
Doris A. King, age 89, died Thursday, February 4, 2021, at Satanta Long
Term Care Unit in Satanta, Kansas. She was born December 16, 1931, in
Panhandle, Texas, the daughter of James Robert Earl and Audrey Olean
(Cox) Spain.
Doris grew up in Panhandle, Texas. She then moved with her family to
Dallas, Texas, and graduated from Oak Cliff High School in 1949. She
met Claude L. King in Satanta, Kansas, her sophomore year in high
school, and married him on September 24, 1949, in Dallas. They moved to
Grant County, Kansas, and farmed until they moved to town in 1998.
Doris was a lifetime member of Eastern Star #471, American Legion
Auxiliary, East Grant Study Club, and the First United Methodist Church
in Ulysses. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, and yard work in general.
She could also be found crocheting, counted cross stitch, needle point,
embroidering, and jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Doris also enjoyed
attending Monday Study Club, and was on a ladies and couples bowling
teams.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Jerrie Brooks and husband Jake of
Scott City; sister, Connie Andrews and husband Bill of Grapevine, Texas;
two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Claude in 2000;
daughter, Jolynn Wood; son, James (Jim) Nolan King; and three siblings,
Betty Lou Garmin, Bob Spain and Ron Spain.
Funeral service will be Monday, February 8, 2021, at 11:00 AM at Garnand
Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses, Kansas, with Reverend Kelly
Gindlesberger officiating. The service will also be available on Garnand
Funeral Home Facebook page. Interment will follow at the Ulysses
Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, February 7, 2021, from 2:00 PM
until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be
given to the Satanta Long Term Care Unit in care of Garnand Funeral
Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, Kansas 67880.
