Jacqui Richmeier, 63, passed away January 24, 202,&nbsp; in the comfort
of her home in Bogue, Kansas surrounded by her family. Jacqui was born July 16,
1961 in Phillipsburg, Kansas to Helen Wilson. She attended school in Logan and
received her G.E.D. before completing coursework in human growth and
development, accounting and computer science from Colby Community College
Outreach and subsequently attaining her licensure for childcare.

February 23, 1980, Jacqui married Monty Richmeier in Hill City. July 24,
2007 the couple joyfully welcomed their beautiful daughter, Michelle.

In addition to proudly working with Graham County families as a daycare
provider, Jacqui held several retail positions in the community, she was a
Graham County Fair Board member, and served as a paraprofessional at DSNWK and
postal clerk at the USPS in Hill City.

Jacqui was passionate about photography, fishing, baking, crafts,
cooking, sewing, gardening, plants, the ocean, the mountains and all animals
large and small. She loved camping, being in nature and occasionally enjoying a
frosty bottle or two of Coors Light. Most of all, she loved people. And, of
course, her absolute favorites were her beloveds: Monty and Michelle. Anyone
who knew Jacqui well understood that her greatest wish in life was to become a
mother–-and she never stopped being grateful for the daughter God brought into
their lives. She was a spiritual, free-spirited soul who showed her love of
living through making people laugh, nurturing any child as her own, planning
celebrations for others and helping people in need. She will be deeply missed by
all those she held close.

She was preceded in death by her mother Helen Wilson; grandparents, Roy
and Edna Wilson; uncle and aunt Howard and Thelma Morgan, aunt Wilma Harmon;
brother John Ginther; cousin R.D. Harmon; and many members of her animal
family.

She is survived
by her husband, Monty Richmeier; daughter, Michelle Richmeier; sister Sherida
Warner and brother-in-law &nbsp;of Grand
Junction, Colorado, “son” Michael Richmeier of Las Vegas, Nevada; “daughter”
Bridget Deenihan of Nashville, Tennessee (both of whom Jacqui and Monty helped
raise), and many beloved nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the community for
their generous support during Jacqui’s journey. They also would like to thank
the medical community of Hill City, Hays, and Kearney, Nebraska, including the
doctors, nurses, ambulatory and emergency staff, and the angels who dedicate
their lives to Hospice Care.

Her celebration
of life will be held Sunday,&nbsp; February 23, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at the Bogue
United Methodist Church. A visitation from 2 to 3 will begin at the church before
the service.&nbsp; Jacqui would have liked for
people to attend with light hearts and wearing their favorite pair of blue
jeans–or whatever feels most comfortable. Memorials to the family for medical
and funeral expenses. Stinemetz Funeral Home, Hill City is in charge of the
arrangements.

Sister Mary Rose Meis, CSA, baptized Shirley Ann, died
peacefully February 11, 2025, at Nazareth Center, Fond du Lac, WI.

&nbsp;Shirley was born November 15, 1937, in Hays, KS, the
oldest of the eight children of Servillian (Bill) and Irene Weigel Meis. The
Sisters of St. Agnes were her teachers during her first two years in elementary
school and again while attending Girls Catholic High School in Hays, KS. After
her high school graduation in 1955, she chose to enter St. Agnes Convent,
joined by her younger sister, Mary Agnes, now known as Sister Marise Meis, CSA.
Shirley made her first profession of vows in the Congregation of Sisters of St.
Agnes as Sister Mary Rose on August 15, 1958, in Fond du Lac, WI. 

&nbsp;Sister Mary Rose was a generous and devoted woman of
service, ever present and responsive to those in need. She spent her life as an
educator and serving in leadership roles for her CSA community.&nbsp; She earned her BS in Education in 1962 from
Marian College, Fond du Lac, WI, and her MA in Elementary Administration in
1974 from Loras College, Dubuque, IA. She enhanced these degrees with ongoing
educational and theological courses throughout her years in ministry. 

&nbsp;Sister was an elementary school teacher and principal
in parish schools in WI and IN from 1959 to 1986.&nbsp; She took a pause from her educational
ministry in 1986 to serve as a Regional Coordinator for her CSA community,
supporting the personal, professional, communal, and spiritual needs of her
sisters. Upon the completion of her term in 1990, Sister Mary Rose accepted the
position as principal of St. Mary’s School in Jackson, MS, serving the needs of
the African American children and their families for eight years. 

&nbsp;After a year of sabbatical in 1999, Sister Mary Rose
accepted roles of service for her community: Local Coordinator at Nazareth
Court and Center, the CSA retirement center (2000-2009); CSA Motherhouse
Administrator (2010-2019).

&nbsp;Sister retired from these congregational
responsibilities in 2019. She remained a familiar face in the local Fond du Lac
community attending many justice and peace events. She was a key person in the
Clean Your Closet for Cantera sales that raised funds for the ministry of the
sisters in Nicaragua. Sister Mary Rose spent countless hours volunteering with
Stone Soup, Ebony Vision, United for Diversity, the Senior Center, the Fond du
Lac Center for Spirituality and Healing, Agnesian HealthCare Grief Relief, ASTOP,
the Simple Blessings Gift Store operated by St. Francis Home and CSA sponsored
activities. She was a faithful supporter of Marian University assisting with
many of their special events.&nbsp; She also
truly enjoyed being a member of the Red Hat Society. Her struggle with dementia
and subsequent declining health led her to become a resident at Nazareth Court
and Center in February 2024. There she received loving care until the time of
her death. 

&nbsp;Preceding Sister Mary Rose in death were her parents
and her sisters, Yvonne Rodriguez, and Geraldine Henning.

&nbsp;Sister is survived by her sisters, Sister Marise Meis,
CSA, Katherine (Jeff) Plank, Christine Hadley; her brothers, Father Peter Meis,
OFM Cap., Michael Meis; her brother-in-law, Richard Henning; her nieces and
nephews and their families, and the Sisters of St. Agnes with whom she lived,
prayed, and ministered.

&nbsp;All services for Sister Mary Rose will be held on
Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

&nbsp;Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. —11:00 a.m. and
12:00 —1:30 p.m. at Nazareth Court and Center, 375 Gillett Street, Fond du Lac,
WI.

&nbsp;A Prayer Service in honor of Sister Mary Rose will be
held at 11:00 a.m. in Nazareth Center Chapel, 375 Gillett Street, Fond du Lac,
WI.

&nbsp;The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be offered at
2:00 p.m. in St. Francis Home Chapel, 33 Everett Street, Fond du Lac, WI, with
Father Carl Diederichs presiding. 

&nbsp;Burial will follow in St. Joseph Springs Cemetery,
Fond du Lac, WI.

Fort Hays State begins a quick two-game road swing in Kansas this week with Emporia State on Thursday night. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at White Auditorium. The Tigers enter at 15-7 overall, 8-5 in the MIAA, while the Hornets are 8-15 overall, 5-9 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State is coming off a pair of wins at home this past week over Northeastern State and Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Tigers held their opponents to an average of 50.5 points last week, lowering their nation's leading scoring defense to 58.6 points per game. The Tigers are the only team in NCAA Division II holding teams to an average of less than 60.Emporia State is coming off a road win at Missouri Southern last Saturday. The Hornets have won four of their last six games and the two losses in that stretch were by six or less points.

Fort Hays State won the first meeting this season with Emporia State by a score of 69-44 in Hays back on January 9. It was one of seven games this season FHSU held an opponent to 50 or less points. Kaleb Hammeke broke the career scoring record at FHSU in that game with 12 points, passing Alonzo Goldston (1,766 pts). Hammeke is now at 1,883 points. Dan Makuna&nbsp;led the Tigers in scoring that evening with 16 points, while Kyle Grill&nbsp;also reached double figures with 10 points. Malik Edwards was the top scorer for ESU with 10 points.

🏀🎧 LISTEN: FHSU men begin in-state road trip in Emporia Thursday night

#7/15 Fort Hays State (20-2, 11-2 MIAA) at Emporia State (9-14, 4-10 MIAA) Thursday, February 13, 2025 • 5:30 p.m. Emporia, Kan. • White Auditorium

The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team hits the road for a pair of in-state matchups this weekend beginning Thursday (Feb. 13) when the Tigers take on Emporia State. Tipoff from White Auditorium in Emporia, Kan. is set for 5:30 p.m.

The contest between the Tigers and Lady Hornets is being played one day later than originally planned due to the winter weather in the area on Wednesday.

Fort Hays State moved to 20-2 on the year with its win over Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday, giving the Tigers at least 20 wins for the 14th season in a row. That streak is the longest active streak of 20-win seasons in Division II and is tied for fifth best across all NCAA divisions. The next-best active stretch of 20-win seasons in the MIAA is three (MWSU, MSSU, PSU), while the next-best streak in DII is Drury with 11.

Only four DI programs have longer active stretches of 20-win seasons, including UConn (32), Baylor (25), Stanford (23) and Florida Gulf Coast (21). Fort Hays State's run of 14-straight 20-win seasons is tied with Louisville, South Carolina and South Dakota State for fifth best in all NCAA women's basketball.

The Tigers currently sit in second place in the&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/TheMIAA/status/1888996563986375127">MIAA's KPI Index</a>, which will be used for seeding for the 2025 MIAA Championship. The Tigers have a rating of .165, slightly behind Missouri Western at .177 and just in front of Pittsburg State at .160. This rating system assigns point values to wins and losses based on opponent, location, score margin, etc.

18 of FHSU's 20 wins have been by double figures, including 11 victories by 20 or more points, while both of the Tigers' losses have been by just one point. That has helped FHSU to a scoring margin of plus-18.6, ninth-best in Division II. The Tigers also rank in the top 10 in DII in assist/turnover ratio (1.37, second), assists per game (19.0, third), field goal percentage (46.4, sixth) and winning percentage (.909, tenth).

Brooke Loewe&nbsp;has distributed 153 assists this season, already third-most in a single season in program history. At her current pace of 7.3 assists per game, the junior could break the school record of 166 assists (Kristi Leeper-Meis, 1990-91) this weekend. That total ranks second in the country and tops in the MIAA.

Olivia Hollenbeck leads the Tigers and ranks third in the conference with an average of 17.0 points per game. The graduate student picked up her second MIAA Athlete of the Week honor last week after averaging 24.5 points on 76.0 percent shooting in home wins over Northeastern State and Arkansas-Fort Smith. Currently with 1,777 career points, the Lincoln, Neb. native needs 14 points to move into fourth on the all-time scoring list at FHSU. On a cold Tuesday morning in late January, a van full of freshman pre-med students and several professors from Fort Hays State University (FHSU) made the nearly three-hour journey to Wichita for a much-anticipated campus visit to the Kansas Health Science University&nbsp; – Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (KHSU – KansasCOM).

Eligible for the new admissions partnership agreement between FHSU and KHSU – KansasCOM, a program designed to help address Kansas’ physician shortage, these students were able to get an in-depth look at what the KHSU – KansasCOM campus had to offer.

After an initial meet and greet with KHSU – KansasCOM admissions team members, students were given a tour of the facilities, starting with a chance to engage with the state-of-the-art virtual equipment in the HoloAnatomy lab. Students had the opportunity to try out augmented reality devices that bring the college's library of 3D anatomical structures to life in ways that allowed for interactive examination of the structures inside a physical space.

“What most impressed me during the visit was how technologically focused the entire medical&nbsp;school was,” said Ella Coloson, FHSU freshman biology major. “The cadaver lab headsets were definitely&nbsp;the most impressive and I love the idea of allowing students to still be able to learn anatomy without the smell of formaldehyde. This is especially nice for students who aren't necessarily looking to be surgeons.”

Students then toured the Simulation Center, a 22,000-square-foot clinical learning center. This space is designed to model a variety of environments, including a hospital room wing and an outpatient wing that is set up like a clinic or doctor’s office. 

These spaces allow KHSU – KansasCOM&nbsp;students access to cutting-edge technological resources to bolster their program experience and improve their ability to discover techniques for optimal patient care.

The FHSU students finished their tour with an in-depth question and answer session held in the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) Lab. Here, the students learned more about their options, including the traditional path into medical school, which consists of acquiring their four-year bachelor's degree, taking the MCAT exam, and applying to&nbsp;KHSU – KansasCOM during that final year. Alternatively, students learned how to plan for and apply to the new partnership program.

The FHSU and KHSU – KansasCOM partnership agreement allows select Fort Hays State University students to accelerate their career path with a 3+4 program. Qualified students who meet admission requirements can begin their first year of medical school in their senior year of undergraduate studies at FHSU. After completing their first year at KHSU – KansasCOM, students will receive their bachelor’s degree from FHSU and be able to complete their medical degree in seven years.

“This partnership with KansasCOM is an exciting opportunity to support our biology pre-med students while addressing the state’s growing demand for healthcare providers,” said Dr. Claudia Carvalho, assistant professor of biology at FHSU. “Our students are eager to gain early exposure to an innovative curriculum, cutting-edge technology, and hands-on training from KansasCOM—all while completing their bachelor’s degree at Fort Hays State University.”

FHSU pre-med students explore options at Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine

Robert Ronald Powell, 87, of Vian, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully at
his home on January 31, 2025.

Born on February 27, 1937, in Dimmitt, Texas, Robert was the son of
William Dewey and Leah Levina (Alldridge) Powell. He married Phyllis Lee Thanisch,
and together they had four children: Robert L., William Dallas, Leigh Ann, and
Leila Gaye. While they were alive, they remained connected through their
children.

On August 19, 1989, Robert married the love of his life, Barbara
Ferguson. They shared 28 wonderful years together until her passing on July 24,
2017.

Robert was drafted in 1960. He proudly served in the US Army Signal Corp
for 2 years in France and Korea.

Robert dedicated much of his career to the cable industry, serving as
the manager of the cable system in Norton, Kansas, for several years before
becoming the Vice President of Operations at Karlin Communications Inc. in
Great Bend. He took pride in his work and was well-respected in the industry
before retiring.

A true jack of all trades, Robert had an incredible ability to fix
almost anything—whether home repairs, mechanics, electrical work, or even
baking in the kitchen. He was a selfless and compassionate man, always ready to
lend a hand to anyone in need. His strong sense of justice and kindness made
him steadfastly advocate for others.

Robert was also a dedicated Boy Scout leader for many years, sharing his
love of nature with his children and the young men in his troop.

In retirement, he found joy in caring for his loved ones, making quilts,
gardening, creating art, studying genealogy, and deepening his faith through
Bible study.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, William Dewey
Jr., Merton, and Clifford; a sister Norma Joyce Hutchinson; his beloved wife,
Barbara Powell; his beloved daughter, Leila Gaye; his former wife, Phyllis
Leigh Powell; and several nieces, nephews, and a great-grandchild.

He is survived by his grandson, Tony Skidmore, of the home; his
children, Robert L. (Rita) Powell of Farmington, NM; William Dallas (Jen)
Powell of Lincoln, NE; and Leigh Ann (Jonathan) McCottry of Hays, KS; as well

his home on January 31, 2025.Born on February 27, 1937, in Dimmitt, Texas, Robert was the son of
William Dewey and Leah Levina (Alldridge) Powell. He married Phyllis Lee Thanisch,
and together they had four children: Robert L., William Dallas, Leigh Ann, and
Leila Gaye. While they were alive, they remained connected through their
children.On August 19, 1989, Robert married the love of his life, Barbara
Ferguson. They shared 28 wonderful years together until her passing on July 24,
2017.Robert was drafted in 1960. He proudly served in the US Army Signal Corp
for 2 years in France and Korea.Robert dedicated much of his career to the cable industry, serving as
the manager of the cable system in Norton, Kansas, for several years before
becoming the Vice President of Operations at Karlin Communications Inc. in
Great Bend. He took pride in his work and was well-respected in the industry
before retiring.A true jack of all trades, Robert had an incredible ability to fix
almost anything—whether home repairs, mechanics, electrical work, or even
baking in the kitchen. He was a selfless and compassionate man, always ready to
lend a hand to anyone in need. His strong sense of justice and kindness made
him steadfastly advocate for others.Robert was also a dedicated Boy Scout leader for many years, sharing his
love of nature with his children and the young men in his troop.In retirement, he found joy in caring for his loved ones, making quilts,
gardening, creating art, studying genealogy, and deepening his faith through
Bible study.Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, William Dewey
Jr., Merton, and Clifford; a sister Norma Joyce Hutchinson; his beloved wife,
Barbara Powell; his beloved daughter, Leila Gaye; his former wife, Phyllis
Leigh Powell; and several nieces, nephews, and a great-grandchild.He is survived by his grandson, Tony Skidmore, of the home; his
children, Robert L. (Rita) Powell of Farmington, NM; William Dallas (Jen)

A Cold Weather Advisory has been issued for Hays and the surrounding area through Thursday morning with cold wind chills as low as -20 F. F, according to the National Weather Service in Dodge City.

Friday will be windy with winds of 30-40 with gusts of 50+ mph.

This weather could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia with prolonged  exposure.

Cold weather advisory issued for tonight, Thursday morning in Hays

Following another state-qualifying effort at its last meet, the Hays High boys’ swim team has its sights set on one of its biggest goals of the season.

The Indians, who finished second in team scoring at the Salina South meet last week and qualified yet another relay team for state, are set to compete in the Western Athletic Conference Championships Thursday in Garden City.

Even with the WAC event being the last meet to qualify for state, the swimmers told Coach Tyler to enter them in events at WAC where he thinks they can score the most points.

“We have one or two guys on the verge of qualifying individually,” Stein said. “But they all agreed to put the team first. They really want to win the WAC team title.”

Stein, a former all-state high school swimmer from Great Bend, is familiar with WAC swim programs. So he pondered for a while which events to strategically place his small squad of 11 swimmers.

Most WAC schools have much larger squads than Hays High, and “the guys know we’re underdogs coming into it. It’s going to take everyone swimming their best race for us to win it.”

Stein is confident that goal is attainable because the Indians have been turning in record-breaking performances all season long.

They have already qualified all three of their relay teams for state, senior Marshall Sook has qualified in two individual events, and the Indians have hit state-consideration times in other events as well.

“Just them having the faith in themselves that they can win WAC is big,” Stein said.

Please be advised that city of Hays crews will be removing snow from the downtown area from Oak to Fort streets and Seventh to 13th streets, Main Street from Sixth to 16th streets, and West Ninth and 10th streets in the 100 and 200&nbsp;blocks, tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 12, starting at about 10 p.m.

City crews request that cars be removed from these areas to allow the crews the ability to completely plow the street and the on-street parking areas.

Updates on the R9 long-term water supply project for Hays and Russell will be presented at Thursday's Hays City Commission meeting.

Property development, wellfield and pipeline projects and regulatory updates will be discussed.

Jeff Crispin, director of water resources, will present a bid for the replacement of the&nbsp;water reclamation (tertiary) filter at the Water Reclamation and Reuse Facility,&nbsp;1498 Highway 40 Bypass.

Crispin told city commissioners last week that there is only one filter system manufacturer, and he is confident in the product.

The bid of&nbsp;$48,087 from Evoqua Water Technologies,&nbsp;Waukesha, Wisconsin, is below the $70,000 budget.&nbsp;

Also on the agenda is Amanda Rupp, executive director of the Ellis County Historical Society, who will present the 2025&nbsp;goals for the Ellis County Historical Society.

Mayor Sandy Jacobs will present her appointment recommendations to the following boards:

R9 Ranch updates to be presented at Thursday's Hays City Commission meeting

A Hays man was arrested on Feb. 9 after he allegedly accidentally discharged a gun in Chuck's bar, 507 W. Seventh, in Hays.

Police were called to the bar at 8:27 p.m. There staff told officers a man had accidentally fired a gun in the men's restroom, according to Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler.

A round hit a toilet and went through a wall into the women's restroom, Scheibler. No injuries were reported

A 9mm handgun was reovered, Scheibler said.

Lyndon Julius Huxman, 22, of Hays was arrested on requested charges of possession of a firearm while under the influence, which is a misdemeanor, and criminal discharge of a firearm, which is a felony.

Hays man arrested after accidentally firing gun in local bar

With a winter storm warning continuing until noon Wednesday, the city of Hays officially measured 5 inches of snow by 9 a.m. at the K-State Agricultural Research Center south of town.

The snow, which began overnight Tuesday and was still falling this morning, measured 0.20 of precipitation. Another inch of snow is possible, according to the National Weather Service in Dodge City.

So far in 2025, Hays has received 0.48 of precipitation, with 14-15 inches of snowfall for the year.

The overnight low dipped to 5 degrees after a daytime high Tuesday of 17 degrees.

The <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/6d222ecc-0b47-4450-804c-ea851bc948c7">weather forecast</a> calls for another two days of cold temperatures with a high in the low 40s on Friday.&nbsp;

Emergency Snow Routes -A Declaration of Emergency Snow Routes is in effect.

Parking on designated Emergency Snow Routes is prohibited. Vehicles left on these routes may be towed at the owner’s expense.

Adolph J. Schmidt, 92, Hays, passed away on Monday, February
10, 2025. 

He was born in Catharine, KS on April 8, 1932, to Adolph and
Anna (Staab) Schmidt. He was a 1950 graduate of St. Joseph’s Military Academy
and part of the last graduating class of SJMA Junior College in 1952. On May
21, 1960, he married DeAnn Leiker at St. Francis Church in Munjor, KS. He is
survived by his wife of 64 years. 

He proudly served in the Army during the Korean War as a
Field First Sergeant at Ft. Riley, KS. He was Deputy Ellis County Treasurer,
then Ellis County Treasurer. Adolph worked for Central Kansas Power
Company/Midwest Energy as a Purchasing Manager for 35 years. He was a Sacristan
at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, assisted with funerals, served at 6:45 mass
for 28 years, and was a Eucharistic Minister for 28 years. He was a member of
the American Legion Post 173 for 70 years(!), was a volunteer for 22 years at
Hays Medical Center, and was a Knights of Columbus member, St. Mary’s
Council.&nbsp; Adolph loved playing golf,
going to coffee with friends, and watching KU, the Royals, and the Chiefs play.
He cherished his time with his grandkids.

Survivors include his wife DeAnn of Hays, his son, Andy and
wife Marie Schmidt of Olathe, KS, daughter, Joylene and husband John Kindel of
Shawnee, KS, five grandchildren, Daniel and Kelsey Kindel of Maryville, TN,
Meghan and Luke Smrt of Greenville, SC, Sam Schmidt of Kansas City, MO, Zoe and
Cole Hutchins of Overland Park, KS, and Sophie Schmidt of Lawrence, KS, two
great grandsons, Henry Fitz and William Finn Kindel of Maryville, TN, one
brother, Gerald and wife Elaine Schmidt of Hays, and his sister-in-law Rosie
Schmidt of Hays. &nbsp;Surviving in-laws are
John Leiker of Lake Worth, FL, Alan Leiker of Hays, Ella Mueggenberg of Omaha,
NE, Mark and wife Dora Leiker of Munjor, and Jane Leiker of Cedar Rapids, IA. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, two daughters,
infant daughter Katie and daughter Rachelle Schmidt, six brothers, infant
brother Elmer and brothers Celestine, Herbert (Frances), Alfred (Esther), Emery
(Shirley), Elmer, four sisters, Cyrilla (Maynard) Evans, Fidelia (Wilfred)
Rome, Irene (Ray) Dinkel and Cora (Everett) Dortland, father and mother in-law,
Henry and Regina (Kreutzer) Leiker, sisters-in-law, JoAnn (Ruder) Leiker, Janet
(Joy) Leiker and brother-in-law, Daniel H. Leiker. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Monday,
February 17, 2025 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Nick
Parker officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in
St. Joseph Cemetery with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor
Guard.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 5:00 pm
until 8:00 on Sunday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Monday, all at Hays
Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; A
Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 5:30 pm, and a vigil service will be at
6:30 pm followed by a Third Degree Knights of Columbus rosary, all on Sunday at
the funeral home.&nbsp;

The 69th-annual Ellis County Spelling Bee crowned its winner Monday, who will compete in the Kansas State Spelling competition.

Sponsored by the FHSU chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the spelling contest was Monday night at the Beach-Schmidt Auditorium.

Forty-five students from third to eighth grade and from 12 different schools in Ellis County competed to determine who would represent the county at the state level.

Eighth-grader Krister Lundberg from Hays Middle School was declared the winner after correctly spelling the word "askew."

Seventh-grader Niyah Zollinger from Hays Middle School correctly spelled "ubiquity" for second place.

Lundberg moves on to the Sunflower State Spelling Bee at Kansas Wesleyan University on March 22.

Hays Middle School eighth-grader wins Ellis County Spelling Bee

Given that we are two weeks before turnaround, the House of Representative was busy with bill introductions, hitting a whopping 130 total. Here is a small selection, 9 bills, from that very long list.

First is House Bill (HB) 2185. This legislation would enable National Guard members to transfer unused tuition assistance benefits from the Kansas National Guard Education Assistance Act to eligible dependents. Second is HB 2190, which would establish general elections on even-numbered years as public holidays.

Third is HB 2193. This bill would establish the Every Mom Matters Program in the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, which would provide information and support services to pregnant women and parents considering adoption. The fund and its contracts would be administered through the State Treasurer.

Fourth is House Bill 2205. This legislation would ban lobbying in Kansas on behalf of the Russian Federation, People’s Republic of China, Islamic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Republic of Cuba, Maduro’s Venezuela, and the new Syrian Arab Republic. The bill would also provide civil penalties for violation of said prohibition.

Fifth is HB 2210, which would establish a child tax credit under Kansas Law, the credit value per child depending on level of filing income.

Sixth is HB 2238. This bill would adjust responsibility of preparing minutes to show attendance, agenda items, tentative and final committee decision, staff instructions, and other committee matters from the Kansas Legislative Research Department to Legislative Administrative Services.

Seventh is House Bill 2274, which alters the requirements for reciprocity with other states in occupational licensing, for military members and their spouses, by removing the requirement that said military members be active service.

On Monday HAPP heard and worked on the budgets of the Attorney General, Governor’s Office, Judicial Branch, Department of Education, and Kansas Guardianship Program.Tuesday saw the committee hear and work budgets for the following: Kansas Neurological Institute, Office of Child Advocate, Parsons State Hospital and Training Center, Kansas Department of Corrections, Larned Correctional Facility, Norton Correctional Facility, Topeka Correctional Facility, Winfield Correctional Facility, Kansas State Fair, Kansas Human Rights Commission, Kansas State Treasurer, and Pooled Money Investment Board.For Wednesday House Appropriations heard and worked the budgets of Emporia State University, Kansas State University, Kansas State Extension Services and Agricultural Research Program, Kansas State Veterinary Medical Center, Wichita State University, and Kansas Department of Agriculture.On Thursday the committee worked and heard budgets for the Kansas Department of Commerce, Kansas Department of Health and Environment—Environment, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Kansas Water Office, Department of Administration, Kansas Real Estate Appraisal Board, Kansas Real Estate Commission, Kansas Board of Examiners in Optometry, Kansas Board of Hearing Examiners, Kansas Dental Board, Ellsworth Correctional Facility, Hutchinson Correctional Facility, Larned State Correctional Facility, and Kansas Office of Veterans Services.Friday witnessed House Appropriations hear and work the budgets of the Department of Children and Families, Kansas Department of Health and Environment—Health, Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services, Fort Hays State University, Pittsburg State University, El Dorado Correctional Facility, Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex, Kansas Department of Transportation, and Kansas Highway Patrol.HOUSE DELIBERATIONThe Kansas House of Representatives debated and voted on seven pieces of legislation this week. First was Tuesday with House Concurrent Resolution 5004, which amends the state constitution to add citizenship as a requirement for voting in any election. The second was on Wednesday with House Bill (HB) 2020, which requires a quarterly report from the director of division of vehicles listing the names and addresses of noncitizens that have attained driver’s licenses in said period. On Thursday the third and fourth bills were HB 2049 and 2050. HB 2049 adjusts statutes on suspension, revocation, denial, and renewal for insurance agent and public adjuster licenses and HB 2050 grants the Insurance Commissioner the ability to set some fee rates and include them in the publication of the Kansas Register. On Friday the remaining House Bills of 2029, 2042, and 2043 were debated and voted. HB 2029 would redesignate several stretches of state highway and HB 2042 and 2043 would alter further insurance law.
