HAYS - The Hays High girls and boys programs were both in the finals of the 42nd Annual Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout on Saturday. It was the first time since 2003 that both teams were the finals of their home tournament.

<b>GIRLS:&nbsp;#9 Hays 63 , Life Prep 56<br></b>Hays never trailed in their championship game against Life Prep winning 63 to 56. The Indians never trailed in their three tournament games.

Hays jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first five minutes of the game using a pair of 5-0 spurts wrapped around a three pointer from the Fire. Hays stretched their lead to seven twice before settling for a 16-10 lead at the end of one quarter.

Hays built on their lead in the second quarter until it reached 17 at halftime. The Indians used a 14-3 run midway through the quarter to take their first double digit lead.

Hays led by 17 once again at 38-21 with just over four minutes left in the third quarter when Life Prep made it a game again. The Fire rattled off 14 straight points closing the score down to 38-21. A 7-2 run to end the quarter pushed the lead back to eight at 45-37.

Hays never could completely pull away from Life Prep. The Fire had the ball down three twice in the fourth but could not get any closer.

Hays made each of their last six free throws in the final two minutes to win 63-56.

Jenna Schmeidler led the Indians with a game and career high 25. Katie Linenberger added 12 and Molly Martin 10. The Indians made 28 of 34 free throws.

<b>BOYS: Blue&nbsp; Valley Northwest 62, Hays 42<br></b>Blue Valley Northwest used a 20-2 second quarter run on their way to a 62-42 victory over the Hays High Indians to claim the championship of the Hays City Shootout.

The two teams traded blows for the first quarter. The game was tied four times over the first six minutes. Hays took their final lead at 12-11 with 1:35 left in the quarter. The Huskies outscored Hays 6-1 over the remainder of that time though and led 17-13 going to the second quarter.

Hays trailed by five at 23-18 when Northwest went on their 20-2 run. The blitz covered 3:50. A Carter Lang half court three beat the buzzer to make the score 43-23 at the break.

Hays scored the first four points of the fourth quarter but never got closer than the 16 point difference of 43-27.

Hays never threatened rest of the way in a 62-42 loss.

Dawson Ruder scored 12 points and Carter Lang added a career high 11.

🏀 Hays High girls claim Shootout title; boys runner-up

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball took its first conference loss of the season on Saturday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers fell to No. 3/4 ranked Washburn by a score of 71-57, moving to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. The Ichabods remained unbeaten on the season, now 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State led a few times in the early going, but Washburn used a 14-2 run to go up 10 and never gave the lead back from the 11:46 mark of the first half to the end of the game. The Ichabods shot 56 percent from the field in the first half and led by eight at halftime, 37-29. Brayden Shorter had the hot hand early for the Ichabods, scoring 16 of his game-high 26 in the opening half.

A Kaleb Hammeke 3-point field goal to open the second half got the margin down to five, but Washburn countered with a pair of baskets to get the lead back to nine. The closest the Tigers got the rest of the way was eight points two more times. The Tigers kept the Ichabods within a reachable margin all day, never allowing the lead to get bigger than 15, but just never found a run to make the Ichabods sweat down the stretch.

Kyle Grill&nbsp;led the Tigers in scoring with 16 points, followed by Hammeke with 12. They were the only Tigers to reach double figures in scoring. Dan Makuna&nbsp;pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and Hammeke led in assists with four.

Joining Shorter in double figures for the Ichabods was Michael Keagan (11), Jack Bachelor (11), and Andrew Orr (10). Shorter added a team-high seven rebounds to his 26 points and Bachelor led the Ichabods in assists with six.The Tigers turned the ball over a season-high 19 times, six more than their previous high. The Ichabods generated 12 steals in the game and outscored the Tigers 18-11 in points off turnovers. The Ichabods snapped FHSU's two-game run of defeating NABC Top 25 ranked opponents at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The No. 3 ranking matched the highest the Ichabods have ever held while facing the Tigers in the program's NCAA Division II era.

The Tigers go back into non-conference play for the next four games this month. They travel to William Jewell on Saturday (Dec. 14) before returning home for their final three contests of December.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 Tigers fall at home to No. 3 Ichabods

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs closed out the 2024 Hays
City Shootout with a 52-43 win over Newton, while the TMP boys fell to
Manhattan in the seventh-place game 64-40 on the final day of the Hays City
Shootout Saturday at Hays Middle School.

<b>GIRLS: TMP 52, Newton 43<br></b>The Monarchs (1-2) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to an
offensive rebound by Gracyn Schippers and a jumper by Shaylee Gottschalk.

Despite the early TMP lead, both teams started the game cold
offensively. TMP was just 1-for-8 to open the first quarter, and Newton (0-3)&nbsp; was 2
two-for-7

Newton built a 5-2 lead with just under two and a half
minutes to play in the first quarter.

Down three, TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman went to work, scoring
six straight points over the final minute of the first quarter, helping TMP
take an 8-5 lead into the second quarter.

TMP’s Teagan Gottschalk extended the Monarch's run to 8-0
with a steal on the first possession of the second quarter, putting TMP up
10-5.

The two teams traded field goals for much of the second

45-42 thanks to an 11-0 run.

Koenigsman's three-pointer quieted the run and helped the
Monarchs close the game on a 7-1 run to secure a 52-43 victory.

It was John Linn's first win as head coach of the Monarchs.

Brooke Koenigsman led nine Monarchs in scoring
with 20 points. Hannah Rose and Claire Schippers each added six points, and
Gracyn Schippers pulled down a game-high six rebounds.

The TMP boys could not overcome their opponent's quick start for the third game in as many days, losing to Manhattan 64-40 in the boys'
7th-place game Saturday morning.

Manhattan (1-2) connected on five of their first seven field
goal as they built a 12-0 lead over the game's first two minutes. 

TMP’s Ian Nehls scored back-to-back field goals off the bench, but the Indians extended their lead to 23-4 at the end of the fourth quarter.

Jacob Seib started the scoring in the second quarter for TMP (0-3) with a driving layup, and then Ty Schmeidler added a fastbreak layup, making
it 25-8 Manhattan.

In the second quarter, with just under two and a half
minutes left in the half, Nehls made it 34-15 Manhattan. That was as close as TMP would get in the first half, as Manhattan took a 40-15 lead into the break.

The Indians briefly led by 30 to open the second half before
the Monarchs scored nine straight, making it 45-24 Manhattan.

The Indians maintained the comfortable lead throughout the rest
of the second half on their way to a 64-40 victory.

Freshman Grant Nehls scored a career-high 18 points and added
six rebounds. Ty Schmeidler added nine points for TMP.

The Monarchs travel to Hill City Friday night to open
Mid-Continent League play.

it 25-8 Manhattan.</p><p>In the second quarter, with just under two and a half
minutes left in the half, Nehls made it 34-15 Manhattan. That was as close as TMP would get in the first half, as Manhattan took a 40-15 lead into the break.</p><p>The Indians briefly led by 30 to open the second half before
the Monarchs scored nine straight, making it 45-24 Manhattan.</p><p>The Indians maintained the comfortable lead throughout the rest

Georgine (Peters) Barber, 92, Hays, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday morning, December 6, 2024. She was a wonderful mixture of love, laughter and determination.

She was born to Alvis and Georgine (Rupp) Peters on March 18, 1932 in Hays, Kansas. She was the oldest of four children. She married Fred Barber, the love of her life on November 7, 1949 and together they raised three children and two grandchildren.

Georgine devoted her life to taking care of others. At an early age, she became responsible for three younger siblings and continued taking care of others throughout her life. She was a protective mother hen swooping in nieces and nephews and other children under her loving wings.

Georgine was one of the hardest working people you could meet. She always had a big garden and canned and froze everything she could get her hands on. She was famous for her cooking, especially the German dishes she prepared. She was a talented seamstress and quilt maker. There wasn’t much that she couldn’t do once she made up her mind.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, an infant daughter, Sophia, and one great grandchild, Brandon Rashada.

She is survived by three children, Frederick (Fran) of Trophy Club, Texas, Dr. Gloria Jones (David), of Wichita and Louise Smith-Klitzke (Jason) of Wilson Lake, and six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Her laughter and loving nature will be missed by many.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 7:00, with a vigil service at 6:00 pm, all on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A private family inurnment will be at a later date in Buchanan Cemetery, Graham County. Memorials are suggested to TMP Endowment. HAYS, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team notched its second-consecutive 30-point conference victory Saturday, defeating the Washburn Ichabods 83-53. The Tigers improve to 9-0 to start the season and 2-0 in MIAA play, while the Ichabods dip to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in league action.

The Tigers never trailed in the contest after scoring the first nine points of the afternoon. Washburn finally got on the board four minutes into the game, but 3-pointers from Kate Dilsaver and Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;helped the home team stretch its lead to 22-7 by the end of the first quarter.

The FHSU defense kept the pressure on in the second quarter, limiting the Ichabods to five points and a pair of field goals. The Tigers were equally as impressive on the offensive end, knocking down 11-of-22 from the floor in the frame en route to a 48-12 lead at halftime. Washburn's 12 points before halftime are tied for the fewest allowed in a half by the Tigers during the Talia Kahrs&nbsp;era.

After scoring 17 in a row to end the first half, the Tigers stretched their lead as high as 43 midway through the third quarter on an Avery Lowe&nbsp;free throw. The Ichabods started to chip away at the lead against the FHSU bench over the final 12 minutes, trimming the final margin to 30 points.

Fort Hays State put together another balanced offensive attack with five players scoring in double figures for the second game in a row. Three additional players scored at least five points while 10 different players found the scoresheet in all.

DeGarmo led the way with 14 points alongside three assists and three steals. Dilsaver added 12 points, all in the first half, while dishing out a team-high six assists and adding three steals. Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;totaled 11 points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks, with Brooke Loewe recording 11 points and three assists. Talexa Weeter&nbsp;notched 10 points, reaching double figures for a seventh-consecutive game.

The Tiger defense held Washburn to a shooting percentage of 32.8 percent (20-of-61), its lowest output of the year. The Ichabods turned the ball over 22 times leading to 21 Tiger points. FHSU scored 18 fast-break points in the win, its highest total against an NCAA DII team this season.

Fort Hays State knocked down 50.8 percent from the floor (33-of-65), the third time this season the Tigers have hit at least half of their shots in a game this year.

The Tigers will return to action in 12 days when they travel to Hawaii for the Big Island Holiday Classic December 19-20. FHSU will play Truman State on Thursday the 19th beginning at 8 p.m. CT (4 p.m. HT) before battling Quincy on Friday the 20th at 10 p.m. CT (6 p.m. HT). Fort Hays State will put its four-game win streak to the test on Saturday when it hosts No. 3/4 ranked Washburn at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. The Tigers enter at 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA, while the Ichabods are undefeated at 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA.

This will be the first of two meetings with Washburn this season. FHSU won the only meeting with Washburn last year by a score of 71-58 in Hays. This will be the fourth time in FHSU's NCAA Division II history it faces an NABC Top 25 ranked Washburn squad. FHSU has won one of the three previous meetings, which was when Washburn was ranked No. 3 and FHSU was ranked No. 1 back on November 17, 1996 at Gross Memorial Coliseum. FHSU won that contest 82-60. Washburn has won the last two meetings when it has been ranked in the NABC Top 25. The last time FHSU faced an NABC ranked Washburn team was in 2012-13 when the Ichabods squeaked out a 70-69 win in Hays as the No. 13 ranked team in the nation.

The Ichabods are ranked No. 4 in the latest D2CSC Media Poll. This will be the third time Washburn plays FHSU while holding a ranking in that poll. The teams have split the first two meetings.

Fort Hays State has won its last two meetings with NABC Top 25 ranked teams at Gross Memorial Coliseum. Both were last year in consecutive games when FHSU defeated No. 17 ranked Northwest Missouri State and No. 22 ranked Missouri Western. The Tigers have won 33 percent of their games against Top 5 NABC ranked teams with eight in 24 tries. The Tigers won their last game against a Top 5 team, a win at No. 5 ranked Central Oklahoma last season on New Year's Eve.

The Tigers are coming off a thrilling 70-67 double-overtime victory against Central Missouri on Thursday night. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;moved up to second on the all-time scoring list at FHSU, now with 1,649 in his career. He is just 117 shy of the record 1,766 held by Alonzo Goldston. Hammeke led the Tigers with 19 points, followed by Shaun Riley&nbsp;with 15, Dan Makuna&nbsp;with 12, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kyle-grill/8223">Kyle Grill</a>&nbsp;with 11.

Washburn won its MIAA opener on Thursday night at Nebraska-Kearney by a score of 87-52. Jack Bachelor led four Ichabods in double figures with 19 points. Jacob Hanna and Brayden Shorter lead five Ichabods who average double figures in scoring this season, both at 15.5 points per game.

Hammeke&nbsp;leads the Tigers in scoring at 15 points per game and assists at 4.5 per game. Riley&nbsp;is the top Tiger rebounder at 7.2 per game. The Tigers are shooting 79.1 percent at the free-throw line as a team which leads the MIAA. The Tigers rank second nationally in turnovers, averaging just 8.5 per game behind national leader Missouri S&amp;T at 8.2 per game.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. The Tigers enter at 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA, while the Ichabods are undefeated at 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA.</p><p>This will be the first of two meetings with Washburn this season. FHSU won the only meeting with Washburn last year by a score of 71-58 in Hays. This will be the fourth time in FHSU's NCAA Division II history it faces an NABC Top 25 ranked Washburn squad. FHSU has won one of the three previous meetings, which was when Washburn was ranked No. 3 and FHSU was ranked No. 1 back on November 17, 1996 at Gross Memorial Coliseum. FHSU won that contest 82-60. Washburn has won the last two meetings when it has been ranked in the NABC Top 25. The last time FHSU faced an NABC ranked Washburn team was in 2012-13 when the Ichabods squeaked out a 70-69 win in Hays as the No. 13 ranked team in the nation.</p><p>The Ichabods are ranked No. 4 in the latest D2CSC Media Poll. This will be the third time Washburn plays FHSU while holding a ranking in that poll. The teams have split the first two meetings.</p><p>Fort Hays State has won its last two meetings with NABC Top 25 ranked teams at Gross Memorial Coliseum. Both were last year in consecutive games when FHSU defeated No. 17 ranked Northwest Missouri State and No. 22 ranked Missouri Western. The Tigers have won 33 percent of their games against Top 5 NABC ranked teams with eight in 24 tries. The Tigers won their last game against a Top 5 team, a win at No. 5 ranked Central Oklahoma last season on New Year's Eve.</p><p>The Tigers are coming off a thrilling 70-67 double-overtime victory against Central Missouri on Thursday night. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;moved up to second on the all-time scoring list at FHSU, now with 1,649 in his career. He is just 117 shy of the record 1,766 held by Alonzo Goldston. Hammeke led the Tigers with 19 points, followed by Shaun Riley&nbsp;with 15, Dan Makuna&nbsp;with 12, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kyle-grill/8223">Kyle Grill</a>&nbsp;with 11.</p><p>Washburn won its MIAA opener on Thursday night at Nebraska-Kearney by a score of 87-52. Jack Bachelor led four Ichabods in double figures with 19 points. Jacob Hanna and Brayden Shorter lead five Ichabods who average double figures in scoring this season, both at 15.5 points per game.</p><p>Hammeke&nbsp;leads the Tigers in scoring at 15 points per game and assists at 4.5 per game. Riley&nbsp;is the top Tiger rebounder at 7.2 per game. The Tigers are shooting 79.1 percent at the free-throw line as a team which leads the MIAA. The Tigers rank second nationally in turnovers, averaging just 8.5 per game behind national leader Missouri S&amp;T at 8.2 per game.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team wraps up the first conference weekend of the season on Saturday when the Tigers host MIAA rival Washburn beginning at 2 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Fort Hays State is now 8-0 on the season, making this the fourth-best start in program history. The Tigers started the 2012-13 season and the 2015-16 campaign with 10-straight wins before setting the program record with 15-consecutive victories to begin the 2018-19 season. Fort Hays State is one of 14 remaining undefeated teams in Division II.

The Tigers now have 990 wins in the program's 52-year history, putting the team within 10 victories of reaching the 1,000-win plateau.

Olivia Hollenbeck notched her seventh career double-double in Thursday's blowout win over Central Missouri, totaling 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. She is the fourth different Tiger to record a double-double this season, joining Brooke Loewe, Katie DeGarmo and Telexa Weeter.

Ellie Stearns&nbsp;knocked down four 3-pointers in the win Thursday, doing so for a second-consecutive game. She leads the team with 11 makes from behind the arc this season.

The Tigers rank in the top 10 in the country in numerous statistical categories, including fourth in defensive rebounds per game (33.0), sixth in field goal percentage defense (30.8 percent), ninth in fouls per game (13.0) and ninth in assist/turnover ratio (1.28).Loewe leads the conference and ranks sixth in DII with 50 assists on the year, while her average of 6.3 assists per night is the best in the league and 10th in the country.

Hollenbeck continues to lead the team with 17.1 points per game, fourth-best in the MIAA. The Lincoln, Neb. graduate student is knocking down 67.1 percent of her shots this season, third-best in Division II.Weeter led the team in scoring for a second time this season on Thursday, totaling 21 points to score in double figures for a sixth-consecutive game.

The Ichabods lead the all-time series, 47-40, while the series is level at 21-21 in games played in Hays. Fort Hays State has won eight-straight overall dating back to February 2018, its longest winning streak in series history. Washburn's last win over the Tigers came in December of 2017. Fort Hays State has won 13 of the last 14 meetings over the last 10-plus seasons. The Tigers have also won eight in a row at home against the Ichabods, with WU's last road win coming in 2013. Fort Hays State is 1-0 overall and 1-0 at home against the Ichabods during the Talia Kahrs&nbsp;era.

The Tigers used a big second half to defeat Washburn by 25 last season (1/25/24), 70-45. FHSU outscored the Ichabods 40-17 in the second half while holding WU to its lowest scoring output of the season. FHSU scored 15-straight in the third quarter, its longest run of the season, while holding Washburn to just three points in that frame, the fewest allowed in any quarter last year. DeGarmo led the team with 16 points and 11 rebounds, good for her seventh double-double of the season.

DeGarmo has scored in double figures in all four of her games against the Ichabods, including one double-double. She averages 13.5 points and 7.3 rebounds when playing Washburn. Hollenbeck has scored in double figures twice against WU, averaging 9.8 points and 4.3 rebounds in four career matchups.

Washburn is 4-5 this season and 0-1 in conference play after dropping a narrow 66-61 contest in the MIAA opener Thursday at Nebraska-Kearney. Before that game the Ichabods had won four in a row after dropping their first four games of the year. The Ichabods lead the league and rank 23rd nationally with a field goal percentage of 46.0 while they rank 259th out of 290 DII teams with a field goal percentage defense of 43.7 percent. Payton Sterk (18.0 ppg) and Yiibari Nwidadah (17.4 ppg) rank T-second and fourth, respectively, in the MIAA in scoring.

Looking ahead, Fort Hays State will return to action in two weeks when the Tigers travel a mere 3,636 miles to play Truman State and Quincy in the Big Island Holiday Classic in Hilo, Hawaii December 19-20.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays City Commissioner Alaina Cunningham summed up the commission's consensus Thursday as they discussed engineering services for extending utilities for the development of city-owned property just northeast of Interstate 70 Exit 161.

"It's a long-term plan. We're not going to build this out tomorrow. ... It's looking for what we need in 10 and 20 years," she said.

"We are designing it to keep it as flexible as we can. ... At some point, we'll have to make some decisions," said Tom Howie, Hays project manager.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The city purchased the 93 acres, known as the Braun property, in 2019 for&nbsp;continued growth and development opportunities. Hays aims for a 1% population increase each year.

A 2023 feasibility study by RDG Planning and Design, Omaha, includes residential mixed housing, commercial business, offices, restaurants, hotels, walking trails, open space and public art.

City commissioners will consider awarding a $118,750 low bid from Kaw Valley Engineering, Salina, at their Dec. 12 meeting.

Hays has already been <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/fc8ac5a9-8e28-48ec-a7ab-6c3eeab9f02d">awarded $4 million in state funding for retail development</a> as part of the proposed project.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I'm very focused on retail development in this community, as are many," said Mayor Sandy Jacobs.

"I think we need to be looking at everything possible we can do to make ourselves attractive to people out there, and I know Grow Hays is working closely with a broker to find (it)."&nbsp;

City Manager Toby Dougherty said the project can be likened to when the city first extended utilities north from Vine Street under I-70 to the current thriving retail/business corridor.

"This is a long-term potential commercial corridor for us," Dougherty said, "not just the city's property but the other properties around it. The first significant step is getting utilities punched into there."

&nbsp;Commissioner Shaun Musil said many people wondered why the city bought the property.

"This shows that we're serious about development. ... We need retail. It's a priority," he said.

Musil also wants to see a new convention center built at that location "to bring events back to town. That helps everything."

Hays' general fund is primarily funded by the city's local sales tax.&nbsp;

In other business, Jeff Crispin, water resources director, discussed demolishing obsolete structures at the water reclamation and reuse facility, 755 General Custer Road.&nbsp;

Three clarifiers were abandoned when the facility was upgraded between 2017 and 2019 to meet the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's new permit requirements.&nbsp;

One clarifier will be kept, although its metal components will be removed. It will be used if highly contaminated wastewater needs to be temporarily separated.

A single bid of $191,550 was submitted by M&amp;D, Hays, and is below the budget of $200,000.

Crispin said the newly opened area would be planted with grass.

Jeff Boyle, parks director, discussed the east multi-use connector paths. These paths will provide the necessary links between the existing path, which ends at 22nd Street just south of HaysMed, and the new path, which will connect 41st Street and Hall to the Sternberg Museum of Natural History.

The total low bid for both connector paths is $231,616 from T&amp;T Builders, Hays, which will be voted on next week.

Once the new paths are constructed, there will be about five miles of multi-use path connecting the north and east sides of town.

Boyle and Roger Bixenman, superintendent of the Hays Recreation Commission, also presented a review of the 2024 financial reports and attendance for Hays Aquatic Park, Wilson Pool, and the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex. 

Recreation commission board members and city commissioners agreed to split this year's $50,895 operating loss for the pools. Hays will reimburse the rec center  $25,447.

The sports complex operated at a profit of&nbsp;$39,883.

Vice-Mayor Mason Ruder was absent from the work session.&nbsp;

The first significant step is getting utilities punched into there."</p><p>&nbsp;Commissioner Shaun Musil said many people wondered why the city bought the property.</p><p>"This shows that we're serious about development. ... We need retail. It's a priority," he said.</p><p>Musil also wants to see a new convention center built at that location "to bring events back to town. That helps everything."</p><p>Hays' general fund is primarily funded by the city's local sales tax.&nbsp;</p><figure>

                    </figure><p>In other business, Jeff Crispin, water resources director, discussed demolishing obsolete structures at the water reclamation and reuse facility, 755 General Custer Road.&nbsp;</p><p>Three clarifiers were abandoned when the facility was upgraded between 2017 and 2019 to meet the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's new permit requirements.&nbsp;</p><p>One clarifier will be kept, although its metal components will be removed. It will be used if highly contaminated wastewater needs to be temporarily separated.</p><p>A single bid of $191,550 was submitted by M&amp;D, Hays, and is below the budget of $200,000.</p><p>Crispin said the newly opened area would be planted with grass.</p><figure>

                    </figure><p>Jeff Boyle, parks director, discussed the east multi-use connector paths. These paths will provide the necessary links between the existing path, which ends at 22nd Street just south of HaysMed, and the new path, which will connect 41st Street and Hall to the Sternberg Museum of Natural History.</p><p>The total low bid for both connector paths is $231,616 from T&amp;T Builders, Hays, which will be voted on next week.</p><p>Once the new paths are constructed, there will be about five miles of multi-use path connecting the north and east sides of town.</p><p>Boyle and Roger Bixenman, superintendent of the Hays Recreation Commission, also presented a review of the 2024 financial reports and attendance for Hays Aquatic Park, Wilson Pool, and the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex. </p><p>Recreation commission board members and city commissioners agreed to split this year's $50,895 operating loss for the pools. Hays will reimburse the rec center  $25,447.</p><p>The sports complex operated at a profit of&nbsp;$39,883.</p><p>Vice-Mayor Mason Ruder was absent from the work session.&nbsp;</p>

Keren is a 5-year-old purebred Golden Retriever who started training at 8 weeks old and knows more than 35 commands for her role. In her free time, she loves playing with her ball.

Keren is one of 130 Lutheran Church Charities K-9 comfort dogs who support those in need across 27 states. She has been based at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Ellsworth since 2021.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian boys and girls fell to 0-2 to open the
season Friday with a loss in the consolation semifinals of the Hays City
Shootout at Hays Middle School.

The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs fell behind early and could
never overcome a big second-half run by Manhattan as the Indians defeated the
Monarchs 53-32 in the consolation semifinals of the Hays City Shootout Friday
at Hays Middle School.

Manhattan opened the game on a 14-0 run, forcing TMP into 10
first-quarter turnovers.

It took the Monarchs more than seven minutes to break onto
the scoreboard with a pair of Hannah Rose free throws. Then, with just nine
seconds left in the first quarter, Brooke Koenigsman scored her first field goal,
making it 16-4 through the first quarter.

The two teams traded field goals in the second quarter,
giving Manhattan a 27-15 lead at halftime.

The Indians opened the second half on a 16-0 run and never
trailed again in a 53-32 Manhattan win.

TMP’s Hannah Rose led the Monarchs with six points.

The Lady Monarchs will play Newton in the 7th-place game
Saturday at 10 a.m. at Hays Middle School.

The Newton Railers used a 43-8 run that covered three
quarters as they beat the TMP boys 57-24 Friday night in the consolation
semifinals of the Hays City Shootout Friday at Hays Middle School.

Newton opened the game on a 9-2 run before TMP got a Will
Eck three-pointer and an Ari Patel field goal, making it 9-7. 

But that was as close as the Monarchs would get the rest of
the way.

Newton closed the first quarter leading 21-12 after Eck made
his second three-pointer.

The Railers maintained the lead throughout the next three
quarters, and with the clock running in the fourth quarter, Newton earned the
57-24 victory.

Eck led the Monarchs with six points and Grant Nehls and
Caden Dinkel added five points each.

TMP will take on Manhattan in the 7th-place game at 11:45 a.m.
Saturday.

Hugoton took their first lead early in the second half. The teams traded the lead over the next four minutes until the Eagles grabbed a 34-30 advantage with 2:00 left in the third.&nbsp;</p><p>Hays battled back to tie the game at 32 just before the third quarter ended.</p><p>Dawson Ruder scored three of his team high 13 on a conventional three point play to put the Indians in front 35-34 two minutes into the fourth quarter.</p><p>The teams traded the lead over the next two minutes with Hugoton take their last lead at 4:10 remaining 40-39. A pair of Trey Oakley free throws gave Hays a lead they never gave up. Thirty seconds later Tiger Johnson buried a left corner three for a 44-40 lead with 2:25 left.</p><p>Hays led by five when the Eagles nailed a three pointer with a minute remaining. While leading by three with ten seconds left Hays fouled three times to put Hugoton to the free throw line. The Eagles converted both shots bringing the score to 46-45.
