🏀TMP girls knock off No. 4 Phillipsburg; Boys hold off Panthers

PHILLIPSBURG – The TMP-Marian Monarchs earned a doubleheader sweep of the Phillipsburg Panthers Friday night in Phillipsburg.

Girls: TMP 44, Phillipsburg 32

The TMP Lady Monarchs (14-3, 8-1 MCL) used a 16-4 run to end the first half and open the third quarter on their way to a 44-32 upset win over the fourth ranked Panthers.

TMP’s Emilee Lane gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead only to see Phillipsburg go on a 6-0 run to take a 6-2 lead. TMP finished the first quarter on a 6-0 run of their own to take an 8-6 lead.

In a low scoring second quarter TMP extended their lead to four two different times on a Kassdi Yost field goal and again with a Jaci VonLintel field goal at the end of the first half. TMP led 14-10 at the break.

TMP opened the second half on a 10-2 run doubling up Phillipsburg 24-12. The Monarchs led by 11 through three quarters at 28-17.

With TMP leading 33-21 in the final period Sophia Balthazor and Megan Hamel combined to score seven straight putting TMP up 19, 40-21.

Phillipsburg (13-2, 8-1 MCL) was able to briefly cut the deficit to 11 but the Monarchs was able to secure the 44-32 win.

Game highlights

Megan Hamel scored all 12 of her points in the second half to lead the way for TMP. Jaci VonLintel added nine points and Kassidi Yost chipped in six points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Boys: TMP 57, Phillipsburg 44

The TMP boys used a 17-0 second run to build a first-half double-digit lead and then held off a late Phillipsburg rally on their way to the 57-44 win.

Phillipsburg opened the game with back-to-back three pointers and led TMP (14-4, 8-1 MCL) 6-2.

The Monarchs Dylan Werth scored the first four points for TMP and Gavin Unrein scored the next four but TMP still trailed 14-8 through one quarter of action.

Jackson Schulte scored 13 second quarter points sparking a 17-0 run to open the second quarter as they built a 25-14 lead. TMP led 27-20 at the break.

It was much the second in the third quarter for TMP as they outscored Phillipsburg 20-5 in the third quarter. Werth scored 10 of his game-high 25 points in the third quarter.

TMP led 47-25 through three quarter.

Phillipsburg (7-9, 4-5 MCL) outscored TMP 19-10 in the fourth quarter but the Monarchs held on for the 57-44 win.

Game Highlights

Dylan Werth scored a career-high for TMP while Jackson Schulte added 22.

The Monarchs travel to Great Bend on Tuesday.
