Ellis County unemployment rate steady; still low across northwest Kansas

The unemployment rate in Ellis County for April dipped only slightly from 2.2% in March to 2.1% in April.

The jobless rate across northwest Kansas remained very low at 3.1% or less. Trego County's unemployment rate dropped almost a percentage point from 3.7% to 2.9%.

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.8% in April. This is an increase from 2.7% in March and an increase from 2.7% in April 2023.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 2,000 from March. The total number of nonfarms includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 1,700 over the month, while government increased by 300.

Since April 2023, Kansas' seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 23,000. This change is due to an increase of 17,500 private sector jobs and 5,500 government jobs.
