A Ellis County man who was accused of killing his wife in 2022 has been found competent to serve a prison sentence.

Jay Schumacher's attorney had requested an evaluation to determine if he was eligible to serve his sentence at Larned Correction Facility, in a secure mental health facility, instead of serving a standard prison sentence.

Jay Schumacher, 67, Hays, who was accused of beating his wife to death, pleaded no contest to three felony charges that are expected to put him behind bars for a decade or more.

Schumacher was first charged with killing his wife,&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/2c3cf903-b65a-45fa-bb67-a90446c67e61">Karen Schumacher</a>,&nbsp;in 2022.

According to court documents,&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/31909cf2-4721-42e3-ab7e-5e2de4392888">Jay Schumacher&nbsp;</a>was initially charged with murder in the first degree — mistreatment of a dependent adult, aggravated battery, domestic battery and mistreatment of a dependent adult.

This week, after an evaluation by clinical staff at Larned, Schumacher was determined to qualify for routine disposition of his case.

According to Schumacher's plea agreement, he agreed to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter, aggravated battery and mistreatment of a dependent adult.

The voluntary manslaughter plea is an Alford plea. Under an Alford plea, the defendant does not have to admit to the criminal act and can maintain innocence. It also allows the state to reach an agreement on the length of a prison sentence that may not have coincided with the actual charge.

Under the agreement, both parties agreed Schumacher would serve a minimum sentence of 114 months, or nine years and six months in prison for counts one and two,&nbsp; voluntary manslaughter and aggravated battery.

A sentencing has been set for 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 6 in front of Judge Glenn Braun in Ellis County District Court.

Ellis County man accused of killing wife found competent; sentencing set for January

A man accused in the death of his infant son has been bound over for trial.&nbsp;

Abraham Duran Leon, 29, Hays, was bound over on first-degree murder charges on Wednesday, Nov. 13, in the death of his&nbsp;5-month-old son, Fernando Leon III, on April 2 in Hays.

Abraham Leon faces three alternative charges: first-degree murder in the commission of a felony possession of methamphetamine, first-degree murder in the commission of a felony aggravated endangerment of a child, and murder in the second-degree unintentional but reckless.

An autopsy found Abraham Leon's son had methamphetamine in his system, Prosecutor Aaron Cunningham said.

Emergency personnel were dispatched at 12:15 p.m. on April 2 to the Rodeway Inn in Hays, responding to a report that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.keithleyfuneralchapels.com/obituaries/fernando-leon">Fernando Leon III</a>, an infant, was not breathing.

Abraham Leon was present in the motel room and was arrested for interference with law enforcement before being released the same day.

Abraham Leon was later rearrested on the charges related to his son's death.

Abraham Leon was also bound over on charges of possession of opiate, opium, narcotic, or certain stimulant, use or possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia.

He was additionally bound over in a third preliminary hearing for charges from 2023 of criminal damage to property and interference with a law enforcement officer.

Leon was out on bond in connection with the 2023 case when his son died.

Leon has filed motions with the court in an attempt to represent himself. Judge Glenn Braun has denied those motions. He continues to be represented by attorneys&nbsp;Cassy Zeigler and&nbsp;Christopher Rohr.

As of Friday morning, Leon was in custody at the Ellis County Jail.&nbsp;

Trail dates have yet to be set in any of these cases.

Hays man accused in death of infant son bound over for trial

On Friday at TMP, TMP-Marian senior Brooke Koenigsman officially signed a letter of intent to play softball at Iowa Western University in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Koenigsman helped lead the Monarchs to their first state
tournament appearance since 2018 last season and finished her junior campaign with a .640 average with 21 extra-base hits (nine doubles, seven triples and
five home runs), 64 RBI and 39 runs scored.

She said the coaches were a big reason for choosing Iowa
Western University. 

“The coaches were amazing. I loved my visit when I went up
there,” Koenigsman. “They treated me great when I went up there.”

Koenigsman and the Monarchs will look to return to state for
the second straight season this spring, something the Monarchs haven’t done since
qualifying for state in three straight seasons between 2016 and 2018.

HaysMed issues statement on diversity of staff

To my fellow residents of western Kansas,

I tendered my resignation from HaysMed on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024. My last day in the clinic will be Feb. 17, 2025.

It has been a wonderful journey for my family and me since I began my practice at HMC in July 2015. Currently, I am one of only two remaining medical oncologists who physically reside west of Hays. For that reason, I struggled deeply with my decision to leave. It is never easy to make such a decision, especially when reflecting on all the patients I have had the privilege of helping over the past nine years. My greatest concern is how the people of Western Kansas will access medical oncology services in the future.

Ultimately, my decision to leave was guided by how I believe medical care can best be delivered to the people of rural Kansas. The simple truth is that the administration at HaysMed and I have differing views on the need for a new model of health care. In my opinion, the current regional hub health care model that HaysMed operates under is unlikely to remain viable in the long term. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge that the departure of approximately 20 health care providers from the hospital in the past year also influenced my decision.

I do not know what the future holds for medical oncology in Western Kansas, especially as HMC has made it clear that it will enforce its restrictive employment covenants regardless of the impact. The national shortage of oncologists, particularly in rural America, only amplifies this challenge. However, I am confident that there will always be an increasing need for the services I provide across the United States.

I bear no ill will toward the administration at HaysMed. For the sake of the health of our community and rural Kansas as a whole, I sincerely hope they succeed in the extraordinarily difficult task of recruiting new physicians to our wonderful community.

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank all my patients and the people of Western Kansas who have supported my family and me. Thank you all.

Thomas More Prep-Marian broke ground on its new Creative Learning Building on Thursday afternoon.

Dirt work is already underway on the site, which is on the north side of the current TMP building on Hall Street.

The new building, which will be 6,400 square feet, will allow the school to offer classes in welding, computer-aided drafting (CAD), fabrications, 3D printing, robotics, carpentry, construction and management, Chad Meitner, principal, said.

The wood shop will be relocated from the school's basement to the new building. The school also hopes to add new equipment, including a laser cutter, CNC machine, plasma cutter, large format printers and 3D printers. A greenhouse to facilitate ag education will also be a part of the new facility.

Meitner said the Creative Learning Building will allow some classes to be team-taught across disciplines.&nbsp;

He gave examples of graphic art, geometry in construction and various science classes, which could use the space and tools for labs or individual or group projects.

"Students on different career and college pathways will all be able to advance their learning and unlock their creativity with this new building and course offerings," Meitner said.

"TMP-Marian is excited to offer this expansion of opportunity while maintaining our traditional&nbsp;high standards and individual&nbsp;support and attention. I can't imagine a situation where a student would not thrive in TMP-Marian's expanded system."

Major sponsors for the project include Hess Services, the Dreiling Trust, Don Gottschalk and family, Klem Karlin of the class of '70, and Diehl Oil.

Fort Hays State University’s Math and Computer Science departments hosted the annual Math Relays on Nov. 13 in the Memorial Union.

Area high school students competed in six different tests of mathematical skills throughout the day. The tests, categorized by subject, include using number sense, trigonometry, algebraic manipulations, geometric measurement, applications of algebraic arithmetic, and calculations with a calculator.

Forty-eight Kansas high schools, ranging from 1A to 6A, brought 650 students to compete in the relays. Schools were grouped into divisions based on size (1A, 2-3A, and 4-6A). Each student completed tests individually or in teams of three, and all students took at least four of the six tests.

The top six individuals and teams at each grade level earned points towards their school scores. Medals were given to the top three finishes for each test, and the top three schools in each division received a plaque.

“FHSU Math Relays is a great event for our Hays High students to showcase skills they normally don’t get to showcase outside of the classroom,” said high school math teacher Dustin Dreher.&nbsp;“It gives the students a chance to compare their math skills to not only students from their school but from schools across the state.”

650 Kansas high school students compete in FHSU’s 45th Math Relays

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team fell to Nebraska-Kearney Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the 2024 MIAA Volleyball Championship, losing 21-25, 17-25, 24-26 at the Civic Arena. The Tigers conclude the season with a record of 12-14, while the Lopers improve to 29-1 and move on to the semifinals to face off against either Washburn or Northwest Missouri State.

The Tigers stuck with the third-ranked team in the country all evening, totaling just six fewer kills, two fewer blocks and one more service ace.

Fort Hays State took control early, leading by as many as five at four separate junctures in the first set. Several early blocks and three kills from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/claire-olson/7947">Claire Olson</a>&nbsp;helped the Tigers build an 11-6 lead and maintain that edge until the score was 14-9. UNK then went on an 8-3 run to tie the score at 17 before taking the lead for good at 19-18. The Lopers carried the momentum into the second set, leading wire-to-wire to take the frame 25-17.

The Tigers battled back in the third set, keeping things close the entire way. Fort Hays State led for the majority of the frame and did not trail by more than one point until the final rally of the night. The teams traded one-point leads early in the set before FHSU methodically built a four-point lead. The Tigers led by four as late as 15-11 and later led by three at 19-16, but the Lopers stormed back to tie things up at 19. The teams traded points after the Lopers regained the lead at 23-22 before UNK sealed the deal with back-to-back kills.

Dr. Wallace Curry reported on his Facebook page on Friday that Dr. Manmohan S. Biring, a pulmonologist, had left HaysMed.&nbsp;

Biring was no longer listed on the HaysMed provider page as of Wednesday, and no one answered at his HaysMed office.

The Hays Post tried to reach Biring for comment, but a phone message was not returned.

It was not clear on what terms&nbsp;Biring departed the hospital.

HaysMed declined to answer questions about&nbsp;Biring, stating in an email Wednesday, "HayMed does not publicly comment on personnel matters as this is confidential information that is not appropriate for disclosure."

Biring's departure is in the wake of a surgeon who also left last week.

Dr. Jerod Grove, general surgeon, resigned from HaysMed as of Nov. 12.

Grove<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/b34af9aa-1485-42c1-a272-afe7c74a36fb">&nbsp;has sued HaysMed to stop the hospital from enforcing a noncompete clause that he says prevents him from practicing medicine in western Kansas.</a>

According to his lawsuit,&nbsp;HaysMed has lost 12 physicians, two certified registered nurse anesthetists, and three midlevel providers in recent years. None of these have remained in the region and provide services to the residents of the state's western half.

Services impacts include cardiology, urology, orthopedics, OB/GYN, hospitalists, oncology, nephrology and general family medicine, the lawsuit said.

According to the lawsuit, during his time at Hays Med, "Dr. Grove began to notice certain troubling aspects of the treatment of HaysMed staff. Various issues were brought to his attention, and ultimately, he felt the best course of action was to resign his employment."

Current and former doctors and staff expressed concern about hospital services and the role of the administration in August.

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation has awarded the Hays Area Bicyclists a $2,500 grant.

The Hansen Foundation grant will allow the Hays Area Bicyclists to improve the experience of cyclists who participate in Tour die Kapellen (TdK, TourDieKapellen.com/). TdK is an annual organized bike and bus tour to historic limestone churches in eastern Ellis County. The event is a joint venture between the churches and the Hays Symphony. Net proceeds for the event are distributed among the participating churches and the Hays Symphony.

“We are honored and thrilled to receive this grant”, said Kay Werth, president of the Hays Area Bicyclists. “This unique event reaches out to many cycling enthusiasts throughout the Midwest. It promotes our Northwest Kansas cycling, Ellis County’s Volga-German history, and our local symphony.”

Next year’s Tour die Kapellen will be held on July 12, 2025.

Michael
Paul Schmidt, age 76, of Hays, Kansas, passed away on November 19, 2024
surrounded by his loving family at Hays Medical Center. Born on June 30, 1948,
in Hays, he was the firstborn of Patrick Joseph and Rose Grace (Leiker)
Schmidt, part of a close-knit family of six children.

Michael’s early life was marked by dedication and achievement. He graduated
from Jefferson West Grade School in 1962 and later attended St. Joseph Military
Academy, where he distinguished himself as a leader, achieving the rank of
Major. In 1964, he was honored with the prestigious Superior Junior Cadet
Military Award and went on to serve as Secretary/Treasurer of the school's
inaugural Lettermen’s Club. His talents in sports were evident as he earned
letters in basketball and baseball, and joyfully claimed victory as the senior
class ping pong champion. Continuing his educational journey, Mike graduated
from Fort Hays State University in 1970 with an AB English Degree, embarking on
a rewarding career as a teacher in Kirwin, Kansas City, and Hays.



Throughout his life, Michael built a diverse and extensive work history that
spanned various fields, including education, insurance, freight and trucking,
hospitality, soil conservation, oil production, commercial and residential
painting, retail sales, law enforcement, and positions at county, state, and
federal levels. Additionally he supervised the publication of the Hays R.L.
Polk City directory on two occasions.



A dedicated member of his community, Mike was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church, and a 3rd degree St. Joseph Council #1325 Knights of Columbus member.
His commitment to his alma mater was reflected in his life membership in the
TMP-Marian Alumni Association, where his contributions were recognized with the
Alumni Service Award in 2001. Mike’s spirit of service was exemplified by his
participation in 41 consecutive ACE Auctions and many other school events.



Michael is remembered by his two sons, Eric M. Schmidt (Katrina Thyfault) and
their children Kyla and Kobe, of Hays, Kansas, and Ryan V. Schmidt (Rachel
Befort) and their children Vincent, Vivienne, Violette, Valentin, and Vonn, of
Overland Park, Kansas. He is also survived by five siblings: Terry (Barb)
Schmidt, of Elkhorn, NE, Mark (Dorothy) Schmidt, of Aurora, CO, Larry (Katie
Massieon) Schmidt, of Salina, KS, Patti (John) Lonnon, of Hays, KS, and Renee
(Jay) Hood, of Plainfield, IN; Additionally, he is remembered fondly by three
aunts, Margaret Walters, of Topeka, KS, Betty Leiker, of Broken Arrow, OK and
Sherry Leiker of Hays, KS.

Preceding him in death were his beloved parents; paternal grandparents, Paul A.
(Regina Denning) Schmidt; and maternal grandparents, John F. (Philomena Rupp)
Leiker.


Funeral services will be 9:30 AM on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at St. Joseph
Catholic Church, located at 215 W. 13th Street in Hays, with Fr. Curtis Carlson
officiating. Family and friends unable to attend in person can join via

surrounded by his loving family at Hays Medical Center. Born on June 30, 1948,
in Hays, he was the firstborn of Patrick Joseph and Rose Grace (Leiker)
Schmidt, part of a close-knit family of six children.

Michael’s early life was marked by dedication and achievement. He graduated
from Jefferson West Grade School in 1962 and later attended St. Joseph Military
Academy, where he distinguished himself as a leader, achieving the rank of
Major. In 1964, he was honored with the prestigious Superior Junior Cadet
Military Award and went on to serve as Secretary/Treasurer of the school's
inaugural Lettermen’s Club. His talents in sports were evident as he earned
letters in basketball and baseball, and joyfully claimed victory as the senior
class ping pong champion. Continuing his educational journey, Mike graduated
from Fort Hays State University in 1970 with an AB English Degree, embarking on
a rewarding career as a teacher in Kirwin, Kansas City, and Hays.

Throughout his life, Michael built a diverse and extensive work history that
spanned various fields, including education, insurance, freight and trucking,
hospitality, soil conservation, oil production, commercial and residential
painting, retail sales, law enforcement, and positions at county, state, and
federal levels. Additionally he supervised the publication of the Hays R.L.
Polk City directory on two occasions.

A dedicated member of his community, Mike was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church, and a 3rd degree St. Joseph Council #1325 Knights of Columbus member.
His commitment to his alma mater was reflected in his life membership in the
TMP-Marian Alumni Association, where his contributions were recognized with the
Alumni Service Award in 2001. Mike’s spirit of service was exemplified by his
participation in 41 consecutive ACE Auctions and many other school events.

Michael is remembered by his two sons, Eric M. Schmidt (Katrina Thyfault) and
their children Kyla and Kobe, of Hays, Kansas, and Ryan V. Schmidt (Rachel
Befort) and their children Vincent, Vivienne, Violette, Valentin, and Vonn, of
Overland Park, Kansas. He is also survived by five siblings: Terry (Barb)
Schmidt, of Elkhorn, NE, Mark (Dorothy) Schmidt, of Aurora, CO, Larry (Katie
Massieon) Schmidt, of Salina, KS, Patti (John) Lonnon, of Hays, KS, and Renee
(Jay) Hood, of Plainfield, IN; Additionally, he is remembered fondly by three
aunts, Margaret Walters, of Topeka, KS, Betty Leiker, of Broken Arrow, OK and
Sherry Leiker of Hays, KS.Preceding him in death were his beloved parents; paternal grandparents, Paul A.
(Regina Denning) Schmidt; and maternal grandparents, John F. (Philomena Rupp)
Leiker.

Funeral services will be 9:30 AM on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at St. Joseph
Catholic Church, located at 215 W. 13th Street in Hays, with Fr. Curtis Carlson

Heart of America, a nonprofit local organization aimed at advancing the economy of Ellis County, plans to develop Phase 4 of the Tallgrass 2nd Addition project in Hays northeast 22nd Street and Wheatland Avenue.

The developer is requesting a reinvestment housing incentive district (RHID) be established on the property. The city would finance and construct infrastructure related to the project and utilize RHID revenues to offset the city’s costs.

It would be directly north of Tallgrass Addition Phases 1-3 for which a separate RHID already exists.&nbsp;

"Heart of America is still working on the numbers, but this would be significantly larger than what they've done before," said Jarrod Kuckelman, Hays management analyst. "Phase 4 is projected to have about 100 new lots."

City commissioners will hear the housing plan during their work session on Thursday afternoon.

Also on the <a href="https://haysusa.com/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_11212024-1512">Nov. 21 agenda</a> is a presentation of the proposed 2025 street maintenance program by Jess Rohr, public works director.

The $1.1 million plan presented includes seal coat, polypatch, major rehab (street and concrete alley), pavement markings, curb and brick repair, sidewalk rebate program, and in-house crack seal and asphalt/concrete repair.

Staff will solicit bids for the recommended work for final commission approval early next year.&nbsp;

The work session begins at 4 p.m. in Hays City Hall, 1507 Main.

On Tuesday, a committee explored the possibility of developing a new performance stage in downtown Hays.

Imagine Ellis County is a strategic group focused on fostering regional community growth, with plans to achieve this through a stage at Hays Municipal Park.

Emily Knowles, designer and event coordinator, said the performance stage is a key element of more extensive plans for a community-centered entertainment district.

"Imagine a vibrant hub where culture, art and entertainment converge, creating a dynamic space that caters to every interest and passion," she said.

The group proposed a permanent stage to host musical performances, outdoor movie screenings, presentations, ceremonies, weddings and other community events.

The proposed stage dimensions include a height of five feet off the ground, a span of 75 feet between the pillars, 52 feet from the back wall to the front edge of the arc, 29 feet from the ground to the inner point peak and a back wall measuring 13.4 feet high.

Knowles is also a member of the Wild West Festival and Oktoberfest committees. The group referenced these annual events while discussing the stage's design and future events.

One concern raised was the stage's orientation and its exposure to direct sunlight, which could affect both performers and the audience. The proposed stage at Municipal Park would face southwest.

An alternative suggestion was reorienting the stage to face east, which was proposed in the beginning designs years ago and did not pan out.

"The problem with putting its back towards Main Street is it cuts everything off, and you're projecting into the corner, so you have no room for growth," Knowles said.

The group discussed relocating the nearby tennis courts to repurpose the space for food trucks during festivals. They also discussed the possibility of incorporating the tennis courts into an indoor arena on the east side of Larks Park.

Group members discussed seeking grants to fund the project, conducting feasibility studies and securing support from the city of Hays. There are no estimated costs yet.

The next meeting is set for at 1 p.m. Dec. 11 at Brief Space,&nbsp;219 W 10th St.

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas hosted its annual awards luncheon in Hays on October 22nd. Awards were given throughout the afternoon to staff, persons served, and community members. The first awards of the afternoon were given to employees of DSNWK for their years of service. Those staff recognized and listed by location, were:

This award was given from the Jerelyn Becker Memorial Scholarship Fund for employees studying in higher education in a field related to serving people with developmental disabilities.

DSNWK presented two Individual Achievement Awards to individuals served by DSNWK. Megan Aita of WaKeeney and Eric Mickelson of Hays were presented these awards which go each year to one youth and one adult who have shown tremendous individual progress throughout the year.

Awards were presented to members of area communities during the afternoon. White’s Foodliner in Phillipsburg received DSNWK's Employer of the Year Award for their outstanding support of people with disabilities in the workforce. The Community Support Award was presented to A-1 Plank and Scaffold of Hays for their support of DSNWK’s Employment Connections. Posthumous recognition was made to Pastor Timm Meyer of Norton with DSNWK’s Good Neighbor Award. Meyer spent many years volunteering his time and providing ministry to the individuals served by DSNWK in Norton.

Finally, DSNWK recognized two long-time advocates of DSNWK for their support with its Vision of Hope Awards. Andy and Paula Beck of Hays and the Al and Barbara Rietcheck Family formerly of Seguin were honored. DSNWK paid tribute to them for their outstanding support over the years for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

DSNWK is a 501c3 nonprofit serving 18 counties in northwest Kansas with a mission to advocate for persons with disabilities and those who care about them by planning and supporting a life of dignity, interdependence, and personal satisfaction in the community.

DSNWK celebrates successes at Awards Luncheon

The 2024 Colby Community College Hall of Fame class has been announced and includes softball All-American Lynnette Bohannon, basketball star Curtis Gates, supporters Kenton and Sheila Krehbiel, and former administrator and coach Dr. Gary Schultz.

A reception will be held in their honor beginning at about 5:45 p.m. at the conclusion of the men's basketball game on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Colby Event Center. A brief ceremony is also scheduled at halftime of the men's game.

The CCC Alumni Hall of Fame was established in 2012. In June each year, a committee selects individuals or couples who have contributed substantially to the college through personal time, effort and interest, or have contributed significantly to the lives of others after being part of Colby Community College. Previous inductees are listed at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.colbycc.edu/alumni/hall-of-fame/index.html">www.colbycc.edu/hof</a>.

Born and raised in Pueblo, Colo., the late Lynnette “Bo” Bohannon graduated from Pueblo County High School in 1998 after lettering four years in softball. She continued to shine in her time as a Trojan from 1998 to 2000, when she set several season and career school records, many of which still stand today. She capped her sophomore campaign in 2000 by being named to the&nbsp;Jayhawk Conference, Region VI, and All-America teams.

Bohannon is Colby’s single-season record-holder for hits (99), RBIs (80), and total bases (206). Her eight triples in a season and 13 over a career still rank first. For several years, her batting average (.455), hits (155), RBIs (105), and runs (100) were the highest marks posted over two seasons.

Upon receiving her associate degree from CCC, she continued her academic and athletic journey in New York at the University at Albany, SUNY. She played softball for the Great Danes for two years while majoring in Spanish and minoring in French.

Bohannon’s adventurous spirit led her to a unique career path after her time in Albany. She obtained her commercial driver’s license (CDL) and worked as an over-the-road truck driver for several years. Her love for travel took her across the country, allowing her to explore new places. During this time, she lived in various cities in Virginia, including Hampton, Norfolk, and Newport News.

After several years on the road, she returned home to Pueblo to be closer to her family. During this time, she pursued a new passion: sign language interpretation. She enrolled at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs and, in 2015, earned her degree and began working as an interpreter. This role allowed her to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

While Lynnette was deeply involved in her career as an interpreter, she remained connected to her family's excavating business and worked part-time alongside her father, Wick.

In 2020, Lynnette's journey took another meaningful turn as she became a Reiki master. Drawn to holistic healing and the opportunity to help others on a deeper level, she began practicing Reiki at the Pueblo Holistic Wellness Center.

Tragically, Lynnette's vibrant life was cut short when she lost a yearlong battle with cancer on June 5, 2023, at the age of 43. Despite her immense challenges, Lynnette continued approaching life with the same courage, kindness, and sense of humor that had defined her. She will be remembered for her ability to uplift others, unwavering work ethic, and&nbsp;infectious laughter.

&nbsp;Remembered as one of the greatest to don a Trojans basketball uniform, Curtis Gates captivated fans with his high-flying dunks and scoring ability. Gates, who tragically lost his life in 2001, left an indelible mark on the court that still resonates today.

Known to his friends as “Pearly” Gates for his flashy moves, Gates averaged 39 points a game his senior year at Wells High School in Chicago before joining the Trojans in 1983 under Coach Jack Renkens.

During his freshman campaign, the 6-foot 2 inch, 196-pound Gates put his name atop the Colby record book. In addition to pouring in 808 points that year, he established single-season marks for points in a game with 45 against McCook, most field goals (310), free throws made (188), free throws attempted (275), and dunks (73).

As a sophomore, Gates reset the standard with 81 dunks and broke his single-game record with 46 points against Highland College. He positioned himself to also hold the second spot for points in a season with 721. As a team, the Trojans thrived, finishing with a 28-5 record while averaging 82 points per game.

 </figure>Born and raised in Pueblo, Colo., the late Lynnette “Bo” Bohannon graduated from Pueblo County High School in 1998 after lettering four years in softball. She continued to shine in her time as a Trojan from 1998 to 2000, when she set several season and career school records, many of which still stand today. She capped her sophomore campaign in 2000 by being named to the&nbsp;Jayhawk Conference, Region VI, and All-America teams.Bohannon is Colby’s single-season record-holder for hits (99), RBIs (80), and total bases (206). Her eight triples in a season and 13 over a career still rank first. For several years, her batting average (.455), hits (155), RBIs (105), and runs (100) were the highest marks posted over two seasons.Upon receiving her associate degree from CCC, she continued her academic and athletic journey in New York at the University at Albany, SUNY. She played softball for the Great Danes for two years while majoring in Spanish and minoring in French.Bohannon’s adventurous spirit led her to a unique career path after her time in Albany. She obtained her commercial driver’s license (CDL) and worked as an over-the-road truck driver for several years. Her love for travel took her across the country, allowing her to explore new places. During this time, she lived in various cities in Virginia, including Hampton, Norfolk, and Newport News.After several years on the road, she returned home to Pueblo to be closer to her family. During this time, she pursued a new passion: sign language interpretation. She enrolled at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs and, in 2015, earned her degree and began working as an interpreter. This role allowed her to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.While Lynnette was deeply involved in her career as an interpreter, she remained connected to her family's excavating business and worked part-time alongside her father, Wick.In 2020, Lynnette's journey took another meaningful turn as she became a Reiki master. Drawn to holistic healing and the opportunity to help others on a deeper level, she began practicing Reiki at the Pueblo Holistic Wellness Center.Tragically, Lynnette's vibrant life was cut short when she lost a yearlong battle with cancer on June 5, 2023, at the age of 43. Despite her immense challenges, Lynnette continued approaching life with the same courage, kindness, and sense of humor that had defined her. She will be remembered for her ability to uplift others, unwavering work ethic, and&nbsp;infectious laughter.Curtis Gates<figure>

 </figure>&nbsp;Remembered as one of the greatest to don a Trojans basketball uniform, Curtis Gates captivated fans with his high-flying dunks and scoring ability. Gates, who tragically lost his life in 2001, left an indelible mark on the court that still resonates today.Known to his friends as “Pearly” Gates for his flashy moves, Gates averaged 39 points a game his senior year at Wells High School in Chicago before joining the Trojans in 1983 under Coach Jack Renkens.During his freshman campaign, the 6-foot 2 inch, 196-pound Gates put his name atop the Colby record book. In addition to pouring in 808 points that year, he established single-season marks for points in a game with 45 against McCook, most field goals (310), free throws made (188), free throws attempted (275), and dunks (73).As a sophomore, Gates reset the standard with 81 dunks and broke his single-game record with 46 points against Highland College. He positioned himself to also hold the second spot for points in a season with 721. As a team, the Trojans thrived, finishing with a 28-5 record while averaging 82 points per game.Gates remains Colby’s career-scoring leader with 1,529 points, 465 more than the next player on the list.&nbsp;&nbsp;The prowess of a player at a small northwest Kansas school drew the attention of recruiters across the country. Coach Renkens told the Salina Journal in a Feb. 3, 1985 interview that "more than 50" major college coaches inquired about Gates. After earning his associate degree at Colby, Gates accepted a full-ride scholarship to the University of Central Florida.Following college, Gates returned to Chicago to care for his family and work at Federal Express. In 1994, he was in the spotlight again when he starred in the critically acclaimed documentary Hoop Dreams, which followed the aspirations of his younger brother, William Gates, and fellow Chicagoan Arthur Agee as they chased their dreams of playing professional basketball.Curtis’s life was cut short when he was shot to death on September 10, 2001, at the age of 36. Despite his untimely passing, his legacy continues.He is survived by his wife, Beatrice, their three children—Sparkiesha, Curtis Jr., and Jamese—and six grandchildren.Kenton and Sheila Krehbiel<figure>

 </figure>Throughout their lives, the Krehbiels were driven by a desire to serve, lead, and help those around them. Kenton and Sheila (Nonamaker) Krehbiel both attended Brown-Mackie School of Business in Salina, where they began a lifelong partnership, first as students, then as professionals, and later as pillars of their community.After getting married, Kenton and Sheila were employed at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City. In 1973, they moved to Colby to operate Murphy’s Cafe. Their first interaction with Colby Community College came in 1974 when they purchased an advertisement in the college yearbook, an event that brought the cheerleaders to the cafe for a memorable photograph.Recipients of the 2004 Colby Community College Honorary Associate Degree in recognition of their service to Northwest Kansas, Kenton and Sheila have impacted the college in multiple ways over five decades. To encourage students’ musical growth, they established the Krehbiel Family Instrumental Band Scholarship in 2014. The couple were foster parents for the men's and women’s basketball teams, forming deep and lasting relationships with student-athletes. Kenton held a position on the Endowment Foundation board before being elected to the CCC Board of Trustees in 1989, where he served until his passing on Nov. 4, 2020. During his tenure, he was essential in hiring three college presidents and expanding the institution’s facilities and services.Sheila worked for the Prairie Drummer newspaper for three years and later dedicated 35 years to Sunflower Bank, becoming a familiar and trusted face in the Colby business world. Kenton found his niche in public service, working at the Colby Super Market before beginning a long career with the U.S. Postal Service in 1978. In 1997, he was appointed postmaster of Goodland. He assumed the Colby postmaster role in 2004 and held it through his retirement in 2012.The Krehbiels’ community contributions extended well beyond their professional careers. They were active members of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Celebration Community Church. For 14 years, they were leaders for the Tumbleweed 4-H Club, fostering a spirit of leadership and service among the youth. Kenton joined the Kiwanis Club in 1974 and held numerous local and state positions. His dedication to the organization was evident in his leadership of various committees, including the Thomas County Junior Miss pageant and the Kiwanis pancake feed, where he became known for making pancakes from scratch using a recipe from Sheila’s mother. His vision and passion were instrumental in growing the Pete Henry Foundation to its current level of success.Sheila, too, made her mark through involvement with the Genesis-Thomas County Food Pantry, where she has been a board member for 24 years. She has volunteered in the office at Heartland Christian School for three years. In 1990, she helped organize the Prairie Rose Harmony ladies' barbershop chorus, and she remains the only charter member still active, serving as treasurer for over three decades.Kenton and Sheila raised two daughters, CCC alumnae Sharon and Brenda, who, along with their families, have carried forward their parents' values of service and community. Sharon, with her husband Mike Hansen, resides in Kansas City, Mo., while Brenda and her husband, Adam Inman, live in Manhattan. Kenton and Sheila took great pride in their five grandchildren: Jacob and Caleb Hansen, and Avery, Brady, and Colby Inman.The Krehbiels embraced the opportunity to travel, not just for leisure but to expand their worldview and enrich their family’s experiences. They attended 14 international Kiwanis conventions, opting to drive across the U.S. rather than fly. As a result, they visited 48 states, explored 38 state capitals, and ventured into Mexico and across Canada.The family legacy continues to grow. In memory of Kenton, the Kiwanis Club of Thomas County/Colby launched a campaign in 2023 to fundraise for the Kenton Krehbiel Inclusive Playground at Villa High Park in Colby. The plan is to renovate the park equipment to make it accessible for all children.Dr. Gary Schultz<figure>

 </figure>Upon his arrival in 1972, Gary Schultz began a 24-year tenure at CCC that touched many people as a track and cross-country coach and administrator.Before his roles at Colby, his resume included teaching and coaching, and he led Bucklin and Phillipsburg high schools to their first-ever cross-country state championships. His Colby teams had several firsts, including the first track win at the Air Force Academy. He also introduced and coached CCC’s first women’s track program in 1974. Forty-eight school records were broken during his tenure, mainly with athletes he recruited from Western Kansas.In addition to his coaching achievements, Schultz’s work as the financial aid director and dean of students helped elevate CCC until his retirement in 1996. Under his leadership, the college achieved record enrollment, and he oversaw multiple successful accreditation reaffirmations. He presented at several state and national conferences and was a consultant for the North Central Association when he visited several community colleges to assist with the accreditation process.While president of the Rocky Mountain Financial Aid Administrators, Schultz was a key figure in creating a week-long summer training program for financial aid staff across the U.S. He also was president of the Executive Committee of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and was employed by the U.S. Department of Education to train financial aid professionals.Schultz was active in Colby's community. He served as president of the Kiwanis Club and Phi Delta Kappa, which presented him with the Outstanding Educator Award. He also took on leadership roles in the Colby Ambassadors and Colby United Methodist Church.He and his wife, Ronita, have three children: Brad, a sales and management professional; Mark, a Christian music artist and 2021 CCC Hall of Fame inductee; and Susan, a landscape architect. They are proud grandparents to 11 grandchildren.&nbsp;After leaving Northwest Kansas, the Schultzes moved to Liberty, Mo., where Gary was vice president of Target Marketing and a graduate school instructor for Baker University.&nbsp;&nbsp;Following his work with Target, they moved back to Kansas, where they reside in Overland Park.In retirement, he still rides his bicycle approximately 40 miles a week. He has completed the Bike Across Kansas ten times, the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) five times, and the Bike Tour of Colorado.&nbsp;&nbsp;He also spends considerable time on the golf course, plus serving as an election supervisor in every election.Schultz earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Fort Hays State University and a Doctor of Education from Kansas State University. With multiple degrees and various positions throughout his career, the title that still brings him the most pride is "Coach.""When someone calls me 'Coach,' I usually thank them," he said. "It’s a great title."
