OAKLEY – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys and girls basketball teams left the city of Hays for the first time on Tuesday and picked up a pair of road wins in the Mid-Continent League.
GIRLS: TMP 54, Oakley 46
After trailing most of the way through the first half, TMP’s
Claire Schippers knocked down a three pointer to open the second half and sparked
a 24-7 run through the third and beginning of the fourth quarter leading TMP to
a 54-46 win Tuesday at Oakley High School.
Gracyn Schippers gave TMP the 3-0 to open the game but it was a lead that was short-lived. Oakley answered with a 9-2 run and led 9-5.
The Plainsmen controlled the entire first quarter, never letting the Monarchs (3-2, 2-0 MCL) close inside of two points.
TMP’s Teagan Gottschalk closed the first quarter and opened the second with four of her career-high 11 points helping TMP pull within one at 16-15 but Oakley (2-3, 1-1 MCL) built their lead back and even took a five-point lead at 20-15 with just under seven minutes to play in the first half.
After TMP’s coach Rose McFarland took a timeout, the Monarchs ended the first half down just two at 25-23.
Claire Schippers, on the opening possession of the third quarter, hit her first of two three pointers in the third quarter to put TMP on top 26-25 and they never trailed again.
The Schippers three sparked a 17-7 run in the third quarter that saw TMP go from down one to up 40-32.
After TMP trailed 25-20 with two and a half minutes left in the first half the Monarchs outscored Oakley 24-7 and they never trailed again.
TMP’s biggest lead came at 44-32.
Oakley trimmed to TMP lead to 44-42 with just under four and a half minutes to play with a 13-3 run but TMP was able to close out the game outscoring Oakley 7-2 over the final four minutes of the game.
Claire Schippers scored a game and career-high 15 points. Brooke Koenigsman had 14 points and five rebounds and Teagan Gottschalk added a career-high 11 points for TMP.
BOYS: TMP 49, Oakley 34
The TMP-Marian boys used a 13-2 first half run on their way
to a 49-34 win over Oakley Tuesday at Oakley High School.
The first quarter contained four ties with TMP taking a brief 11-8 lead on a Ty Schmeidler three pointer. Oakley (0-5, 0-2 MCL) outscored the Monarchs 4-0 to end the quarter with a 12-11 lead.
Will Eck opened the second quarter with a steal and layup to put the Monarchs up 13-12, sparking a 13-2 run and they never trailed again.
Eck scored seven of the 13 points during the run as TMP built a 24-14 lead.
TMP (1-4, 1-1 MCL) took a 32-26 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half Oakley closed within six at 32-26 but TMP answered with a 15-4 run to end third quarter and open the fourth leading by 17 at 47-30.
The Monarchs went on to pick up their first win of the season 49-34.
Eck led all scorers with a career-high 13 points. Ian Nehls was in double-figures for the third time this season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
TMP will host Central Plains on Friday night.
