SAN ANGELO, Texas – Fort Hays State claimed a decisive 35-14 victory over Angelo State on Thursday night (Aug. 27) in the 2026 season opener. The Tigers doubled up the Rams in total offense 440-220, scoring 28 of their 35 points in the second half after a 7-7 deadlock with the Rams at halftime.
Both offenses sputtered in finding success early as neither team scored in the first quarter. The Tigers held the Rams to just 21 yards in the opening frame.
The Rams capitalized on the first offensive mistake as an interception at the FHSU 21 returned 18 yards set up a short field. Cameron Dischler scored a 3-yard touchdown run to put ASU up 7-0 in the second quarter. However, the Tigers gashed the Rams for 16 and 59-yard passes by Major Cantrell later in the frame to set up a LaAngelo Bell 4-yard touchdown run. A PAT by Zane Colson knotted the game and it stayed that way until halftime. Keyshawn Dooley hauled in the 59-yard pass from Cantrell to set up the touchdown. The Tiger defense held the Rams to just 82 total yards in the first half.
The Tigers dominated offensively in the second half by scoring touchdowns on their first four drives after halftime. The only drive they did not score on was their final of the game as they ran out the clock on a 21-point win.
FHSU orchestrated a 78-yard drive to open the second half, capped by an AG Floyd 3-yard rushing touchdown. Later in the third quarter, Bell had a 2-yard run to finish a 41-yard drive. Fort Hays State capitalized on Angelo State's fumble, caused by Shadryon Blanka and scooped by Eli Moulton, maintaining possession for over 10 minutes in the quarter and take a 21-7 lead.
After yielding ASU's only touchdown of the second half early in the fourth quarter, Fort Hays State continued to control the ball with a long 9-play, 75-yard drive over 6:09, capped on a 17-yard pass from Cantrell to Bell. It was Bell's third touchdown of the night, putting the Tigers up 28-14. Cantrell put the game away later with a 25-yard touchdown run at the 4:10 mark to make the final 21-point spread. Moulton sealed the win for FHSU with an interception in the endzone at the 1:54 mark on the clock.
Fort Hays State will host No. 6/10 ranked CSU Pueblo in the home opener next week in Hays, set for 7 p.m. at Lewis Field on Thursday, Sept. 3.
