🏀 Monarchs take two from Russell

RUSSELL – The TMP-Marian Monarchs sweep of pair of Mid-Continent League games Tuesday night in Russell with the Monarch girls leading wire-to-wire while the boys had to rally from down 11 in the first half before clinching a double-digit win over the Broncos.

GIRLS: TMP 74, Russell 31
The TMP Lady Monarchs opened the game onn a 20-2 run and outscored Russell 28-6 in the first quarter as they cruised to a 74-31 win Tuesday night in Russell.

The Monarchs (11-6, 6-2 MCL) full court press forced Russell (2-15, 1-7 MCL) into 15 first quarter turnovers while they raced out to a 20-2 start to the game.

TMP’s Hannah Garcia scored seven of her career-high 12 in the first quarter and Brooke Koenigsman added nine in the opening frame as TMP took a 28-6 lead after the first quarter.

It was more of the same in the second quarter as the Monarchs built a 32 point lead late in the first half at 44-12 before leading 44-144 at halftime.

Jaci VonLintel scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half.

The Monarchs extended their lead to 40 in the third quarter and with a running clock in the fourth quarter picked up a 74-31 victory, their second straight.

Brooke Koenigsman’s 18 points led three Monarchs in double-figures. Jaci VonLintel finished with 14 points and Hannah Garcia added 12 points.

BOYS: TMP 60, Russell 50
The TMP boys rally from down 11 in the first half as they knocked off the Broncos for the 11th straight time Tuesday, 60-50.

The Monarchs (13-2, 8-0 MCL) opened the game on a 7-2 run only to see Russell ( 11-7, 5-3 MCL) close the first quarter on a 13-5 run and take a 15-12 lead into the second quarter.

Back-to-back Dylan Werth field goals for TMP trimmed the lead to 18-16 early in the second quarter but he was hit with a technical after the second field goal and Russell capitalized. They went on a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to go up by 11 at 31-20.

But Harrison Lowe hit his second field goal of the first half with less than 30 second to play and Werth added one of his own to make it 31-24 at the break.

The Monarchs coupled those two field goals with a 9-0 run to start the second half to take a brief 33-31 lead with two and a half minutes to play in the third quarter.

There were eight lead changes and two tied over the over the next four plus minutes to end the third quarter and open the fourth.

The final tie came at 45 on a layup by Luke Rome with just over five minutes to play.

That layup sparked a 17-5 TMP run to end the game on their way to a 60-50 win.

TMP make 12-of-15 free throws in the fourth quarter.

It marks the Monarchs 13 straight win.

Dylan Werth scored 21 points for TMP with eight rebounds and Kade Harris added 16 points.

TMP will travel to Phillipsburg Friday to take on the Panthers.
