After many years as a cook, Patsy Denault, a Russell native, has finally realized her dream of having her barbecue sauce on store shelves.

Denault, 56, said she doesn't like to categorize her sauce.&nbsp;

"People say it's a Kansas City style. I say it's a Russell, Kansas, style," she said. "You try it. It just lights your mouth up. I couldn't be prouder."

She said you don't have to season your meat because she covered that in her sauce.

"I'd toss my sauce in the barbecue ring anytime," she said.

Her sauce was rated 8.6 by<a href="https://www.facebook.com/p/JackstacksEats-100085357067268/"> jackstacks.eats</a>, a food reviewer.

Denault worked for 20 years as a cook at Meridy's Restaurant in Russell.

She struggled with health issues and was forced to have three rotator cuff surgeries.

After she left Meridy's, Denault operated a catering business and two food trailers.

"Now my barbecue sauce is my vision, and that's what I'm following," she said.

The first time Denault barbecued was for a friend's graduation party.&nbsp;

"I forgot that I had never touched a barbecue grill, and I had to borrow four barbecue grills," she said. "But they said it was awesome."

In the beginning, she didn't use her own sauce recipe.

"There was a guy that asked me yesterday, Patsy, don't tell me that you got this recipe for this barbecue sauce overnight," she said.

Denault had a catering job for her long-time bank in Russell and wanted it to be special.

Her uncle and brother had their own barbecue sauce recipes, but Denault said she preferred to make her own sauce from the ground up.

"I went into the kitchen and threw 32 ingredients together. I tried it and said it's an amazing sauce, and here we are today, three years later," she said.

Denault said she had a hard life growing up.

Denault faced more health problems, including a broken leg and knee replacement, but she was determined to realize her dream of selling her barbecue sauce.

She worked for a time for Bricks Rockin' BBQ in downtown Hays, which is now closed.

However, she faced more tragedy when her husband of 30 years died during the pandemic. She also lost two lifelong friends back to back.

She struggled with alcohol, but she has been more than 800 days sober.

"I had so many deaths that I jumped into the bottle," she said.

She added, "I finally learned what it was through God and faith."

Because of her struggles, seeing her barbecue sauce on store shelves was a great accomplishment.

"The first time I saw my barbecue sauce on the shelf ... a lot of tears, you know," she said. "It was my vision."

"If I can do this, anyone can do it," she said. "I like to see people open some doors. I know a lot of people will tell you can't,&nbsp; but I'm here to tell you can if it's your dream."

She said a Steve Harvey motivational video inspired her.

"He said you just find something that you're really good at. You sell it to 100 of your friends. Then you sell it to 1,000 people, then 10,000, 100,000, then you're on your way," she said. "And I did that."

Denault said she is happy with where the barbecue sauce is going.&nbsp;

"It's been my dream. This is probably the first time I've ever dreamed anything," she said. "To see it on a plate is just a wonderful thing. "

"I know this is not the end. It's just the beginning. It's going to be a wonderful thing," she said.

Russell native launches homemade BBQ sauce in stores

Northwest Kansas Jiu Jitsu hopes people will feel empowered at its seminar in Hays,&nbsp;where you’ll learn various martial arts techniques and strategies.

Two Jiu-Jitsu seminars will take place on Sept. 14 at the Hays High Wrestling Room, 2300 E 13th St., for anyone interested in learning Jiu-Jitsu and its practical application in self-defense.

Coaches Amy and Anthony Dovidio own Hays, and the married couple considers it a potential new location as they test the waters with upcoming seminars.

"We just want to make sure that it's something the community wants," Amy said.

Youth ages 4 to 14 can attend the seminar at 10 a.m., while adults 15 and older can participate at 11 a.m. in regular workout attire. NWKS Jiu Jitsu has been operating in Colby, 1035 Taylor Ave., and Goodland, 602 Caldwell Avenue, since its opening in 2021.

Amy said this martial art stands out from others as it is a self-defense combat sport focused on grappling, ground fighting and submission holds.

"It's more closely related to wrestling," she said. "You can go for choke holds, joint manipulation, arm bars, knee bars, leg locks, heel hooks, and there's a bunch of different wrist locks."

Amy said the seminars aim to gauge the community's interest in Jiu-Jitsu, potentially leading to a new location in Hays, while providing lessons to those interested.

NWKS Jiu Jitsu offers a range of classes for anyone age 4 and older who wants to become a competitive fighter, learn the gentle art, master self-defense, pursue MMA, get a great workout or simply have fun.

Amy said individuals travel to Colby and Goodland for quality training and classes, and they want to provide a more convenient opportunity to learn through the seminars.

"Jiu-Jitsu is a good avenue to explore different activities that have applications to their life. It's a fun, addicting and challenging martial art that is always evolving."

The sport was introduced to the United States in the 1900s and uses leverage and various techniques to allow a smaller and weaker individual to overcome a larger and stronger opponent.

This self-defense art is valuable for everyone, including children facing bullying, serving as a last resort for safety, and both men and women.

"You can get somebody into a hold until the police come," Amy said.

In the last two years, NWKS Jiu Jitsu has worked with the Sherman County Sheriff's Office, providing training and demonstrating techniques applicable to their work, such as self-defense and safely arresting individuals.

Amy has been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for five years and coaches the Women's Only program and other regular classes. She also offers private lessons and special sessions for schools and other organizations.

Amy and Anthony relocated to Goodland to be closer to family when Anthony was encouraged to start Jiu-Jitsu classes. Their locations now have a combined enrollment of 150 students.

"If somebody is really interested in having Jiu Jitsu in Hays, let us know because we're researching to make sure it's something that everybody wants," Amy said.

NWKS Jiu Jitsu sets seminars for youth, adults in Hays, considering new location

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Police said Saturday that a man will face misdemeanor charges after he stormed into the press area at&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump's</a>&nbsp;rally in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, before being surrounded by authorities and eventually subdued with a Taser as the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-moms-for-liberty-election-2024-education-7b408b46f58c4ba6177f809c4d0b2fb2">former president spoke</a>&nbsp;at the campaign stop.

The incident Friday came moments after Trump had criticized major media outlets for what he said was unfavorable coverage and had dismissed CNN as fawning for its interview Thursday with his Democratic rival&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris</a>&nbsp;and her running mate, Tim Walz.

It was not immediately clear what motivated the man or whether he was a Trump supporter or critic.

The man made it over a barrier ringing the media area and began climbing the back side of a riser where television reporters and cameras were stationed, according to a video of the incident&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/taureansmall/status/1829636618233287111">posted to social media</a>&nbsp;by a reporter for CBS News. People near him tried to pull him off the riser and were quickly joined by police officers and sheriff's deputies.

The crowd cheered as a pack of police led the man away, prompting Trump to say, “Is there anywhere that’s more fun to be than a Trump rally?”

Johnstown's police chief, Richard M. Pritchard, confirmed to The Associated Press on Saturday that the man was arrested, released and will be formally charged next week. Pritchard said the man, whose identity will be disclosed when charges are filed, will face misdemeanors in municipal court for alleged disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and disrupting a public assembly.

Pritchard, who was not directly involved in the arrest, declined to speculate on the man’s motives.

Fierce criticism of the media is a standard part of Trump’s rally speeches, and his supporters often react by turning toward the press section and booing; some use their middle finger to demonstrate their distaste for journalists.

Moments before the man ventured into the media's designated section, Trump had reprised his familiar assertion that the media is a collective “enemy of the people.” Video of the incident does not make clear what the man was yelling as he climbed barriers or as he was being subdued and arrested.

Trump's campaign tried to distance the former president from the man and his actions, suggesting he was a Trump opponent.

“Witnesses, including some in the press corps, described a crazed individual shouting expletives at President Trump,” said campaign senior adviser Danielle Alvarez. “His aggression was focused on the president and towards the stage as he entered the press area.”

Alvarez did not identify the witnesses she cited or expound on what the man may have shouted. Alvarez added that the campaign appreciates the response of local law enforcement officials and the U.S. Secret Service for acting quickly.

Shortly after the incident, police handcuffed another man in the crowd and led him out of the arena. It was not immediately clear whether that detention was related to the initial altercation.

The incident happened amid&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/secret-service-trump-rally-4e3415b1461f5acefbc8e1fadad0375b">heightened scrutiny</a>&nbsp;of security at Trump rallies after a gunman&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-vp-vance-rubio-7c7ba6b99b5f38d2d840ed95b2fdc3e5">fired at him,</a>&nbsp;grazing his ear, during an outdoor rally in July in nearby Butler, Pennsylvania. Security at political events has been noticeably&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-security-assassination-secret-service-043e872757a8814a746dd413b28ea26e">tighter</a>&nbsp;since the shooting.

A Secret Service spokesperson referred questions to local authorities.

Man will face charges after storming into the press area at a Trump rally

HAYS - Olathe West held off late charges from Beloit in both of the championship sets to win the Maroon and Gold championship on Saturday at Hays High School. The Owls won both sets 25-23 to improve to 5-0 on the young season. The Trojans fell to 3-2 with both losses coming to West.

Hays and TMP battled it out for third place with the Monarchs avenging a pool play loss to the Indians. TMP won the match 25-23, 25-23.

Fifth place was won by Colby over Salina South. Colby trailed 24-17 in the second set before winning 26-24. They won the first set 30-28.

Scott City defeated Wichita Southeast for 7th.

🏐 Olathe West wins Maroon & Gold; TMP 3rd, Hays 4th

The <a href="https://www.liveunited.us/">United Way of Ellis County</a> kicked off its annual fundraising Campaign on Friday at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall in Hays.

This year's fundraising goal is $350,000. The campaign's theme is "United We Thrive."

The number of non-profit agencies that the United Way funds varies each year, but last year it was 13.

These included: • Big Brothers Big Sisters • Cancer Council of Ellis County • Center for Life Experience • Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation • Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) • Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas (DSNWK) • STEM Harvest • Salvation Army • First Call for Help • Hays Senior Center • Options Domestic Violence and Sexual Assualt Services • Parents and Children Together • Western Kansas Association on the Concerns of the Disabled • Western Kansas Child Advocacy Center

"Without access to resources, people experiencing hard times will have nowhere to turn," Erica Berges, United Way executive director, said. "They will have no chance to get back on their feet and thrive."

United Way has expanded its core missions to include youth opportunities, a healthy community, financial security and community&nbsp;resiliency.&nbsp;

Representatives of CASA and the Healing Hearts grief support group sponsored by the Center for Life Experience shared their stories during the Hays Chamber luncheon on Friday.

Brooke Moore, a court appointed special advocate, talked about the first case she was assigned as a volunteer. The child was a 13-year-old boy, who she called Kevin (not his real name), who had been removed from his home for neglect.

CASA volunteers are assigned to child in need of care cases when children are removed from homes for abuse or neglect. It is their job to speak with family members, school officials, caretakers, therapists and anyone else involved in cases so they can speak for the child in court.

Kevin's parents, who had mental health issues, struggled to take care of themselves and were not taking care of Kevin. When he lived with his parents, he was forced to act as an adult and ensure his family was cared for and had food.

He was bounced back and forth between a stable home with his aunt and an unstable home with his parents.

When he was with his aunt, he thrived. The community and school supported him, and he had many friends.

However, he was chronically absent from school when he lived with his parents and began falling behind in his academics.

Through a series of interviews, Moore learned more about Kevin's situation. Although he loves his parents, he wrote a letter to the judge explaining that he preferred to live with his aunt, where he was safe and cared for.

Although a difficult decision, his parents finally signed permanent custody over to Kevin's aunt.

"I love what I do. I love that you support that," Moore said.

Vaughn Marcum of WaKeeney talked about his experience with Healing Hearts.

The Center for Life Experience offers three grief support groups: • Healing After Loss of Suicide (HALOS) • Healing After Loss (for those who are grieving for adults) • Healing Hearts (for those who are grieving the loss of children)

Marcum said he and his wife lost five family members and a close friend within about two years.

However, the most difficult death was their grandson, Mason, who died when the vehicle he was driving rear-ended a tanker truck.

He attended Healing Hearts, where he found comfort in sharing his grief.

Through tears, he urged the audience to donate to the United Way campaign.

"Thank God for Healing Hearts. Thank God for the United Way. Please don't stop," he said of supporting United Way.

The United Way also sponsors a youth financial literacy course, Reality U. This year, the event will be Nov. 6 and 7. Volunteer signup will be released soon.

The United Way collects change through its Pumpkin Packers during the three homecoming parades throughout the fall in Hays.

United Way is also in the process of updating its Ellis County Resources guide.&nbsp;

CASA, Healing Hearts share stories of how United Way helps community at kickoff

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State opened the 2024 football season with a 21-7 win over No. 24 ranked Angelo State at Lewis Field on Friday afternoon in a game postponed from the night before due to lightning. The Tigers claimed their first-ever win over a team from Texas and have now won back-to-back games against AFCA ranked opponents at Lewis Field. 

Fort Hays State (1-0), receiving votes in the AFCA Preseason Top 25 poll, snapped a four-season run of dropping home openers with their first win in a home opener since the 2018 season. Two of those four losses in that run were to nationally ranked teams.

The Tiger defense allowed just 203 yards of total offense to the Rams. The Tigers had big performances from the men in the middle, led by linebacker Makel Williams who had 12 tackles and&nbsp;and a new FHSU high for Benyon Williams&nbsp;with 11 tackles. Sam Brandt&nbsp;&nbsp;matched his career high in tackles with 10. Mason Perez forced a key fumble to set up FHSU's final score early in the fourth quarter to make the eventual final score. 

The Tigers scored on their second possession thanks to big plays from brothers Travis and Shane Watts. Travis opened the seven-play, 90-yard march with a 24-yard reception. Shane capped it with a 51-yard pass reception, breaking several tackles before winning a footrace to the endzone.

FHSU marched 90-yards for a touchdown on their next possession. Freshman receiver Jabari Lewis&nbsp;had a big field-flipping reception, going 51 yards to the ASU 17. Three plays later, Ryan Allen&nbsp;hauled in a 19-yard reception to put the Tigers up 14-0.

Angelo State scored their lone touchdown on its third drive of the game. The Rams used six plays to go 65 yards, capped by a 28-yard touchdown run by quarterback Kaeden Smith to cut the lead to 14-7.

The third quarter was a stalemate with five punts between the two teams. The Perez forced fumble on the first play of the fourth quarter was recovered at the Rams 14-yard line Shane Watts&nbsp;did all the work with three rushes capped with a six-yard scamper into the endzone.

Shane Watts&nbsp;finished the game with 122 all-purpose yards, rushing for 60 and receiving for 62. Jack Dawson&nbsp;spread the ball around to eight different receivers, going 23-of-36 for 271 yards with the two touchdown passes and an interception. 

Dawson moved into a tie for sixth on FHSU's all-time passing touchdowns list with Dustin McEwen.&nbsp;

Trevor Watts&nbsp;led the Tigers in receiving yards with 73 on six catches. The Tigers had four receivers finish with at least 40 yards in the game.

Fort Hays State will host Missouri Western State (1-0) on Saturday, September 7. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. KDHE investigates publicly accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.&nbsp;

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. Public Health Advisories for Kansas Lakes due to blue-green algae

Hays received .93 inches of rain at the Eagle Media Center, 2300 Hall, on Thursday.

No official K-State Ag Research Center report has been received as of this post.

Hays has received 5.18 inches of rain for August and 19.08 inches of precipitation year to date.

That exceeds the 3.01-inch average for August and the 17.70-inch year-to-date average.

No further rain is expected through Thursday with highs in the 80s.

Rain Thursday but clear skies, cooler for Labor Day weekend

Campers are suiting up into their favorite costumes in preparation for their Center Stage Theatre performance.

Center Stage Theatre is an organization that showcases the talents of individuals with disabilities.

The Center Stage Theatre performance is set for 7 p.m. Saturday&nbsp;at Celebration Community Church, 5790 230th Ave. It is free for everyone to attend and watch the campers dive into the exciting world of Comic-Con.

Camp director Annie Wasinger said the superhero-themed play mirrors the world's diverse range of people and personalities.

"If art is going to imitate life, it has to reflect the diversity of humanity, so the best art is when there's a diverse cast of characters," she said.

The show follows a group of friends attending Comic-Con for the first time, who compete in a friendly competition to see who can claim the title of best cosplayer.

The play features campers bringing to life iconic superheroes like Spider-Man, Batman, Wolverine, Captain America, and Mario, as well as infamous villains such as The Joker, Harley Quinn and Bowser.

It's a bird, it's a plane, it’s Tyler Jones as Superman, who said he is looking forward to this weekend and encouraged everyone to come and watch.

"I'm excited for the show, and I'm excited to be Superman," he said. "I've been toiling away."

Jones is a six-year camper and said his favorite part of camp is singing and spending time with his friends.

Wasinger said the atmosphere is always positive, and it is important to provide opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

"I see camp as putting everyone at center stage where they belong and correcting that wrong of excluding people from the arts because it's beneficial for everyone to have the opportunity to express themselves," she said.

The first few scenes will spotlight returning campers, like Jones, who set the stage for the story before everyone else joins in for the Comic-Con setting.

What sets this year's performance apart from previous shows is the larger cast size, with about 30 people involved in the production.

"There's such as a sense of collective acceptance for any expression of art," Wasinger said. "I feel like it's grown in energy over the years."

Wasinger said participating in theatre benefits everyone, including building confidence and encouraging people to step outside their comfort zone.

Putting together a play is challenging for anyone, but Wasinger recognizes that the show's cast features a group that the community may not be familiar with.

"I definitely don't think anyone will walk in and leave without a smile on their face, having met a friend or made a friend," she said.

Wasinger, a Hays native now living in Wichita, has been traveling to Celebration Community Church to direct, write and produce for Center Stage Theatre.

 </figure>What sets this year's performance apart from previous shows is the larger cast size, with about 30 people involved in the production."There's such as a sense of collective acceptance for any expression of art," Wasinger said. 6th-annual Center Stage Theatre Camp performance this Saturday in Hays

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kamala-harris">Vice President Kamala Harris</a>&nbsp;on Thursday defended shifting away from her some of her more liberal positions in her first major television interview of her presidential campaign, but insisted her “values have not changed,” even as she is “seeking consensus.”

Sitting with her running mate,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-picks-tim-walz-running-mate-a64a91ae84953e880c8d086316d07c54">Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz</a>, Harris was asked about changes in her policies over the years, specifically her reversals on fracking and decriminalizing illegal border crossings.

“I think the most important and most significant aspect of my policy perspective and decisions is my values have not changed,” Harris said.

She went on to say: “I believe it is important to build consensus. It is important to find a common place of understanding where we can actually solve the problem.”

The interview with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/harris-interview-walz-cnn-eba7d9e9b53a46987f62f7f9206f0db8">CNN’s Dana Bash</a>&nbsp;comes as voters are still trying to learn more about the Democratic ticket under an unusually compressed time frame —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-election-2024-ending-race-be10da43b9447ef1230c178b15c4760a">Joe Biden stepped down</a>&nbsp;just five weeks ago. It was focused largely on policy, as Harris sought to show that she had adopted more moderate positions on issues that Republicans argue are extreme, while Walz defended past misstatements.

Joint interviews during an election year are a fixture in politics; Biden and Harris, Trump and Mike Pence, Barack Obama and Biden — all did them at a similar point in the race. The difference is those other candidates had all done solo interviews, too. Harris hadn't done an in-depth interview since she became her party's standard bearer five weeks ago, though she did sit for several while she was still Biden's running mate.

Harris said serving with Biden was “one of the greatest honors of my career,” as she recounted the moment he called to tell her he was stepping down and would support her.

"He told me what he had decided to do and ... I asked him, ‘Are you sure?’ and he said, ‘Yes,’ and that’s how I learned about it.”

She said she didn’t ask Biden to endorse her because “he was very clear that he was going to endorse me.”

Harris defended the administration’s record on the southern border and immigration, noting that she was tasked with trying to address the “root causes” in other countries that were driving the border crossings.

“We have laws that have to be followed and enforced, that address and deal with people who cross our border illegally, and there should be consequences,” Harris said.

Asked about Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza, Harris said, “I am unequivocal and unwavering in my commitment to Israel’s defense and its ability to defend itself.” But the vice president also reiterated what she’s said for months, that civilian deaths are too high amid the fighting.

She also brushed off Republican Donald Trump’s questioning of her racial identity after he said she&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-black-journalists-convention-nabj-1e96aa530e88013ed6f577feaf89ccb6">“happened to turn Black.”</a>&nbsp;Harris, who is of Black and South Asian heritage, said it was the “same old, tired playbook.”

Trump and Harris are set to debate on Sept. 10. In a post Thursday evening, it appeared Trump was paying close attention to the interview. After the debate was mentioned, he posted, “I look so forward to Debating Comrade Comrade Kamala Harris and exposing her for the fraud she is.”

Trump went on to say that his Democratic opponent “has changed every one of her long held positions, on everything. America will never allow an Election WEAPONIZING MARXIST TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE U.S.”

The debate will be the first-ever meeting for Harris and Trump. The opponents had only been in the same space when Harris, as a senator, attended Trump’s State of the Union addresses.

During the interview, Walz watched quietly and nodded when Harris made her main points. He was asked about misstatements, starting with how he has described his 24 years of service in the National Guard.

In a 2018 video clip that the Harris-Walz campaign once circulated, Walz spoke out against gun violence and said, “We can make sure that those weapons of war, that I carried in war, is the only place where those weapons are at.”

Critics said the comment “that I carried in war” suggested that Walz portrayed himself as someone who spent time in a combat zone. But a campaign spokesperson said he misspoke.
