馃弨 Two close games as Hays sweeps Dodge City

DODGE CITY - Hays High went to Dodge City Tuesday for their final regular season road trip.

Girls - Hays 44, Dodge City 38
It took four extra minutes, but Hays High knocked off Dodge City 44-38.

The two teams were tied seven times and swapped the lead on five occasions with most of that occurring in a low scoring first half. The Indians led 10-9 after on quarter but were held to just two second quarter points. The Red Demons took a 14-12 lead to the locker room.

Highlights

Dodge City's biggest lead was five points in the third quarter at 19-14. Molly Martin scored eight straight points for Hays allowing the Indians to take a 24-22 lead. Hays would never trail again.

The Indians led by two entering the fourth quarter and held multiple three point leads. Dodge City though hit a free throw with 1:20 left and then stole a backcourt pass and tied the game at 33 with :50 left.

Hays never got a shot away but instead turned the ball over. Dodge City had the ball with 1.9 seconds left after an inadvertent whistle. The Red Demons got a decent look at a three but came up short.

Hays scored 15 seconds into overtime and never trailed and didn't allow Dodge City to tie the game as the Indians won 44-38.

Molly Martin led the Indians with 12 points and Katie Linenberger chipped in 11. Hays improves to 11-8 and 4-3 in WAC play. Becca Unruh scored a game high 17 for Dodge City who falls to 9-10 and 4-2.


Boys - Hays 47, Dodge City 40
Hays took an early third quarter lead that they never surrendered on their way to a 47-40 win in Dodge City.

Hays and Dodge City swapped the lead six times and were tied on three occasions in the first half. Each team also had a big first half run. The Red Demons opened the game on a 10-2 run forcing an Indian timeout with 2:20 left in the quarter.

Hays fought back to tie the game at 11 through the end of the first quarter and finished a 13-1 run for a 15-11 lead early in the second. The Indians had two different four point leads before the teams swapped the lead, ending with a 22-21 halftime lead for the Red Demons.

Highlights

There was only one lead change in the second half. The Indians got a put back basket :50 into the third quarter for a 23-22 lead. That basket started a 6-0 spurt after which Hays never trailed again and Dodge City never tied the game.

Hays built their lead to nine in the fourth quarter at 37-28 with 2:30 remaining. The Red Demons though scored the remaining four points the quarter had to offer and closed to within five at 37-32.

The Indians fourth quarter advantage bounced between five and nine points on the way to a 47-40 victory.

Jack Weimer scored a game high 16 points. Chason VanDerWege just missed a third straight double-double at 9 points and 12 rebounds. Keamonie Archie grabbed 11 rebounds, his fourth double figure rebound game this year to match VanDerWege's four.
