Vernon Delmer Roberts

Vernon Delmer Roberts passed away at Whispering Pines in Norton, Kansas, August 10, 2020. Vernon was born to Ralph and Lela Ann Roberts on October 9, 1921, in Norton County, and grew up on a farm in Belle Plaine Township.

Vernon attended schools in Norton County and worked briefly for the Conservation Corp before enlisting in the United States Army during World War II. He survived the landing at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge with Gen. Patton's 3rd Army, and remained in Europe with the Army of Occupation through 1945.

Following his discharge from the military, Vernon returned to Norton County where he began working for the Kansas Department of Transportation as an engineering technician. He also became a skilled licensed land surveyor, a job he continued to enjoy after retirement from his occupation with the State of Kansas.

Vernon married Donna Maxine Madden on August 17, 1963. They had a marriage of nearly 56 years. Donna passed away on March 7, 2019. Vernon loved country music, travels to the Ozarks and Branson, Missouri, reading and a lively conversation. He belonged to the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Norton Christian Church.

Survivors include his nephews and nieces: Roberta Goldsberry, Steve Fisher, Melissa Delimont, Gary Sebelius, Doug Sebelius, Dan Archibald, Jeff Roberts, Stan Roberts and Joni Danielson, and a sister-in-law, Beverly Roberts.

Vernon was preceded in death by his siblings: Nelda Fisher, Bette Sebelius, Loene Archibald and Don Roberts; and a nephew, Mike Archibald.
