Shawn Steiner to join KSHSAA staff as Assistant Executive Director

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Kansas State High School Activities Association is pleased to announce that Shawn Steiner of Dodge City will join its staff on July 1, 2026, as an Assistant Executive Director. Steiner was selected in a national search from a strong field of candidates. He will succeed Mark Lentz, who is retiring from the KSHSAA staff.

Mr. Steiner joins the KSHSAA after serving as a high school teacher, coach, and administrator for the past 21 years. Mr. Steiner served his entire professional career at Dodge City High School, starting as a business teacher (three years), Dean of Students/Assistant Principal (eight years), District Activities Director (nine years), and District Athletic Director (one year). During his tenure at Dodge City, Mr. Steiner also served as a coach in the activities of football, wrestling, and baseball. He was also an integral part of the host team for multiple KSHSAA state championship tournaments, including football, volleyball, basketball, and golf.

“Mr. Steiner is respected as an outstanding educator, and his leadership within the KSHSAA will continue to empower students to serve, grow, and lead as they engage in the interscholastic activities,” KSHSAA Executive Director, Bill Faflick said. “His faithful service as a teacher, coach, building administrator, state leader, along with his parent perspective, all support Shawn as an excellent choice to serve the member schools of the Association.”

Mr. Steiner has been selected as the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Administrator of the Year in 2017 and 2024, as well as being designated by the Kansas Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (KIAAA) Art Newcomer Promising AD of the Year in 2019. Following his service on the KIAAA Board of Directors and service as President-Elect and President, Mr. Steiner was designated as the NIAAA State Award of Merit designee.

A graduate of Claflin High School, Mr. Steiner earned an Associate of Science Degree from Garden City Community College in 2001 and then a Bachelor of Science in Business with a minor in Secondary Education from Fort Hays State University in 2004. In 2008, Mr. Steiner earned a Master of Science in Educational Administration and Leadership from Kansas State University.

Mr. Steiner’s primary responsibilities will be the administration of boys and girls soccer, golf and wrestling while assisting with general administration of the KSHSAA.

Mr. Steiner is a lifelong learner committed to timely, concise, and clear communication. He is known as a team builder, a tenacious worker, and student advocate. He is committed to supporting member schools in furthering education-based activity experiences for Kansas students.
