🎾 Vangala takes singles match, Tigers fall to RiverHawks

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Fort Hays State fell by a score of 6-1 in conference play for the second-straight day on the road, this time at Northeastern State on Saturday. Northeastern State moved to 6-4 overall, 1-1 in the MIAA, while FHSU moved to 6-8 overall, 0-4 in the MIAA.

Shreethika Vangala was the only Tiger to win a match on the day, taking the No. 1 singles matchup. After falling in the first set 6-1, Vangala rallied for a 6-3 second set win and completed the comeback with a 10-7 win in the tiebreaker set over Alisha Moldakhmetova.

Irina Alfonso nearly gave the Tigers another singles win at the No. 2 position, but fell in a decisive tiebreaking set. She took the first set 6-4 before falling in the second set by the same count. Sandra Mari Marti, ranked No. 17 in the region, took the tiebreaker 10-4. Yone Pereiro (No. 3) and Fiorella Mendez (No. 5) each took two games in each of their singles sets. Grace Unruh (No. 6) generated three games in the first set of her match, while Ines Latorre (No. 4) generated two games in the second set of her match.

Alfonso and Latorre (No. 2) had a tight doubles match, forcing a tiebreaker. Unfortunately, they came up short in a win-by-two scenario, 7-6 (9-7). The No. 1 team of Vangala and Mendez fell 6-3 and the No. 3 team of Pereiro and Unruh fell 6-0.
