A second doctor has sued HaysMed, arguing the noncompete clause in his contract is too restrictive.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/b34af9aa-1485-42c1-a272-afe7c74a36fb">He joins Dr. Jerod Grove, a general surgeon, who has also resigned from the hospital and sued the hospital to prevent the medical center from enforcing a noncompete clause in his contract.</a>

Rodriguez, who grew up in Goodland, expressed in the lawsuit a desire to continue to live and practice in western Kansas. Both Grove and Rodriguez's contracts would prevent the doctors from practicing within a 110-mile radius of Hays, which encompasses about 80% of western Kansas.

Both physicians have cited issues with the hospital administration and concerns about the quality of care at the medical center.

Rodriguez's lawsuit cited specific issues with care, including long wait times for crucial testing and treatment of cancer patients.

It has been taking up to six weeks to get insurance prior authorization to initiate chemotherapy, three weeks to get CTs and three to four weeks to obtain PET scans and MRIs, the lawsuit said.

"These delays had never been the case at Hays Med before, and it is&nbsp;definitely not the standard of care at our larger institutions in Kansas," the lawsuit said. "Delays in obtaining tests or starting treatment can have a negative&nbsp;impact on patient outcomes."

Rodriguez said in his lawsuit his employment was "unbearable," forcing him to resign from his position.

The lawsuit says HaysMed has been unable to maintain physicians, specifically within the cancer center.

He was hired in July 2015 with&nbsp;plans to expand the practice to four doctors. However, those plans rapidly changed when both of his longtime partners left the facility within six months of his starting, the lawsuit said.

The other hematologist/oncologist left after 15 years of service at HaysMed because of direct conflicts with the administration, the lawsuit said.&nbsp;She uprooted her entire family and moved back to the Kansas City metro area primarily because she was unable to work locally, the lawsuit said.

HaysMed was unable to recruit physicians, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit said Rodriguez used his personal contacts and reputation to recruit and successfully sign doctors to work in oncology at the hospital.

Rodriguez's colleagues Dr. Anthony Accurso and&nbsp;Dr. Matthew Mallory both left Hays Med because of direct&nbsp;conflicts with the administration, the lawsuit alleges.

The lawsuit says traveling physicians could not fill the vacuum left by the two doctors.

Rodriguez says in the suit that for three weeks, he was the only oncologist working in a practice normally staffed by three or four doctors.

Rodriguez claims in the suit he was so overwhelmed by the workload that he was evaluated in the emergency room for a possible heart attack. He was diagnosed with an ulcer that he attributed to stress.&nbsp;

Rodriguez is one of only three oncologists in western Kansas.&nbsp;

According to the lawsuit, he covers about 5,000 patients through his practice.

According to Grove's lawsuit, HaysMed has lost 12 physicians, two certified registered nurse anesthetists, and three midlevel providers. None of these have remained in the region and provide services to the residents of the state's western half.

Services impacts include cardiology, urology, orthopedics, OB/GYN, hospitalists, oncology, nephrology and general family medicine, the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit alleges HaysMed is using its noncompete clauses to try to maintain a monopoly in health care in western Kansas.

The American Medical Association’s Council on Ethics and Judicial&nbsp;Affairs discourages noncompete agreements in physicians’ employment&nbsp;contracts because they can potentially negatively affect patient care, the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit argues barring Rodriguez from practicing in western Kansas will result in patients waiting much longer or traveling longer distances for care, which could both result in adverse health outcomes, including death.

The lawsuit says HaysMed's attempt to maintain a monopoly could increase patients' insurance costs by giving HaysMed a better bargaining position with insurance companies.

The lawsuit also alleges HaysMed administrators may be using noncompete clauses in contracts to better position the hospital in the case of a potential sale.

"Upon information and belief, Hays Med has, for various reasons, been&nbsp;exploring the possibility of entering into either a sale, merger or other&nbsp;business relationship with another hospital system as it has been&nbsp;operating with negative returns for a number of years. In order to get the best price possible, upon information and belief," the lawsuit said.

"HaysMed is attempting to retain its providers, including physicians, nurses and other staff, in order to ensure it retains a larger value in the instance of a sale or re-negotiation of its insurance payment rates," the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit argues HaysMed would not be harmed if Rodriguez was allowed to continue practicing medicine in western Kansas. HaysMed is aware of Dr. Rodriguez’s resignation and has 90 days to find a suitable substitute. 

"This&nbsp;is ample time to mitigate their damages, and it is their responsibility to&nbsp;ensure continuity of care at their hospital as they have reasonable notice of &nbsp;Rodriguez's&nbsp;departure," the lawsuit said.

Rodriguez states in his lawsuit he has been unable to negotiate with another hospital in western Kansas because HaysMed has stated it will enforce his noncompete clause.

Grove signed a contract with Greeley County Hospital. <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/ac65c186-e3de-4a74-af00-f681eacbcca2">HaysMed has countersued both Grove and Greeley County Hospital to stop Grove from practicing at the hospital in Greeley County.</a>

Rodriguez has requested an injunction allowing him to continue to practice in western Kansas and is seeking unspecified damages to be determined at trial.

HaysMed issued a statement on Rodriguez's lawsuit Wednesday afternoon.&nbsp;

"We are aware of Dr. Rodriguez’s complaint and are currently reviewing the details. We do not agree with the allegations presented and intend to address this matter through the proper legal channels, " the statement said.

"Noncompete agreements are standard practice in health care and provide assurance to our patients that the hospital and its clinics have the medical staff and expertise to provide for their oftentimes complex medical needs.

"HaysMed remains dedicated to providing specialty care for the residents of Hays and the region, just as we have for many decades," the statement said.

Second doctor sues HaysMed over noncompete clause in contract

In 2019, the city of Hays purchased a 90-acre tract of greenfield property immediately northeast of Interstate 70, Exit 161, for development opportunities.

During Thursday's work session, city commissioners will hear a proposed award for engineering services for water/sewer main extensions under I-70, abutting street/intersection improvements and internal infrastructure improvements in that acreage.

The low bid is from&nbsp;Kaw Valley Engineering, Salina, for $118,750.

In 2022, the city hired RDG Planning and Design to conduct a market analysis and conceptual rendering of the property. It includes commercial, office and residential development, along with walking trails, public art and open space.

There is no specific development plan at this time, said Jarrod Kuckelman, Hays management analyst.

"There was a concept feasibility study put together of the acreage and what could fit out there on that property. It highlighted the goals of what the commissioners would like the property utilized for," Kuckelman said.

"That study is frequently shared with developers who are looking for a spot in Hays."

Two other bid recommendations will be heard Thursday.

Jeff Boyle, parks director, will discuss the east multi-use connector paths. It will provide the necessary links between the existing path, which ends at 22nd Street just south of HaysMed, and the new path, which will connect 41st Street and Hall to the Sternberg Museum.

The total low bid for both connector paths is $231,616 from T&amp;T Builders, Hays.&nbsp;Once all these new paths are constructed, there will be about five miles of multi-use path connecting the north and east sides of town.

Jeff Crispin, director of water resources, will discuss the demolition of obsolete structures at the water reclamation and reuse facility, 755 General Custer Road.

Three clarifiers were abandoned when the facility was upgraded between 2017 and 2019 to meet the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's new permit requirements.&nbsp;

One clarifier will be kept, although its metal components will be removed. It will be used if contaminated wastewater needs to be temporarily separated.

A single bid of $191,550 was submitted by M&amp;D, Hays, and is below the budget of $200,000. 

Boyle and Roger Bixenman, Hays Recreation Commission superintendent, will discuss the 2024 financial report and attendance at the pools and the sports complex.

This year, the recreation commission's total operating loss at the Hays Aquatic Park and Wilson Pool was $50,895. An agreement between the city and HRC splits the loss between the two entities, with each paying $25,447.

Attendance at the Hays Aquatic Park increased in 2024, with 46,004 patrons visiting the pool compared to 43,204 in 2023. Wilson Pool visitation decreased to 2,653 in 2024 compared to 2,903 in 2023.&nbsp;

The Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex neted a profit of $39,883 for the rec commission in 2024.

🎧 Defend the Fort Podcast: Tiger Talk (December 4, 2024)

Christopher Dean Rorabaugh, age 72 of Ellis, Kansas
passed away December 2, 2024. He was born on November 13, 1952, in Seneca,
Kansas, to Roscoe Dean "R.D." and Helena "Mija" (Moden)
Rorabaugh. Chris graduated from Ellis High School in 1970 and then Fort Hays
State University. On April 17, 1970, he married Rebecca Sue (Hurt) at the
United Methodist Church in Ellis.



He was a dedicated husband, father, educator, and coach. As a devoted husband
of 54 years and a loving father, he found immense joy and purpose in his
family. His unwavering commitment to creating cherished memories and nurturing
a life filled with love and laughter will always be remembered and treasured by
those who knew him best. 

He
was deeply committed to his students, always striving to inspire and guide them
toward their full potential. His passion for teaching and coaching extended
beyond the classroom and field as he worked tirelessly to make a positive
impact on the lives of everyone he encountered.

 

Chris's teaching and coaching career started in Utica, Kansas in 1975 where he
coached boys’ basketball, football as well as track and field. After leaving
Utica, Chris continued teaching and coaching in Bushton, Chetopa, and Copeland
where he held the position of being the High School Principal and coached
before returning to his beloved hometown of Ellis in 1990.



Chris was with the Ellis school district for 23 years. During his tenure at
Ellis, he was a respected and successful coach at the Junior and Senior High
levels, known for guiding his teams to multiple victorious seasons and leaving
a lasting impact on sports. 

He
was selected as the KSHSAA Track and Field Coach of the Year twice,
representing the great success the Ellis Track Program had under his tenure.
Chris was also an accomplished High School Basketball coach taking 2 of the
Ellis teams to state. In 2006 Chris was honored to receive recognition from the
Kansas Basketball Coaches Association for accumulating 350 wins, an
accomplishment Chris was very proud of along with his 30 years of service with
the KBCA. Chris was also honored to be inducted into the Ellis Teachers Hall of
Fame in 2007.



Retirement was not really retirement for Chris. In 2009 he returned to coaching
at various area schools and began refereeing.&nbsp; His passion for coaching
and refereeing became his purpose in life. 

Chris
also worked for the City of Hays Public Works Division as a Code Enforcement
Officer.&nbsp; He has held this position for the last 15 years. 



Chris is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Sue (Hurt) Rorabaugh of Ellis;
&nbsp;He took immense pride in his family, which includes his son, Dustin
Rorabaugh of Hays, KS and children, Taden, Lakyn, Jaxon, and Ava and their
mother Angie Zimmerman; his daughters, Rachel Hartman and husband Jeff of
Shawnee, KS, along with their children, Whitney, Ben, and Jacob; Jessica Rhoden
and husband Jeff of Hays, KS and her children, Candace, Brandon (and wife
Christen, and their daughter Eloise), Brittany, and Carter; and Robbi Nartey
and husband Chris of Edmond, OK, with children Josslyn and Jaden; Chris's
brothers, Steve Rorabaugh and wife Jan of Loveland, CO, Kevin Rorabaugh and
wife Lyndel of Ellis, KS and David Rorabaugh and wife Melissa of Hays, KS; as
well as Chris’ furbabies, Salt, Pepper, and Myah. 



Preceding him in death were his parents, R.D. “Rocky” and Mija Rorabaugh, and
his beloved furbaby, Wilbur "Willie".



Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, December 7, 2024 at Celebration
Community Church 5790 230th Ave Hays, KS 67601. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope
Cemetery in Ellis, Kansas.

around him, establishing him as a beloved figure in the communities he served.
A devoted educator, a passionate coach, and a well-respected referee, Chris
lived a life defined by his unwavering commitment to his family and dedication
to teaching, mentoring, and inspiring generations of students and athletes.

 </figure>Christopher Dean Rorabaugh, age 72 of Ellis, Kansas
passed away December 2, 2024. He was born on November 13, 1952, in Seneca,
Kansas, to Roscoe Dean "R.D." and Helena "Mija" (Moden)
Rorabaugh. Chris graduated from Ellis High School in 1970 and then Fort Hays
State University. On April 17, 1970, he married Rebecca Sue (Hurt) at the
United Methodist Church in Ellis.

He was a dedicated husband, father, educator, and coach. As a devoted husband
of 54 years and a loving father, he found immense joy and purpose in his
family. His unwavering commitment to creating cherished memories and nurturing
a life filled with love and laughter will always be remembered and treasured by
those who knew him best. He
was deeply committed to his students, always striving to inspire and guide them
toward their full potential. His passion for teaching and coaching extended
beyond the classroom and field as he worked tirelessly to make a positive
impact on the lives of everyone he encountered. 

Chris's teaching and coaching career started in Utica, Kansas in 1975 where he
coached boys’ basketball, football as well as track and field. After leaving
Utica, Chris continued teaching and coaching in Bushton, Chetopa, and Copeland
where he held the position of being the High School Principal and coached
before returning to his beloved hometown of Ellis in 1990.

Chris was with the Ellis school district for 23 years. During his tenure at
Ellis, he was a respected and successful coach at the Junior and Senior High
levels, known for guiding his teams to multiple victorious seasons and leaving
a lasting impact on sports. He
was selected as the KSHSAA Track and Field Coach of the Year twice,
representing the great success the Ellis Track Program had under his tenure.
Chris was also an accomplished High School Basketball coach taking 2 of the
Ellis teams to state. In 2006 Chris was honored to receive recognition from the
Kansas Basketball Coaches Association for accumulating 350 wins, an
accomplishment Chris was very proud of along with his 30 years of service with
the KBCA. Chris was also honored to be inducted into the Ellis Teachers Hall of
Fame in 2007.

Retirement was not really retirement for Chris. In 2009 he returned to coaching
at various area schools and began refereeing.&nbsp; His passion for coaching
and refereeing became his purpose in life. Chris
also worked for the City of Hays Public Works Division as a Code Enforcement
Officer.&nbsp; He has held this position for the last 15 years. 

Chris is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Sue (Hurt) Rorabaugh of Ellis;
&nbsp;He took immense pride in his family, which includes his son, Dustin
Rorabaugh of Hays, KS and children, Taden, Lakyn, Jaxon, and Ava and their
mother Angie Zimmerman; his daughters, Rachel Hartman and husband Jeff of
Shawnee, KS, along with their children, Whitney, Ben, and Jacob; Jessica Rhoden
and husband Jeff of Hays, KS and her children, Candace, Brandon (and wife
Christen, and their daughter Eloise), Brittany, and Carter; and Robbi Nartey
and husband Chris of Edmond, OK, with children Josslyn and Jaden; Chris's
brothers, Steve Rorabaugh and wife Jan of Loveland, CO, Kevin Rorabaugh and
wife Lyndel of Ellis, KS and David Rorabaugh and wife Melissa of Hays, KS; as
well as Chris’ furbabies, Salt, Pepper, and Myah. 

Preceding him in death were his parents, R.D. “Rocky” and Mija Rorabaugh, and
his beloved furbaby, Wilbur "Willie".

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, December 7, 2024 at Celebration
Community Church 5790 230th Ave Hays, KS 67601. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope
Cemetery in Ellis, Kansas.

Hays USD 489 celebrated the opening of the new Roosevelt Elementary School addition Monday night.

The addition and renovation is the first project completed under the $145 million bond issue.

Teachers worked on moving into the new space last week. Students' first day in the new addition was Monday.

"These new spaces will offer flexibility for new learning opportunities for students and staff that they've never had," Superintendent Ron Wilson said Monday night.

"While today we are celebrating the opening of a new and improved Roosevelt, we are also celebrating the beginning of something great that will occur across our district over the next two years as we continue to provide great learning space for all students and staff across our district," Wilson said, alluding to the other bond-funded projects that are in the works.

New classrooms were added to the Roosevelt to make it a four-section school, which means that it will be able to accommodate four classes of each grade, kindergarten through fifth.

Fourth- and fifth-grade students will occupy classrooms in the new addition, which also includes a gym and new library.

Previously, the school had one room used as a cafeteria, gym and auditorium, which made scheduling difficult.

A STEM teacher has been added at each elementary school. Roosevelt will now have a classroom dedicated to STEM classes.

The school board has approved the purchase of new furniture for the school, but it is on order.

Wilson thanked many people for supporting the bond issue and the construction project, including the school board, architects DLR Group and Nabholz Construction, the construction manager.

"We would also not be here today without the tremendous support of the Hays USD 489 parents," Wilson said. "... and the Hays community members who united and voted for this bond because they believed better school buildings were needed.&nbsp;

"But they also believed that better school buildings would help the Hays community thrive and survive for our future. New and improved schools will help us compete for families who will be making decisions about where they want to live and raise their families."

Wilson said new buildings do not do the work of educating students.&nbsp;

"But they no doubt will contribute to the positive experiences for our students and staff, and learning and fun will occur every day at Roosevelt for many, many years to come," he said.

Roosevelt Elementary School Principal Chris Sramek said Monday was an amazing day for the staff and students.

"Years of planning, hard work and collaboration have shown our community's commitment to education, to growth and to the potential of our students," she said.

"As our students walked through the doors this morning, I saw the sparkle in their eyes as they took in these new spaces," Sramek said. "That sparkle, the excitement, wonder and possibility reminds us all of why this project is so important."

The school is designed with the students in mind, she said.

"[It offers] spaces that inspire creativity, encourage collaboration and provide opportunities to grow in every way," Sramek said.

She said the building is its students' legacy.

"One thing you will always carry with you is this incredible memory of signing the beam that now stands as a permanent part of your school. Not many people can say they signed a piece of history—a beam that holds up walls and symbolizes the strength of this community,"&nbsp;Sramek said.

"Every time you walk through these halls, you will know that pride is literally built into the school," she said. "Students, this is for you. May this school inspire you to dream bigger, think deeper and always strive to do your best," she said.

"This investment is not just about today but about the future, about equipping our children with the tools they need to thrive in an ever-changing world. It is about creating a space where students feel valued, empowered and excited to learn. We are Roosevelt,"&nbsp;Sramek said.

&nbsp;Work is underway on the new Hays High School, which will be adjacent to the current Hays High on East 13th Street. That building is set to open in August.

The current high school will be converted into a middle school, and the middle school will be converted into an elementary school.

Lincoln Elementary School will close in May. <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/1cf1f167-3d2b-4a78-9fe7-240b64b595ae">The district is working on a contract to sell the Lincoln building to developer Michael Graham, who plans to renovate the building into apartments.</a>

The district also plans to close Wilson Elementary School. Upon the closure of the Rockwell Administration Center, Wilson will likely be used for administrative offices.

Hays USD celebrates opening of Roosevelt Elementary School addition

After three wins last week, the Fort Hays State women's basketball team again climbed in the latest release of both national polls, moving to No. 7 in the WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll and sliding up to a tie for No. 14 in the D2CSC National Media Poll released Tuesday.

Fort Hays State (7-0)&nbsp;leapt five spots in the coaches poll, earning 408 points in the balloting process after picking up 299 points one week ago. The Tigers are still the highest-ranked team from the MIAA, but FHSU is followed closely by No. 8 Pittsburg State and No. 9 Northwest Missouri State. Only one other league has three teams in the top 10, while the MIAA is the only conference with three teams in the top 17.

This is the seventh time in program history that the Tigers have been ranked No. 7 in the coaches poll. FHSU was last seventh in the final poll of the 2021-22 season. The Tigers are 10-0 all-time when ranked seventh in the country. The Tigers have been listed in 107 weekly releases of the WBCA Coaches Poll during their DII era.

This is the 69th time FHSU has been ranked in the top 10, and the first time the Tigers have cracked the top 10 since January 2, 2024. FHSU is 164-43 all-time when ranked, including a 113-24 record when ranked in the top 10.The Tigers moved up one spot in the media poll. FHSU is tied with Gannon with 202 points, while the two schools are just three points behind No. 13 Lee.

Fort Hays State returns to Gross Memorial Coliseum this weekend to open conference play on Thursday (Dec. 5) when they battle Central Missouri beginning at 5:30 p.m.

🏀 Hays High girls' ninth in KBCA preseason poll

A 42-year-old Hays man was sentenced last month to more than
two and a half years in prison for killing a man outside a Hays bar in June 2023. 

Keith Allen Ostrom was initially charged with voluntary
manslaughter in the death of 63-year-old Larry Braun outside the Horseshoe Bar
in Hays on June 25, 2023. 

Ostrom was sentenced Wednesday, Nov. 20, to 32 months in prison by
Ellis County District Court Judge Glenn Braun.

According to the Hays Police Department, in the early
morning hours of Sunday, June 26, 2023, 63-year-old Larry D. Braun was shot in
the neck following an incident at the Horseshoe Bar.

Braun died as a result of his wounds, and police arrested
Ostrom.

Court documents showed that Ostrom had claimed that the
shooting was in self-defense. He, at one point during the investigation, told
police that he believed Braun had a knife.

However, according to the initial police report, Ostrom did not tell
police on the scene about the knife.

Ellis County Attorney Robert Anderson said a witness to the
event that night, who was sober, told police that Braun did not have a knife, but during grand jury testimony, the witness said Braun did have a knife. 

Anderson said the questions about self-defense were the main
reason he presented the case to a grand jury.

On Aug. 9, 2023, the 15-member grand jury returned an
indictment charging Ostrom with voluntary manslaughter, criminal discharge of a
firearm, possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol and endangerment.

In October, Ostrom pleaded guilty to involuntary
manslaughter.

At sentencing, Ostrom’s attorney requested the judge
sentence him to probation instead of prison.

They cited his lack of criminal history, his age, and his
current medical condition—he has a kidney condition that requires several dialysis
treatments a week—as all reasons why the judge should sentence Ostrom to
probation instead of prison.

Braun denied the motion, saying that if you take a life in
Ellis County, there have to be consequences.

He sentenced Ostrom to 32 months in prison.

Hays man sentenced to prison in 2023 killing outside bar

Capuchin-Franciscan Brother Joseph McGlynn, 81, celebrated
cook for St. Fidelis Friary and the Capuchin Spiritual Life Center of Victoria,
Kansas for the past 17 years, died rather unexpectedly on Thursday, November
29, 2024 at the HaysMed in Hays, Kansas.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 3, 1943, Dennis
Gerald McGlynn was the son of John P. and Alice Sheila (McKendry) McGlynn. At
the age of 16, having attended Ascension Catholic Grade School for eight years
and Northeast Catholic High School for two years, he adopted the religious name
Joseph and began a year’s postulancy with the friars of the Capuchin Province
of Pennsylvania at the Capuchin Brothers Training Center at SS, Peter and
Paul’s Friary in Cumberland, Maryland.

The following year, he made his novitiate at St. Conrad
Friary in Annapolis, Maryland, and made first profession as a Capuchin lay
brother on August 22, 1961.

Br. Joseph engaged in two more years of religious formation
and trade schooling in Cumberland and another at St. Fidelis Friary in Herman,
Pennsylvania., and then made a lifelong commitment as a Capuchin brother on
August 22, 1964.

Joseph’s first 12 years as a solemnly professed friar were

In 1977, the Pennsylvania province was divided into two new
provinces at the Indiana-Illinois border, and the western half (Illinois,
Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado) was named the Province of Mid-America under the
patronage of St. Conrad of Parzham; and Br. Joseph opted to join it.

In this new province, he continued pursuing the traditional
domestic responsibilities of lay brothers. A 16-page illustrated typescript he
assembled in these years, entitled “Measuring, Cutting, and Sewing a Capuchin
Habit” was dedicated to Br. Thomas Thomasunas, “my mentor in tailoring and in
Capuchin life.”

But Joseph also became a pioneer in new callings for lay
brothers! He was Mid-America’s first lay friar to serve (for five years) as a
fraternity vicar, and then as the first to serve (for 10 years) as a guardian.
Both appointments required special indults from the Holy See. 

During these years, Joseph also became involved in the
earliest formation efforts of the Province. He directed the pre-postulancy
program 1979-86, and then the postulancy program 1986-95.

He was also a member of the chapter steering committees in
1986, 1998 and 2001, and in 1986 became the first lay member of the provincial
council, serving nine years as such. In 1992, the North American Capuchin
Conference made him one of its delegates to the first ever International
Capuchin Assembly addressing Capuchin identity and culture, which was held in
Lublin, Poland.

Later he was kitchen manager and studied alcohol and drug
counseling at Dismas House in St. Louis; was Catholic campus minister at
Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas; and spiritually assisted
Secular Franciscan fraternities in Overland Park, Kansas, and Victoria.

Brother returned in 2007 to Victoria, and as the late Fr.
Gilmary Tallman described it, to “his den, his nest, his grazing ground, his
realm in the kitchen,” eventually having served his brothers’ culinary
pleasures well over 39 years of his 69 years with them. He was a great cook,
one brother stressed, great variety and willing to try new ideas. 

&nbsp;In the kitchen,
Joseph also held court, listening and asking question. “Some people are problem
solvers,” Gilmary said. “He is a problem hearer. Some people give advice, he
gives attention.”

Fr. Earl Befort added, “Joe was always kind and concerned
about all the brothers. After Don Debes had his stroke, Joe took great care of
him. Every day when we said office, Joe would sit with him and show him where
and how to find the right prayers and do so most patiently. Joe will be deeply
missed.”

Joseph was predeceased by his parents, his brothers John,
Charles, Msgr. Daniel, and Robert, and his sister Sheila, and is survived by
his brother James, presently in hospice, sister Eileen McGarrity of
Jenkenstown, PA, and 
19 nephews and nieces and their 43 children and grandchildren. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Thursday,
December 5, 2024 at the Basilica of St. Fidelis in Victoria with Fr. James
Moster, OFMCap. and Fr. Curtis Carlson, OFMCap. officiating. &nbsp;Burial will
follow in the Friars’ Plot in St. Fidelis Cemetery. &nbsp;Visitation will be
from 6:00 pm until 8:00 on Wednesday, and from 9:00 am until service time on
Thursday, all at the Basilica. &nbsp;A vigil service and rosary will at 7:00 pm
on Wednesday at the Basilica. &nbsp;Memorials are suggested to the Capuchin

cook for St. Fidelis Friary and the Capuchin Spiritual Life Center of Victoria,
Kansas for the past 17 years, died rather unexpectedly on Thursday, November
29, 2024 at the HaysMed in Hays, Kansas.Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 3, 1943, Dennis
Gerald McGlynn was the son of John P. and Alice Sheila (McKendry) McGlynn. At
the age of 16, having attended Ascension Catholic Grade School for eight years
and Northeast Catholic High School for two years, he adopted the religious name
Joseph and began a year’s postulancy with the friars of the Capuchin Province
of Pennsylvania at the Capuchin Brothers Training Center at SS, Peter and
Paul’s Friary in Cumberland, Maryland.The following year, he made his novitiate at St. Conrad
Friary in Annapolis, Maryland, and made first profession as a Capuchin lay
brother on August 22, 1961.Br. Joseph engaged in two more years of religious formation
and trade schooling in Cumberland and another at St. Fidelis Friary in Herman,
Pennsylvania., and then made a lifelong commitment as a Capuchin brother on
August 22, 1964.Joseph’s first 12 years as a solemnly professed friar were

Capuchin-Franciscan Brother Joseph McGlynn

Donald C. 'Don' Hoover, 73, Hays, died Sunday, December 1,
2024 at Ellis Good Samaritan Society.

He was born February 9, 1951 in Hays, the son of Herbert C.
“Herb” and Wilma J. (Rupp) Hoover.&nbsp; Don
graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy in 1969, and in 1971 he earned an
Associate Degree in diesel mechanics from Northwest Kansas Vo-Tech in
Goodland.&nbsp; He was employed by Rupp’s Inc.,
Central Prairie Implement, Och’s Inc., and Carrico Implement.&nbsp; On December 30, 1969 he was united in
marriage to Jolene Smith in Hays, and they celebrated nearly 55 years of
marriage.&nbsp; His memberships included the
Schoenchen St. Anthony Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #4166 and the
Smoky Hill Pheasants Forever Chapter 424 where he enjoyed helping with the
annual banquets and youth hunts.&nbsp; Don was
a Kansas City Chiefs fan and he enjoyed traveling, watching MASH, motorcycle
rides on his Honda Gold Wing, and hunting dove, pheasant, and occasionally
quail.&nbsp; He was always happy to gather
with his buddies and prepared to tell many good jokes. 

Survivors include his wife Jolene of Hays, three daughters,
Alisa Caruthers, of Hays, Traci Hoover of Topeka, and Brenna Sherlock and
husband Bryon of Hays, a brother, Fred Hoover of Hays, five sisters, Mary Metz
and husband Bill of Berryton, Carol Neihardt and husband Nelson of Topeka,
Connie Sheldon of Hays, Sue Hoover of Hays, and Janet Kuhn and husband Ed of
Walker, and four grandchildren, Alex Caruthers of Hays, Taylor Daugherty of
Topeka, Mckenzi Hoover and fiancé Trent Nickleson of Pratt, and Kooper Sherlock
of Hays.
