REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (AP) — The Israeli strike that killed Hezbollah’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/obituary-nasrallah-lebanon-israel-2da3789a02fd4e2e88511a7f59174d19">Hassan Nasrallah</a>&nbsp;was a “measure of justice" for victims of a four-decade “reign of terror,” President Joe Biden said Saturday.

The comments came after Lebanon’s Hezbollah group&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lebanon-israel-hezbollah-airstrikes-28-september-2024-c4751957433ff944c4eb06027885a973">confirmed earlier Saturday</a>&nbsp;that Nasrallah, one of the group’s founders, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut the previous day.

Biden noted that the operation to take out Nasrallah took place in the broader context of the conflict that began with Hamas’ massacre of Israelis on Oct. 7, 2023.

“Nasrallah, the next day, made the fateful decision to join hands with Hamas and open what he called a ‘northern front’ against Israel,” Biden said in a statement.

He also noted that Hezbollah under Nasrallah’s watch has been responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans, Israelis and Lebanese.

Hezbollah attacks against U.S. interests include the truck bombing of the U.S. Embassy and multinational force barracks in Beirut in 1983 and the kidnapping of the Central Intelligence Agency chief of station in Beirut, who died while held captive. The U.S. said Hezbollah leaders armed and trained militias that carried out attacks on American forces during the war in Iraq.

The White House sees the death of Nasrallah as a huge blow to the group. At the same time, the administration has sought to tread carefully as it has tried to contain Israel 's war with Hamas, which, like Hezbollah, is backed by Iran, from exploding into an all-out regional conflict.

The White House and Pentagon were quick on Friday, shortly after the strike, to say publicly that Israel offered it no forewarning of the operation.

“President Biden and I do not want to see conflict in the Middle East escalate into a broader regional war,” Vice President Kamala Harris said in a statement Saturday that echoed Biden's description of a “measure of justice.” She added, “Diplomacy remains the best path forward to protect civilians and achieve lasting stability in the region.”

The confirmation of Nasrallah's death comes during a week that began with Biden’s top national security aides working on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly to build support for a 21-day Israel-Hezbollah cease-fire that they hoped might also breathe new life into stalled efforts to secure a truce in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-lebanon-united-nations-12e02fd82f35a8438aa907ca6762bac0">Netanyahu delivered a defiant speech</a>&nbsp;Friday to the United Nations, vowing to keep up operations against Hezbollah until tens of thousands of Israeli citizens displaced by rocket attacks can return home. Shortly after, Israel carried out the strike killing Nasrallah.

Biden reiterated on Saturday that he wants to see cease-fires both in Gaza and between Israel and Hezbollah.

“It is time for these deals to close, for the threats to Israel to be removed, and for the broader Middle East region to gain greater stability,” Biden said.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused the United States of supporting the killing that took out Nasrallah and dozens of others.

“The world community will not forget that the order of the terrorist strike was issued from New York and the Americans cannot absolve themselves from complicity with the Zionists,” Pezeshkian was quoted as saying in a statement read on Iranian state television.

The State Department on Saturday ordered the departure of the families of U.S. diplomats who are not employed by the embassy in Beirut and authorized the departure of those who are, as well as nonessential employees because of “the volatile and unpredictable security situation” in Lebanon’s capital.

The State Department has previously advised American citizens to consider leaving Lebanon and reiterated its warning against all travel to the country.

“Due to the increased volatility following airstrikes within Beirut and the volatile and unpredictable security situation throughout Lebanon, the U.S. Embassy urges U.S. citizens to depart Lebanon while commercial options still remain available,” the department said in a statement Saturday.

The State Department routinely orders or authorizes the departure of nonessential embassy staffers and the families of diplomats when security conditions deteriorate in the country where they are posted.

An ordered departure is not technically an evacuation but does require those affected to leave. An authorized departure allows those affected to leave the country voluntarily at government expense.

Biden on Friday directed the Pentagon to assess and adjust as necessary the U.S. force posture in the region to enhance deterrence, ensure force protection and support the full range of U.S. objectives.

A Ford Ranger with one occupant was westbound on 62nd Street at U.S. 75 Highway, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

It appears the driver failed to stop at the stop sign, according to Christian. A southbound jeep with two occupants struck the pickup.

The driver of the Ford pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. American Medical Response transported two in the jeep to a local hospital. The accident remains under investigation.&nbsp; The sheriff's office released no additional details early Saturday. Check the&nbsp; Post for more information as it becomes available.

1 dead, 2 hospitalized after crash on Kansas highway

RILEY COUNTY —One person died in an accident involving a motorcycle and pedestrian just before 10p.m. Friday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department, a Honda CX 500 Custom motorcycle driven by Kameron Banks, 19, of Manhattan, was westbound in the 2300 Block of U.S. 24 between Kimball Avenue and Northfield Drive.

The motorcycle collided with a pedestrian, identified as Travell Toliver, 49, of Manhattan, who was crossing the highway. Toliver was pronounced dead at the scene.

&nbsp;Riley County EMS transported Banks to Ascension Via Christi and later he was transferred to Stormont Vail in Topeka by Life Star. He is expected to survive his injuries.

The road was closed for several hours to allow for investigation, with assistance from Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) in diverting traffic.

RCPD is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact our department at (785) 537-2112 or submit information through Crime Stoppers.

Kansas man dead after struck by a motorcycle

ATLANTA (AP) — The Kansas City Royals completed one of the most remarkable turnarounds in major league history Friday night, clinching an American League wild card despite&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/braves-royals-score-fried-02583b042ef05aa1317b0eed23af86e9">a 3-0 loss</a>&nbsp;to the Atlanta Braves.

A year ago, the Royals matched a franchise record with 106 losses. Now, they are headed to the postseason for the first time since winning the 2015 World Series.

“We’re just so proud of everyone,” said shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., the face of the revitalized franchise. “This is just the beginning of something special.”

The celebration was delayed by a masterful performance from Atlanta pitcher Max Fried. But the Royals finally popped the champagne corks in the visitors' clubhouse at Truist Park when the Minnesota Twins were eliminated with a 7-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

“This isn’t how we ideally wanted it,” Witt said. “But we’re here. We did it. We’re so proud of each other. We can’t let one game control our season.”

Led by second-year manager Matt Quatraro, Kansas City is the first team in baseball history to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-kansas-city-major-league-baseball-playoffs-faf7e1aee9a4322eb969f93e503be055">make the playoffs after posting such a dismal mark</a>&nbsp;the previous season.

In fact, since the start of the expansion era in 1961, the Royals are just the third team to advance to the postseason after losing at least 100 games the previous year.

The Twins earned a wild card in 2017 after going 59-103 a year earlier, and the 2020 Florida Marlins qualified for a wild card during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign coming off a 57-105 debacle.

The Royals quickly fell on hard times after claiming back-to-back AL pennants in 2014 and ’15 and their first World Series title in 30 years. They had not recorded a winning season since their championship run, losing at least 100 games in three of the past six, and were a total laughingstock just a year ago.

That all changed this season with a team led by Witt, who became the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-bobby-witt-jr-steals-homers-2f244fb981427ad0622cbc0d73c200df">first shortstop in major league history</a>&nbsp;with multiple seasons of at least 30 homers and 30 steals.

“You can’t help but be proud,” general manager J.J. Picollo said. “It was a battle all year long. We overcame a lot of odds.”

The Royals have struggled down the stretch, enduring a pair of seven-game losing streaks.

“We had some adversity here the last month of the season,” Picollo said. “But this is a tough, resilient group and we got through and here we are celebrating this moment.”

Witt tops the majors with 210 hits and a .332 batting average, to go along with 32 homers, 109 RBIs and 31 stolen bases.

Veteran catcher Salvador Perez also is having a huge offensive season with 27 homers and 104 RBIs. The Royals made the playoffs even after losing first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino, who had 97 RBIs before breaking his right thumb and undergoing surgery.

There is a chance Pasquantino could return during the playoffs if the Royals make an extended run.

Amazingly, Picollo didn’t have to break the bank to build a small-market winner.

The players that have led Kansas City to heights not seen in nearly a decade were either on the team last year and just needed a little more time to grow, or were free-agent signings and trade acquisitions that underscored Picollo’s baseball savvy.

Seth Lugo, who is 16-9 with a 3.03 ERA, signed a modest three-year, $45 million free-agent deal. Michael Wacha signed a similar two-year, $32 million deal and is 13-8 with a 3.35 ERA.

Cole Ragans has contributed 11 wins with 223 strikeouts after being acquired from the Texas Rangers in a trade last season. Brady Singer bounced back from a disappointing 2023, and Michael Lorenzen is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in six starts since his arrival just before the trade deadline.

The bullpen has been entirely rebuilt, too, with Lucas Erceg earning 11 saves since the Royals landed him in a trade with Milwaukee.

Owner John Sherman said he was thrilled the fans of Kansas City have a winning team to cheer for again.

“I remember we talked about this a lot, maybe in spring training, that all we want to do is play meaningful baseball in August and September and have a chance to play in October,” Sherman said. “Here we are.”

Nobody seems to be having more fun than Witt, who has put together a historic season after signing an 11-year deal worth $288.7 million to serve as the cornerstone of the franchise.

The son of longtime big league pitcher Bobby Witt is the first player in major league history with multiple 30-30 seasons in his first three years in the majors. Advanced metrics grade him as not only one of baseball’s best defenders but also one of its fastest players.

“He’s the best player in baseball,” Ragans said recently. “A special talent, a special human being."

While fans in Kansas City have seen Witt’s stardom blossoming for several seasons, his coming-out party may have come this summer during the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/home-run-derby-261037bfe182674c9cd7352725d8b62a">Home Run Derby</a>&nbsp;at Globe Life Field in Arlington, not far from where he grew up in Colleyville, Texas.

Witt reached the finals before losing 14-13 to Teoscar Hernández of the Dodgers in a dramatic showdown that came down to the final swings.

Now, Witt can look forward to an even bigger stage.

The proposal involves a 300-head boar breeding facility two miles west and one mile north of the town.

A public notice was issued on Aug. 22, notifying the community that a water pollution control permit is under consideration for the project.

Rooks County Commissioner John Ruder said that although Rooks County is not zoned, the facility still requires approval from the county commission.

"Our county attorney and another local attorney, who is interested in this project, found a statute stating that all swine facilities must be approved by county commissioners," Ruder said.

&nbsp;A 30-day comment period started on Sept. 5 and will end on Oct. 5. Individuals can submit their concerns directly to the <a href="https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/436/Livestock-Waste-Management">Livestock Waste Management of KDHE</a>.

Residents can express their concerns during the weekly Rooks County Commission meetings at 9 a.m. every Tuesday at the Rooks County Courthouse, 115 N. Walnut in Stockton.

Ruder listed potential advantages, such as increased tax revenue and job creation. He said he hopes to have a Murphy's representative speak to the residents.

"We sent an email to the facility owners and asked them to come to a meeting and tell us their plans," Ruder said.

Ruder acknowledges the community's concerns regarding groundwater contamination, odor and water usage.

Attorney Ashley Comeau of Jeter Law Firm opposes the swine facility, representing clients who could be affected by its operation.

Comeau raises concerns about why the facility is proposed so close to Plainville and the Rooks County Health Center, given the county's large size.

"Rooks County is almost 900 square miles, and they selected a location three miles from Plainville. That seems unnecessary," she said.

Due to concerns about its proximity to the city limits, Comeau said she would be more open to the facility being further away.

Comeau is a business and property owner in Plainville. Many of her clients' main concerns include water scarcity and the potential risk of groundwater contamination.

In 2020, residents living near Murphy-Brown's hog production facilities in North Carolina filed a <a href="https://law.justia.com/cases/federal/appellate-courts/ca4/19-1019/19-1019-2020-11-19.html">lawsuit</a> under state nuisance law, citing odor, pests and noise generated by the company’s hog farm operations.

The jury found in favor of the facilities' neighbors, awarding plaintiffs $75,000 in compensatory damages and a total of $5 million in punitive damages. North Carolina's cap on punitive damages reduced the total to $2.5 million.&nbsp;

In 1998, the United States filed a <a href="https://casetext.com/case/us-v-smithfield-foods-inc-2#:~:text=In%20the%20end%2C%20the%20district,to%20proceed%20in%20state%20court.">lawsuit </a>against Smithfield, the parent company of Murphy Brown LLC, for releasing wastewater from its hog processing facility into the Pagan River in Virginia.

Smithfield was found liable for multiple violations of the Clean Water Act, and the court imposed a $12.6 million civil penalty.

Ray Atkinson, senior director of External Communications at Smithfield, said while the facility will be smaller than other farms, it will still generate jobs.

"This will create about a dozen specialized jobs in the area," Atkinson said.

Smithfield would offer in-house training and certifications for residents handling technical operations.&nbsp;The facility would also be fully enclosed and equipped with air conditioning and filtration systems.

Atkinson acknowledges the houses within a mile or so of the proposed site.

Comeau said she is concerned about the long-term effects of the facility and its potential expansion in the area.

"We've invested our livelihoods and plan to be here long term. What does this facility look like 10 to 20 years from now?" she said.

A public member spoke at the Sept. 17 Rooks County meeting, saying he has been in contact with people in Iowa and North Carolina where Smithfield has established facilities.

"They've noted a pattern over the last 30 years when Smithfield enters their communities. They do so with a small facility, let that run for about five years and then start expanding," he said.

Hays Post contacted other Plainville residents for comments, but they declined to speak on the record. However, concerns about the facility have been shared on social media.

Murphy Brown LLC submits permit for hog farm 3 miles from Plainville

Three new housing and business development projects in Hays are moving forward after several funding mechanisms were approved by city commissioners on Thursday.&nbsp;

Hays developers plan two downtown housing projects.

Adam Pray has purchased the former Hays State Bank building at 11th and Main to redevelop into a new luxury short-term rental Airbnb called Chestnut Suites.

The city approved a $300,000 Community Development Block Grant&nbsp; agreement between Hays and the state commerce department and between Hays and Chestnut Suites, along with a repayment agreement with the developer for the $3.2 million project.

An ordinance establishing a Reinvestment Housing Incentive District (RHID) was also approved, and a development plan for housing and public facilities at 10th and Walnut will be considered. 

Hays developer Michael Graham Rentals is planning to build 48 apartments on the site of the former railroad depot parking lot in downtown Hays.

The district is expected to generate about $1.1 million of revenue during its maximum 25-year term. The revenue would reimburse the developer for an estimated $692,000 in RHID-eligible project costs on a pay-as-you-go basis.

"The investment you guys are making in downtown Hays is just fabulous," said Mayor Sandy Jacobs to Pray and Graham, who were in the audience.

"We're so lucky to have guys like you," said Mason Ruder, vice-mayor. "You're taking this risk and investing it right back in the community."

Commissioner Alaina Cunningham said she thought even the residents already living near the two planned developments will be excited about the new projects.&nbsp;

Funds were authorized for the 27th and Main Street business development project.&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/838fe958-24ab-4afe-a463-4daa732a1c4f">Astra Bank</a>&nbsp;is relocating and building a new facility on that site.

&nbsp;The city will pay $89,000 to construct the stormwater management infrastructure at the south end of the property and $205,000&nbsp;to extend 26th Street through the development, which is half of the cost. The bank will pay the remainder.

Access to the new bank will be from 26th Street.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The city of Hays has purchased 1100 Fort, the existing Astra Bank building, to redevelop it as a new police station and municipal court facility.

Commissioners also awarded a $3.03 million bid by APAC-Kansas, Hays, for construction related to school improvements along the East 13th Street corridor between Canterbury Drive and Commerce Parkway.

The reconstruction is a joint project between the city, Ellis County, the Kansas Department of Transportation and USD 489.&nbsp;The school district will reimburse the city $763,000 for their portion of the project. 

The city’s portion of the project includes reconstructing the road from Anthony Drive to Commerce Parkway, including widening sections of East 13th Street from two to three lanes, installation of a multi-use path along the north side of the entire project and a mill and overlay of the complete roadway.&nbsp;

USD 489 is responsible for adding two right-turn lanes, pedestrian crossings, and upgraded signals at 13th and Canterbury.

Mayor Shaun Musil, Commissioner Reese Barrick, City Manager Toby Dougherty and Finance Director Kim Rupp were absent from the meeting.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs moved to 3-1 for the fifth straight year as they cruised to a 50-7 win over the Stanton County Trojans Friday night at Lewis Field in Hays.

The Monarchs wasted no time on homecoming jumping out to an early lead scoring less than two minutes into the game on a Carson Liles touchdown pass to Adler Brown, his first career receiving touchdown, from seven yards out that put TMP up 6-0. The Monarchs scoring drive took less than two minutes and covered 64 yards.

After a quick four plays, TMP got the ball right back at their 47-yard line and put together a six-play touchdown drive that was capped off by a 29-yard touchdown run, on third and goal, by Logan Baalmann—his first of two rushing touchdowns in the first half.

The Monarchs defense netted a pair of points on the next Stanton County drive, when Ryan Casey tackled the ball carrier in the end zone for a safety putting TMP up 16-0 with just under four minutes left in the first half.

Sophomore running back Jackson Gillespie broke onto the scoreboard for the Monarchs on their next offensive drive, scoring his first of three rushing touchdowns in the first half, from six yards out with just under two minutes left in the opening frame for a 22-0 TMP lead.

He also added touchdowns of five yards and 27 yards in the second quarter, sandwiched around the Baalmann 42-yard score as TMP built a 43-0 lead with just under five minutes left in the first half.

After the Gillespie touchdown, TMP's Easton Werth forced a fumble and then returned it 22 yards for a score with the extra point making it 50-0 TMP with four minutes and 44 seconds left in the first half.

With the running clock in the second half, Stanton County kept the ball for the entire third quarter and broke into the endzone as time expired in the quarter making it 50-7 and that would be the final score.

TMP finished with 341 total yards of offense. Logan Baalmann recorded his first 100-yard rushing game with 136 yards. Jackson Gillespie added 80 yards and three touchdowns.

Hays held Garden City to just two yards in the first half while scoring two touchdowns of their own for a 14-0 lead at halftime. Neither team managed to score in the first quarter. Hays fumbled on their first play of the game following a run to midfield, but the Indian defense forced a Buffalo punt three plays later.

Hays found a groove on offense in the second quarter when Ian McGuire punctuated a 9 play 79 yard drive of all rushes with a 16 yard score. Carson Moore made the score 7-0.&nbsp;

Hays lost the ball on the next punt return. The defense this time got the ball back on four plays and turnover on downs. Carter Graham found Jarek Purdy for a one handed 41 yard catch on third down to keep the ensuing Indian drive going. Holden Lind scored from three yards out for a 14-0 lead after the Moore extra point.

The first half saw Garden City lose both their starting quarterback and running back.

Hays started the first four possessions of the third quarter in Garden City territory and capitalized on all four. Ian McGuire scored the first of the four touchdowns with a three yard plunge. The next two touchdowns started with the passing arm of Graham as he found Johnny Cano for a 27 yard score and then McGuire from six yards out. Zane Viegra finished the scoring with a seven yard scamper that was set up by a Kamani Jones interception and long return.

The lone touchdown for Garden City came on a 23 yard pass with 4:14 left in the fourth quarter for the final 41-8.

The margin of victory was the largest for Hays in the series with Garden City. The previous high was 27 points which occurred on two occasions, including the first ever game played between the two in 1958.

Ian McGuire ran for 167 yards and two scores. Carter Graham threw for 92 yards on eight completions and two scores.

Hays improves to 2-2, 1-0. Garden City drops to 1-3, 0-1.&nbsp;

Alfred J. “Al” Leiker, Jr., 84, Catharine, died Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at his home.

He was born September 25, 1940 in Hays, the son of Alfred J. “A.J.” and Ottilia “Tillie” (Staab) Leiker. Al graduated from Bishop Ward High School in Kansas City in 1958. In 1960, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in active duty until 1964, attaining the rank of Corporal. He was a data processing manager at Koch Industries and retired as a data warehouse manager at Fort Hays State University. Al was very witty, could build almost anything, always kept a large garden, loved dancing and cooking, making the best popcorn and bacon, and was a great baseball and basketball coach.

Survivors include two daughters, Laura Manning of Wichita and Lisa Westmoreland and husband J.B. of Tulsa, OK, a son, Nick Leiker and wife Dianne of Valley Center, a brother, Derald Leiker and wife Carol, two sisters, Joyce Crane and Patricia Vandenberg and husband Harold, seven grandchildren, Mikayla and Isaiah Lewis, Zachariah Westmoreland and wife Brandy, Karis Manning, Kennady Westmoreland, and Randi and Braden Leiker, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Alfred J. “Joe” Leiker III, and a brother-in-law, Robert Crane.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, October 4, 2024 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, with Pastor Chad Pritchett officiating. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will follow in the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at WaKeeney. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Thursday and from 10:00 am until service time on Friday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Toys for Tots. The Hays USD 489 approved the construction of a new concession stand/bathroom building for the new middle school/JV field at Monday's meeting.

Vogts Construction will be the contractor for the project, which will cost $753,700. HTK Architects will receive $68,700 for design, bidding and construction administration.

"This is a project we've been talking about for a while and a project that is long overdue," Superintendent Ron Wilson said.

The high school is currently using the field as a practice field. However, the middle school will move into the former high school building when the new high school is completed.

That field will also used for soccer practice and games, as well as middle school band practice.

There are no bathrooms available for that field now. When it is used, people usually have to use restrooms inside of the high school, which is "quite a haul," Wilson said.

The district budgeted $800,000 for the structure from its capital outlay fund.

Local school groups can run and keep the funds sold at the concession stand. When the high school leases Lewis Field at Fort Hays State University, it receives none of the proceeds from the concessions.

Wilson said a new concession stand is also part of the new varsity high school field, and school groups will also be able to benefit from sales at that location.

The middle school building will not be a storm shelter.

Board member Derek Yarmer said he had concerns with the project's cost.&nbsp;

He asked why the middle school students couldn't use the high school varsity field.

Wilson said the varsity field will be used for high school practice and games almost every night.

"I don't think it's that expensive," Wilson said. "The second thing is, I take a lot of pride in how our facilities look, and I think our community does as well. I don't think this is extraordinary in any way. It has no architectural features in any way. It's just brick."

Yarmer said he thought the building should have been metal.

He suggested that any money saved on this building could be used to improve the other district schools being renovated as part of the bond projects.

Board member Ken Brooks said he did not think the district would save significant money by building a metal building instead of a brick building.

Yarmer said, "It's a building that gets used a handful of times per year that has no academic value to the students."

"You're spending three-quarters of a million dollars on a place to tinkle," he said. "It seems like a bad use of funds."

The building will be on the northwest side of the field on the home side.&nbsp;

Board member Allen Park said he was also concerned about the project's cost.&nbsp;

Board Vice-President Jayme Goetz said during the Maroon and Gold Scrimmage, two women in their 70s had to be driven across the parking lot to the high school because the field did not have accessible bathrooms.

The motion to approve the project passed 4-3, with Yarmer, Park and Board President Curt Vajnar voting against it.

Wilson said the district hoped to have the building finished for use by the time spring sports begin.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Dolores Mae
(Allen) Poyser, age 90, of Alma, Nebraska, formerly of Orleans, passed away
Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at the Good Samaritan Society Colonial Villa in
Alma.&nbsp; Dolores was born April 24, 1934 in
rural Densmore, Kansas, the third of three children to Ralph and Opal (Brady)
Allen. She attended grade school in Densmore and Prairie View, Kansas and
graduated from Prairie View with the class of 1952.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; On December 28,
1952, she was united in marriage to Keith Poyser at the First Christian Church,
Philipsburg, Kansas. To this union three children were born: Keanna, Debra, and
Craig. Dolores worked in the Norton County Hospital and the Phillips County
Hospital until 1955. In 1956, after Keith’s discharge from the service, Dolores
and Keith moved to the Poyser family farm located south of Orleans, Nebraska.
She enjoyed working alongside Keith on the farm. In 1970, they moved to Orleans
and she worked at the Harlan County Hospital. Then in 1974, she started working
at Becton Dickson and Company, retiring after 20 years of service.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; After retirement,
Dolores and Keith ran their own lawn care service. Dolores was an active member
of the Orleans United Presbyterian Church helping with many funerals. She was a
member of the Harold Morin American Legion Post #184 Auxiliary and a very active
member of Al-Anon Fellowship group in Orleans for 40 years. Dolores and Keith
devoted many hours helping those in need. &nbsp;They also loved to go antiquing and just
taking drives around the country side.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Dolores’ true joy
was her family. She loved making their favorite foods and keeping up with all
their accomplishments. Dolores was also well known around the community for her
love of people. She was happiest when working around family and friends.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She was proceeded
in death by her parents; her husband of nearly 65 years; two brothers: &nbsp;Max Allen and his wife Verlene; and Ted Allen
and his wife Marilyn; in-laws, Arlan and Norma (Poyser) Butterfield; and Harry
and Mary Lou (Poyser) Hopson.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Those left to
cherish her life include her three children: Keanna Leonard and her husband, Dennis
of Grand Island, Nebraska; Debra Miller and her husband, Barry of Hays, Kansas;
and Craig Poyser and his wife, Shirlee of Alma; six grandchildren: Briana Cudly

 </figure>BY:&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/author/shauneen-miranda/">SHAUNEEN MIRANDA</a>&nbsp;The Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, laid out more of her economic vision Wednesday during her first one-on-one cable TV interview.Harris and former President Donald Trump, the GOP presidential nominee, are laying out&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/taxes-where-do-trump-and-harris-stand" target="_blank">dueling economic agendas</a>&nbsp;this week as the two vie for the Oval Office in an extremely close race.“I really love and am so energized by what I know to be the spirit and character of the American people — we have ambition, we have aspirations, we have dreams, we can see what’s possible, we have an incredible work ethic, but not everyone has the access to the opportunities that allow them to achieve those things, but we don’t lack for those things, but not everyone gets handed stuff on a silver platter,” Harris told MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle.“My vision for the economy — I call it an opportunity economy — is about making sure that all Americans — wherever they start, wherever they are — have the ability to actually achieve those dreams and those ambitions, which include, for middle-class families, just being able to know that their hard work allows them to get ahead,” she said.Earlier on Wednesday,&nbsp;<a href="https://penncapital-star.com/election-2024/harris-touts-economic-plans-in-pittsburgh-the-best-way-to-predict-the-future-is-to-invent-it/" target="_blank">Harris touted her economic plans</a>&nbsp;in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at Carnegie Mellon University. During her MSNBC interview later in the day, she reiterated her plan to cut taxes for more than 100 million Americans, including $6,000 in tax relief for new parents in the first year of their child’s life.In that first year, Harris said these parents are going to “need help buying a crib, buying a car seat, and we all benefit when they’re actually able to do what they naturally want to do to take care of their child.”Part of her economic agenda also includes as much as $25,000 in down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers and an up to $50,000 tax break for first-time small businesses.She also took jabs at Trump when it comes to the economy, saying he’s “just not very serious about how he thinks about some of these issues.”The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.donaldjtrump.com/news/8760cee3-7340-4dcc-9fc5-3457aa5953bd" target="_blank">Trump campaign</a>&nbsp;clapped back at her MSNBC appearance on Wednesday, saying “it was (another) reminder why she never does interviews,” and that she’s “not competent enough — and she has no plans to offer Americans.”Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://georgiarecorder.com/2024/09/24/trump-pitches-economic-plan-in-savannah-while-insulting-democrats-praising-kemp/" target="_blank">pitched his economic plan</a>&nbsp;earlier this week in Georgia, part of which includes levying tariffs on exported goods, and he vowed to place a 100% tariff on cars imported from Mexico.<h2>Harris to visit southern border&nbsp;</h2>Harris also touched on immigration, telling Ruhle “we do have a broken immigration system, and it needs to be fixed.”She also said she would bring back and sign into law a major&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/bleak-future-immigration-action-after-us-senate-gop-abandons-border-security-deal" target="_blank">bipartisan border security bill</a>&nbsp;from earlier this year while pinning its legislative failure on Trump.“He killed a bill that would have actually been a solution because he wants to run on a problem instead of fixing the problem, and that’s part of what needs to be addressed,” Harris said.The veep is set to visit the U.S.-Mexico border on Friday for the first time since becoming the Democratic nominee. Her Douglas, Arizona, visit comes as she’s faced repeated criticism and backlash from both sides of the aisle for her efforts surrounding immigration.In a&nbsp;<a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/113193502568945796" target="_blank">Truth Social post</a>&nbsp;earlier this week regarding her upcoming visit, Trump again dubbed Harris a “border czar,” saying “what a disgrace that she waited so long, allowing millions of people to enter our Country from prisons, mental institutions, and criminal cells all over the World, not just South America, many of those coming are terrorists, and at a level never seen before!”President Joe Biden&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/what-know-about-vice-president-kamala-harris-endorsed-biden-his-successor" target="_blank">tapped Harris back in 2021</a>&nbsp;to help address the “root causes” of migration in Central America, but he&nbsp;<a href="https://www.factcheck.org/2024/08/trump-tv-ad-repeats-false-border-czar-illegal-immigration-claims/" target="_blank">did not give her</a>&nbsp;the title of “border czar.” The Department of Homeland Security is in charge of border security.<h2>What’s next for Harris, Trump campaigns</h2>Harris was set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday afternoon.The meeting between the two leaders “serves as a reminder that the Vice President has been a champion for the United States, advancing our security and prosperity on the world stage and standing up to dictators and autocrats,” her campaign said in a Thursday press release.This will be her seventh meeting with Zelenskyy, according to her campaign, which noted that as vice president, “she helped rally a global coalition of 50 allies and partners to help Ukraine defend itself.”Trump is set to deliver remarks in Walker, Michigan, on Friday. Later in the day, he will also host a town hall in Warren, Michigan.And in the thick of the college football season, Trump is set to attend the Alabama-Georgia football game on Saturday in Tuscaloosa, the University of Alabama&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/trump-says-jewish-voters-would-be-partly-blame-election-loss" target="_blank">confirmed to States Newsroom last week</a>.Harris’ running mate, Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, is set to attend the Michigan-Minnesota football game Saturday in Ann Arbor, the Harris-Walz campaign announced.He’s also slated to campaign there and will “speak with students about the power of their vote and the importance of registering to vote ahead of the November election,” per the announcement.
