A Garden City man was arrested in Hays following a report of a suspicious person dressed in all black.

According to Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler, a records check revealed that 31-year-old Oscar Salazar had stolen a van near the Garden City High School.

At around 12:30 p.m., the police department received a call about a suspicious man in a black sweatshirt and black pants walking in circles in the 1500 block of Commerce Parkway.

Officers found Salazar, who initially claimed he had run out of gas. Officers conducted a records check. According to Scheibler, Salazar later admitted to stealing the van, which had been unlocked and running.

Salazar was arrested on a charge of possession of stolen property and was booked into the Ellis County Jail.

The TMP-Marian Monarchs return to Mid-Continent League play Tuesday night when they host the Trego Golden Eagles at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.&nbsp;

The girls' game will tip off at 6&nbsp;p.m. from Hays, and the boys will follow on the Monarchs Sports Network.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team had a student-athlete earn the MIAA Field Athlete of the Week honor for a fourth time this season, with Nolan Churchman&nbsp;picking up the most recent honor announced Tuesday.

Churchman moved to third on the NCAA Division II national performance list with a total of 5,324 points in the heptathlon at the Washburn Open last weekend (Jan. 31-Feb. 1), placing first at the event. The senior collected over 800 points in three disciplines, including 868 points in the 60m dash with a time of 7.04, 813 points with a personal-best clearance of 15-4.25 in the pole vault and 804 points in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.74. His total is the best performance in the heptathlon by an MIAA competitor this season.

This is the second time Churchman has been named MIAA Field Athlete of the Week, with the Saint George, Kan. native also earning the distinction in December of 2021.Fort Hays State is the only school to receive a field weekly honor from the conference office after pole vaulter Jacob Clark&nbsp;received the first three recognitions of the season.

The Tigers will send a small number of pole vaulters to the Steve Miller Invitational in Manhattan, Kan. this Friday before the rest of the team returns to action next weekend at the 10th Annual Russ Jewett Indoor Gorilla Classic in Pittsburg, Kan.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team has shifted its schedule for the weekend due to forecasted low temperatures, announced Tuesday .

The Tigers and East Central will now battle in a pair of doubleheaders beginning Friday at 1 p.m. before concluding the series on Saturday beginning at noon.

Fort Hays State is 2-2 on the year, while East Central is 0-3 so far this season with a game against Rogers State scheduled for this afternoon. FHSU is 4-4 all-time against ECU, with all eight of those games being played in Oklahoma. This is East Central's first trip to Hays in program history.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⚾ Tigers alter weekend schedule

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team held steady at No. 8 in this week's WBCA Division II Coaches Poll while moving up five spots to No. 17 in the latest release of the D2CSC Media Poll, both released Tuesday.

Now 18-2 on the year, Fort Hays State accumulated 393 points in the voting process, 40 points behind eighth-ranked Texas-Tyler. The top eight spots in the poll remained unchanged from last week.

This is the fifth time in program history that the Tigers have been ranked No. 8 in the coaches poll. The Tigers are now 6-0 when ranked eighth in the country, including a 4-0 record in home games.

Fort Hays State is 175-45 all-time when ranked in the coaches poll, including a 122-26 mark when ranked inside the top 10. The Tigers have now been listed in the poll 115 times, including 75 appearances in the top 10.

The Tigers climbed five spots in the media poll after moving from fourth to third in the D2CSC Central Region Rankings. FHSU is one of four teams in the region with only two losses on the year, joined by Pittsburg State, Concordia-St. Paul and Southwest Minnesota State.

Pittsburg State remains the only other MIAA program recognized in the national polls, with the Gorillas holding steady at No. 6 in the coaches poll and No. 5 in the media ranks.

The Tigers will return to Gross Memorial Coliseum for the first time in nearly three weeks on Thursday when FHSU hosts Northeastern State beginning at 5:30 p.m.

🏀 FHSU women hold steady in coaches poll, up in media ranks

Despite a road win at Great Bend, the Hays High girls’ basketball
team dropped two spots to No. 4 in the latest 5A rankings released Tuesday
afternoon from the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association. Topeka Seaman remains
No. 1 with St. James Academy moving up seven spots to No. 2. Andover holds at
No. 3.

The Hoxie girls moved up a spot to No. 6 in Class 2A with
Oakley in this week’s poll at No. 10.

The Quinter girls held steady at No. 7 in 1A Division 1, Wheatland-Grinnell
is 10th in the 1A Division 2 poll.

The Great Bend boys held at No. 4 in Class 5A, Logan-Palco remained

🏀 HHS girls drop two spots in latest KBCA rankings

The Ellis County emergency manager presented a report on disaster preparedness to the Ellis County Commission on Tuesday.

Lyle Pantle, Ellis County emergency manager, presented a document aligned with the Kansas Planning Standards. These standards are updated every five years to maintain Ellis County's disaster preparedness.

Pantle said a recent update to the document includes the addition of an emergency operations mapper, which can assist external agencies during a disaster.

A formal review of the plan was approved.

Ellis County Fair Board President Justin Scheck discussed updated rental agreements for the rodeo grounds.

The updated rental agreements specify fees of $100 for up to four hours or $200 per day for arena use, $15 per night for stall rentals and $25 per day per camper for hookup and electrical use.

"Some of the people who use the rodeo arena said that if we raise it to $200 per day, they're probably not gonna use it," Scheck said.

Scheck proposed temporarily reducing the per-day fee to encourage groups like the Fort Hays State University club to continue using the facility rather than seeking alternatives.

The contract was approved to update the fee to $75 for four hours and $150 for a full day, with an annual review.

The other rental agreements remained the same.&nbsp;

During the past few years, the Ellis County Commission has upgraded aging HVAC systems in several county facilities. Glassman Corporation was the contractor on a project to upgrade equipment at the administrative building.

Glassman submitted the project for an award for energy efficiency.

Joe Glassman with Glassman Corporation presented the Associated General Contractors State of Kansas Building Award of Honor to the commission on Tuesday.

Ellis County Clerk Bobbi Dreiling signed off on the annual Ellis County townships' financial reports.

NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team climbed to No. 20 in the latest U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II National Rating Index, released Tuesday.

Senior sprinter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/hayden-albright/8477">Hayden Albright</a>&nbsp;has emerged as one of the top athletes in the MIAA, securing NCAA provisional qualifying marks in three events. Including the 60-meter dash (6.83), 200-meter dash (21.39), and 400-meter dash (47.93). Notably, Albright is the only athlete in the conference to achieve provisional standards in all three events.

In the field events,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/jacob-clark/8482">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;continues to make an impact in the pole vault, ranking fourth in Division II after clearing 17-2.75 earlier this indoor season. Multi-event standouts&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/nolan-churchman/8479">Nolan Churchman</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/ethan-salmans/8502">Ethan Salmans</a>&nbsp;are among the nation's top heptathlon competitors. Churchman made a statement last weekend by winning the event in Topeka, Kan., and now holds the third-best mark in Division II this season.

As a team, the Tigers are currently ranked seventh in the Central Region and sixth in the MIAA. Fort Hays State boasts four event groups ranked in the top 20 of the USTFCCCA event squad rankings, highlighted by the pole vault unit, which ranks third nationally, and the 200-meter group, which sits at sixth.

The pole vaulters will look to improve their marks this Friday (Feb. 7) at the Steve Miller Invitational while the men's team will look towards the 10th Annual Russ Jewett Indoor Gorilla Classic to improve their indoor marks. This event will be held in Pittsburg, Kan. and will be a two day event (Feb. 14-15).&nbsp;&nbsp;

The new American Legion Post 173 is designed to serve the Hays community by providing a space for small gatherings.

The building, 5025 General Hays Road., is available for rent and can accommodate up to 99 people. It also provides tables and chairs for various events.

Harvey Jansonius, a member of the American Legion Post in Hays, said the new facility is designed to serve the community's next generation.

"It's not your grandpa's American Legion or your dad's American Legion. It's ours," Jansonius said.

The building measures 40 by 60 feet, with part of the space designated for offices, restrooms and a planned kitchenette. The Legion does not offer food or catering services, leaving renters responsible for their own arrangements.

There are plans for future Wi-Fi in the building.

The facility does not have a bar or kitchen, but renters may bring their own alcohol and must handle the required permits and liabilities.

The facility rents for $300 per day, with a $200 refundable deposit if it is left clean. For rental availability, contact Jansonius at 785-623-8468 or American Legion Post member Jay Pfeifer at 785-432-1965.

"In our community, everybody had monster weddings," Pfeifer said. "Those aren't so big anymore, so we thought the need was for a smaller venue like the one we have here."&nbsp;

American Legion Post 173 offers tables, chairs, and a podium for meetings, anniversaries, graduations, birthdays and veteran-related events.

Rental funds directly support veterans and community programs, including gas, hotel stays, food for veterans, youth sponsorships and high school awards.

The building has received rental interest but was unavailable until city occupancy approval was granted.

"We have turned down many people, but now we're ready to roll," Pfeifer said.

The American Legion Post is operated by volunteers and veterans, with support from groups such as the American Legion Riders, Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.

American Legion Post 173 opens new venue for rent in Hays

ELLIS COUNTY—Two people were&nbsp; injured in an accident just before 4 a.m. Monday in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Volvo semi driven by&nbsp;Abdikarim J.&nbsp;Muse, 25, Minneapolis, Minnesota, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of 380th Avenue. The semi left the roadway to the south, crossed the median, overturned and came to rest on its driver's side blocking both eastbound lanes of Interstate 70. 

An eastbound 2016 GMC Sierra driven by Derek A&nbsp; Miller, 35, Clarksville, Tennessee,&nbsp;collided with the overturned semi.&nbsp;

EMS transported&nbsp;Muse and Miller to Hays Medical Center. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

2 hospitalized in Hays after semi overturns on I-70

Donna M. Kirkpatrick Pinson, age 67, of Cherry Valley,
Illinois passed away on January 30, 2025. She was born October 13, 1957 to
Kathlene Houpt in Hays, Kansas. Donna married the love of her life, Stoney
Pinson, on June 21, 1985. 

She received a Bachelor’s degree in English from Fort Hays
State University, as well as three Master’s degrees in Communication, Education
Administration, and School and Community Agency, and a Doctorate in Counselor
Education and Supervision from Northern Illinois University. She was a
Counselor for many years in the Byron School District and at National Louis
University. She was named the Illinois Middle School Counselor of the Year by
the Illinois School Counselor Association in 2010. From 2011 to 2013 she was an
editorial board member of the Journal of Counseling in Illinois. Dr.
Kirkpatrick Pinson was the Secretary of the Illinois Association for Adult
Development and Aging and the Co-Treasurer and board member for the Schultz
Foundation for Advancing. She was also a member of the Illinois Counseling
Association and the American Counseling Association. 

Donna found joy in life through reading, teaching, and
counseling students. She enjoyed puzzles and word games. Most of all, Donna
loved to help people, she dedicated her life to furthering research in
counseling, ethics, and chronic disease.

Donna is survived by her husband of 39 years, Stoney Pinson;
mother, Kathlene Perrigo;&nbsp; brother,
Edward Kirkpatrick; nephews, Trey and Trent Kirkpatrick; and special
sister-in-law, Ronda Pinson.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Donna's memory may be
made to National MS Society, nationalmssociety.org; and Multiple Sclerosis
Society of America, DonorRelations@mymsaa.org.

 </figure>Donna M. Kirkpatrick Pinson, age 67, of Cherry Valley,
Illinois passed away on January 30, 2025. She was born October 13, 1957 to
Kathlene Houpt in Hays, Kansas. Donna married the love of her life, Stoney
Pinson, on June 21, 1985. She received a Bachelor’s degree in English from Fort Hays
State University, as well as three Master’s degrees in Communication, Education
Administration, and School and Community Agency, and a Doctorate in Counselor
Education and Supervision from Northern Illinois University. She was a
Counselor for many years in the Byron School District and at National Louis
University. She was named the Illinois Middle School Counselor of the Year by
the Illinois School Counselor Association in 2010. From 2011 to 2013 she was an
editorial board member of the Journal of Counseling in Illinois. Dr.
Kirkpatrick Pinson was the Secretary of the Illinois Association for Adult
Development and Aging and the Co-Treasurer and board member for the Schultz
Foundation for Advancing. She was also a member of the Illinois Counseling
Association and the American Counseling Association. Donna found joy in life through reading, teaching, and
counseling students. She enjoyed puzzles and word games. Most of all, Donna
loved to help people, she dedicated her life to furthering research in
counseling, ethics, and chronic disease.Donna is survived by her husband of 39 years, Stoney Pinson;
mother, Kathlene Perrigo;&nbsp; brother,
Edward Kirkpatrick; nephews, Trey and Trent Kirkpatrick; and special

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State baseball senior Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;was named MIAA Hitter of the Week for the opening weekend of the 2025 season, announced Monday by the league office.

The first baseman opened the new year with a bang, compiling a league-high four home runs, 11 RBI, seven runs, 19 total bases and a slugging percentage of 1.583 in four games against Adams State. He is tied for first in Division II in RBI, ranks second in the country in home runs and slugging percentage and ranks third in total bases. Herrmann leads the team with six base hits, five of which have gone for extra bases, and is tied for the team lead with a batting average of .500.

Herrmann kicked off the season with a 3-for-4 performance in the opener on Saturday, including two home runs, one double and six RBI. The Castle Rock, Colo. native then provided a go-ahead, three-run home run in the second win over ASU on Saturday before adding another solo home run on Sunday. He is one of two players to record at least one base hit in all four games this weekend along with Brady Kreutzer.

This is the third time Herrmann has earned a weekly honor from the conference office, and the second time he has done so in the first week of the season.

Tiger baseball will return to action next weekend (Feb. 8-9) when FHSU hosts East Central in another non-conference series. The teams will battle in a pair of doubleheaders beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Ellis County emergency manager will present a report on disaster preparedness to the Ellis County Commission at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Lyle Pantle,&nbsp;Ellis County emergency manager, will present a document aligned with the Kansas Planning Standards. These standards are updated every few years to maintain Ellis County's disaster preparedness.

After the local review and updates are finalized, the State of Kansas will review and approve the plan before it is sent back to the Ellis County Commission for final adoption.

Ellis County Fair Board President Justin Scheck will discuss updated rental agreements for the rodeo grounds.

The fair board was also asked to provide an estimate of volunteer hours for various events throughout the year and the time spent on projects, mowing and fairground maintenance.

During the past few years, the Ellis County Commission has upgraded aging HVAC systems in several county facilities. One project, which involved upgrading equipment at the administrative building, was awarded to Glassman Corporation.

Joe Glassman with Glassman Corporation will discuss the award with the commission.

Ellis County Clerk Bobbi Dreiling will present a review of the annual Ellis County townships' financial reports.

Let me tell you about my husband, the love of
my life and best friend, Gregory “Greg” Schmidt, who passed away on January 31,
2025 after over nine years of courageously battling Glioblastoma brain cancer.
He was a devoted husband, a loving father, grandfather, big brother, uncle, and
an extraordinary person.

Greg was born at the old St. Anthony Hospital
in Hays, Kansas on July 22, 1960. He was the first born son of Emery and
Shirley (Pfeifer) Schmidt. He grew up on the family farm that he loved
northeast of Catherine where he was able to live the last year of his life. He attended Catherine
Elementary School, Hays Junior High and graduated
from Hays High School in 1978.
He attended Fort Hays State University.

After graduating from Hays High, he worked for
Rohr Wood Products for a year. On June 22, 1979, he started his 45 year career
at Cross Mfg., Inc., Hays. He began
his employment there working second shift on the production floor. Within a
couple of years, he was moved briefly to Quality Assurance, then to Production
Control Manager. He was named General Plant Manager in 1994, a position he held
until his death. Greg was respected for his hard work, dedication, and
expertise.

Greg and I were introduced by mutual friends
on March 16, 1980. He proposed to me that very summer on a summer night during
wheat harvest while sitting in an old green wheat truck in a wheat field that
we now own. We were married May 1, 1981 at St. Catherine
Church in Catharine, Kansas. I am so grateful
for the forty-three years of marriage that we were able to spend
together.

We were blessed with three sons. Eric (wife
Kelli), Hays, Ryan (wife Jennifer), Hays and Kyle, Overland Park, KS.
"Poppy" adored his
grandchildren, Catherine, Evelyn, Sophia, Jace, Mason, Colby and Elon. He loved
following them when they participated in sports, music and theater.

While he loved all his nieces and nephews, Shelby Stouffer held a special
place in his heart. He enjoyed supporting her in Cross Country and Track
through high school and college. We also share a special "adopted"
daughter with Terry and Laurie Roth.
Hannah (Dreiling) Schmidt is the daughter none of us ever had.

Greg was a member of St. Catherine
Church, Catharine. He loved our parish. He served as a past parish council member and president, and was
a sacristan for the church.
He stepped up and taught a confirmation class when the need
arose. He mowed the church and cemetery
for over 20 years. Greg helped organize
the many parish Mardi Gras and
Street Dance fund raisers. He also helped me with liturgical decorating, getting up early on Christmas, Easter and Pentecost to light the numerous candles
that were used for these special days.

He was a member of the Catherine
Knights of Columbus
Council 11687 where he served as Grand Knight and Financial Secretary. He enjoyed
stuffing the hundreds of Easter Eggs that he helped hide for the Annual K of C
Easter Egg hunt. He was also a Fourth degree member of Bishop Cunningham
Assembly 282 Knights of Columbus, Hays. He served on the Advisory Board at
Thomas More Prep-Marian. He was very involved with TMP-Marian while and after
our boys were students there. He operated the time clocks at TMP-Marian's home
football and basketball games for many years, only quitting due to his health.
He enjoyed helping his buddies, Rod Fairbank and Terry Roth cooking for TMP
tailgates, Sports Booster Club Raffle and Graduation parties for the boarding
students. He and Terry built many sets for the TMP Pop Singers Dinner Theaters.
We were ACE Auction co-hosts in 2010. We received the TMP-Marian Point of Light
award in 2012 and the Jack Schramm Spirit Award in 2020.

Greg was an avid Kansas City Royals and Kansas
City Chiefs fan. Greg enjoyed planting a large garden every year until his
health didn't allow it. He spent many
hours in the heat of the summer canning his produce. His salsa was the best. He
was a volunteer fire fighter for Company 2 in Catherine for a few years. He had
an infectious laugh especially when watching his favorite comedian, Jeff
Dunham. For whatever reason, he enjoyed watching Sponge Bob Square Pants. When
one of his hospice nurses learned this, she found it on his TV so he could
watch something he enjoyed. Every year he had to watch Scrooged at least once
during the Christmas season and Groundhog Day on Groundhog Day. We will be
watching Groundhog Day in his memory this year.

On our many trips to KUMed the last nine years, the Topeka Zoo became a place we enjoyed making
quick stops at on
our way to KUMed or on the way home. It got our minds off of worrying what his
MRI would find and rested our minds when we didn't get the best news. His favorite animal
was Vision aka "Tank" the hippopotamus. We always had to go visit Tank.

Greg will be remembered for his kind heart, his work ethic and his willingness to help others whenever he was needed and will be missed by many.

Greg is survived by me, Pam (Peter) Schmidt,
his sons and their families, sisters, Jackie Jones and husband Tim of Hays and
Lisa Stouffer and husband Allen of Leavenworth, sister-in-law, Ann Schmidt,
Catharine, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lynette and Rex Keeshan, Genoa, NE,
and many other family members and friends who already miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his
father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wane and Maxine Peter, his brother Mike
Schmidt and nephew, John Jones.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am
on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Catharine
with Fr. Earl Befort officiating. Burial
will follow in St. Catherine Cemetery. Visitation
will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday and from 8:30 am until 9:30 on
Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. The Bishop Cunningham Fourth degree Knights of Columbus will
stand honor guard from 5:30 pm until 6:30 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home. A
vigil service will be at 6:30 pm followed by a combined St. Catherine 3rd
degree Knights of Columbus and Bishop Cunningham 4th degree Knights of Columbus
rosary. 

Memorials are suggested to
St. Catherine Catholic Church, TMP-Marian High School for the Gardening Club and
Fine Arts Club, Holy Family Elementary
