First snow of the season also brings record overnight low

A winter weather advisory remains in effect for Hays and all of western Kansas until 7:30 p.m. Monday.

An early season winter storm moved out of the Rockies and into the High Plains, bringing with it the first snowfall of the season in Hays.

According to official records at the K-State Agricultural Research Center, 1.5 inches of snow fell in Hays overnight Sunday, yielding 0.12 inches of precipitation.

That precipitation is the first recorded in Hays during the month of October. The average amount of moisture by the end of the month is 1.48 inches. 

The National Weather Service in Dodge City received a report of 3.3 inches of snow four miles southwest of Ellis. 

Sunday's overnight temperature in Hays fell to 17 degrees, breaking the record low of 18 degrees set on Oct. 25, 1957.
