Hays Mayor Shaun Musil is pleased to announce that the City of Hays has been named the recipient of a Build Kansas grant in the amount of $12.5 million for the project to develop a long-term water supply on its property in Edwards County.
Hays is undertaking the project jointly with the City of Russell which co-owns the property. The project will result in a sustainable supply of water that is estimated to last Hays and Russell for 50 years or longer.
The project is critical to the future survival of Hays and Russell as both cities have water sources that are inadequate to serve their current residents and very susceptible to the effects of drought.
The City of Hays has submitted an application for $50 million in BRIC (Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities) funding through FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). The Build Kansas grant will provide matching funds for the BRIC grant if Hays is awarded.
