Fort Hays State will look to bounce back from a pair of losses to nationally ranked opponents on Sunday when it plays host to Newman University at 4 p.m. The Tigers will enter the contest at 7-3 overall, 2-2 in the MIAA, while the Jets enter at 5-6 overall and 1-4 in the MIAA.
The Tigers fell to No. 11/11 ranked Central Oklahoma on Friday night at home, snapping their 12-game home court win streak that dated back to last season. FHSU is looking to get back on track after losing two in a row, the other loss also being to a ranked opponent after falling to No. 1/1 ranked Northwest Missouri State the previous weekend in Maryville.
Newman picked up its first conference win of the season on Friday night at Nebraska-Kearney by a score of 74-71 to snap a four-game losing skid. The Jets had five players reach double figures in scoring in that game. Stevie Strong leads the Jets in scoring for the season at 17 points per contest.
Fort Hays State has won six straight games against Newman going back to the 2019-20 season. FHSU has swept the MIAA regular season series with Newman all three years since the Jets joined the conference in 2019-20. Last season, FHSU won 82-57 in Hays and 63-60 in Wichita. Newman's last win over FHSU was a one-point 76-75 win in Wichita during the 2018-19 season. Newman has not won in Hays since the 1981-82 season as FHSU has won 16 straight meetings on its home floor. FHSU leads the all-time series with Newman 43-10 and is 25-2 against the Jets in Hays all-time.
Kaleb Hammeke has reached double figures in scoring in all 10 games for the Tigers this season and leads the team in scoring at 18.1 points per game. Elijah Nnanabu is next at 9.3 points per game, while Bjarni Jonsson and Gabe Pieschl each average at least seven per game.
