asking Kroger to remove the brand from all of its stores.

The Dillons location was blindsided. The manager on duty was simply 
covering for a store that currently does not have a manager. The manager
 on duty called the local media contact, Sheila Regehr, and she began 
her journey to the store.

"Dillons supports cruel monkey labor," the trio chanted. "There's no excuse for animal abuse," they added.

Shoppers were surprised to see the disruption. One shopper who wishes
 to remain anonymous called it a waste of time. "I don't want to lose my
 fuel points!" the shopper said when asked for a name. He questioned why
 the demonstration was not at the courthouse or a distribution center.

Supporters chose the Main Street location because it faced a busy street and had a public sidewalk that entered the store.

PETA
 plans to visit more Kroger-owned stores until it joins the likes of 
28,000 other stores that have stopped profiting off cruel, forced monkey
 labor.

"The coconuts that are in Chaokoh are picked by monkeys who are stolen from their families just as babies. They're kept caged and chained their whole lives. They can sometimes have their canine teeth removed so they're unable to defend themselves. And they are forced to pick coconuts all during the harvest season," Delgado said.

None of the protesters are from Hutchinson. In fact, none of them are
 from Kansas. Delgado is from Denver, Colorado, while Correal is from 
Atlanta, Georgia. The unnamed member hails from Portland, Oregon. The 
trio arrived in Hutchinson Wednesday and purchased the ethically-sourced
 coconuts that were picked humanely, then scattered in front of the 
Dillons entrance.

Delgado confirmed the group would pick up the coconuts after the demonstration. She said the coconuts would then be donated.

About
 30 minutes into the planned one-hour demonstration, Sheila Regehr of 
Dillons showed up on the scene. She kindly asked the protesters to move 
the demonstration to a public place.

Regehr declined to comment on the situation until a proper statement could be released to the media.

Around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Regehr released the following statement:

“Kroger
 has a longstanding commitment to responsible business practices, 
including the humane treatment of animals. We have re-engaged our 
suppliers, as well as other stakeholders, on this issue to re-confirm 
they are also protecting animal welfare.”

PETA supporters dressed as monkeys protest at Kan. Dillons


HUTCHINSON — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann says the optics of 
Wednesday night's speech by President Joe Biden did not send the right 
message to the country.

"Everyone in Congress that wants to be 
vaccinated has been," Mann said. "Everybody sitting six feet apart, that
 image is not what we want to portray to America. It's time to get 
through this pandemic. It's time to take the masks off. It is time to 
move forward, return to regular orders in the Congress."

Mann sees the pandemic as the pretext for expansion of government.

"We've
 seen that accelerated the last four months, the last 100 days of the 
Biden administration," Mann said. "First off was the American Rescue 
Plan, which was $1.9 trillion. Only nine percent went to actual COVID 
health relief. The rest went to other things. Money we don't have, 
spending it on things we don't need. Then, a more than $2 trillion 
infrastructure proposal, then last night, the American Families Plan, 
another $2 trillion. That totals $6 trillion on top of the almost $30 
trillion in debt we already have."

The plan is being touted as only having an effect on those with high incomes, over $400,000 a year.

"This
 is the largest tax increase proposed in a generation," Mann said. "It's
 very concerning, because it will affect everybody. It has to. Most of 
those folks employ other people. This notion that it's going to impact a
 few but not everybody else, is just simply not true. The corporate tax 
rate as proposed would be higher than communist China."

Mann 
believes there is a good chance that Republicans could retake the House 
in 2022, because he says the country doesn't want to see this expansive 
growth of government. That would leave a very small window for Biden's 
agenda to get through Congress at all.

🎙 Mann: Biden's expansion of government 'will affect everybody'

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly vetoed two bills that would have<a href="https://eaglepost.netlify.app/dashboard/littleapple/posts/52596671-8d8c-44c4-968b-6733edc381b3"> changed the school curriculum</a> in Kansas.

"One of them would have created a requirement that students at some point take a civics test that would be drawn from the U.S. naturalization test in order to graduate from high school," said Mark Tallman, Vice President for Advocacy with the Kansas Association of School Boards. "It did not require any particular passing score. It was amended to also require that all students take a course in personal financial literacy to graduate from high school."

It's not necessarily that either of those ideas are wrong, but that the legislature is the wrong venue to have the discussion.

"In both cases, the State Board felt that was stepping on their Constitutional role, which they believe and courts have indicated, although it's not black and white, have responsibility for kind of setting curriculum," Tallman said. "There were also concerns from local school boards who I represent, about these also kind of addressing curriculum issues at the local level."

These and the other bills vetoed by the governor can still be overridden when the legislature returns in May, if they can get the necessary support.

Number one, it will have to be brought up for an override," Tallman said. "In that case, two-thirds of both the House and Senate must approve the bill. I don't think any of them got two-thirds of either house the first time through."

Both houses are adjourned until Monday, May 3 at 10 a.m.

Tallman: Kelly curriculum vetoes are about role of State Board

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council approved the public art portion of the law enforcement center project.

"We were really impressed with Mr. Warren," said Hutchinson Police Chief Jeff Hooper. "This is a project that he normally wouldn't take on. It's way below the size and scope of the projects that he usually takes on here, much grander projects. His father was a former police chief and so, it kind of touched his heart being able to do a sculpture for us and honoring fallen officers. That's why he's chosen to take on this project."

Thomas Jay Warren has over 30 years full-time professional sculpting experience and is an elected member of the National Sculpture Society. His work for Hutchinson will be unique to the city.

"The sculpture will be life-size, but kneeling, so that you're basically at eye-level with the officer," said Justin Combs, Director of Parks and Facilities.

The sculpture will incorporate the city's official patch and the equipment on the officer's duty belt, molded from originals and reproduced on the figure. The city approved $50,000 for the project Tuesday.

Hutchinson approves sculpture for law enforcement center

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two men arrested in connection with the April 11 shooting that left one man dead and another injured in Hutchinson were formally charged in Reno County District Court Tuesday.

Sixty-four-year-old Sandral Wade is charged with one count of first degree murder in the shooting death of Orlando Gipson. He’s also charged with attempted first degree murder in the shooting of Landre Bowie, and charged with conspiracy to commit first degree murder. A conviction would land him in prison for life without parole for at least 50 years.

The co-defendant in the case, 71-year-old Robert Lagrange faces a single count of conspiracy to commit first degree murder. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 41 years in prison. Reno County District Attorney Tom Stanton told the court that the investigation continues and the complaint against Lagrange could be amended upward.&nbsp;

He was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.Wade was appointed a public defender while Lagrange was appointed Steve Osborn to be his attorney.Both are expected back in court June 16.--------------

Two men who have been jailed in connection with a shooting earlier this month will make an appearance on charges to be filed related to the case in court on Tuesday.Reno County District Attorney Tom Stanton told Hutch Post Monday afternoon that by the end of the day Monday, charges would be filed against 64-year-old Sandral Wade and 71-year-old Robert Louis Lagrange in the shooting of two men, one fatally in the 1500 block of West 12th April 11.According to a previous release from Hutchinson Police, at 1:39 a.m. on April 11, officers on patrol near 5th and Hendricks heard gunshots north of their location.While they were investigating, a 911 call came into dispatch advising of a shooting. Officers arrived in the 1500 block of West 12th where they contacted a 42-year-old black male laying in the street with gunshot wounds to his abdomen.The victim was transferred to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment and survived. Officers located a second victim, a 46-year-old black male laying in the front yard of a nearby residence with a single gunshot wound to his chest. The 46-year-old was also taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was pronounced dead.The names of the victims have not been released.
