After announcing student meals would be free beginning Sept. 9, Hays USD 489 on Thursday said that the change would be retroactive to the beginning of the school year.
Meals purchase at regular or reduced price beginning Aug. 26 have been reimbursed into student meal accounts, the district said in an update to parents. A la carte purchases still are being charged.
"We are thankful for this opportunity and sincerely hope our USD 489 families take advantage and benefit from this savings," the district said. "Thank you for allowing us to serve your children breakfast and lunch and supporting your local school nutrition department!"
