UPDATE: Child dies after being trapped in house fire Wednesday afternoon in Hays

On September 21, 2022, at 3:01 p.m., the Hays Emergency Communication Center received a report of a structure fire in the 100 blk of West 37th Street, Hays.

The Hays Fire Department along with the Ellis County Fire Department, Ellis County Emergency Medical Services, and the Hays Police Department were dispatched to the scene.

While en route to the scene it was reported that a child was trapped inside the house.

Rescue efforts were initiated, and firefighters were able to locate and remove the child from the home.

The child was transported to Hays Medical Center by ECEMS. It is with a heavy heart that we report that the child later died from injuries caused by the fire.

Fire crews used multiple hand lines to extinguish the fire.

The fire caused extensive damage to the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Kansas State Fire Marshall’s Office.

At around 3 p.m. Wednesday, Hays emergency responders were dispatched to a structure fire in the 100 block of West 37th.

Arriving crews encountered an active fire in a home and began efforts to extinguish the fire.

Roads surrounding the area were closed as firefighters from the Hays and Ellis County fire departments worked the fire, which filled the immediate area with thick smoke.

Gas and electric service were cut at around 3:30 p.m. as efforts continued.

The fire was determined to be out at 4:22 p.m.
