Gina Lee (Wolters) Schamberger passed away on April 2, 2026, surrounded by her loving family, and went home to be with her Heavenly Father.
Gina was born on May 19, 1963, in Smith Center, Kansas, to Gerald and Marge (Lumpkin) Wolters. She was raised on a farm near Portis, Kansas, alongside her two sisters and brother. Growing up, Gina enjoyed hunting and fishing, cheering on the Raiders and Royals, and cherished the simple joys of rural life.
She attended Portis Elementary School and later Osborne High School, graduating with the Class of 1981. Following high school, Gina continued her education at Barton County Community College before attending Fort Hays State University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.
Gina met John Schamberger while attending college. On August 24, 1991, they were united in marriage at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Hoxie, Kansas, despite the fact that she always teased John that George Strait was her boyfriend. John and her made their home on the family farm north of Hoxie, where they built a life together rooted in love, faith, and hard work. They were blessed with three children, Clayton, Courtney, and Cami.
Gina’s family was by far her greatest passion. She coined herself as “the favorite aunt”, but her most cherished role was being “Gigi” to her grandchildren. She treasured every moment spent with her family, creating memories that will be held close forever.
Gina was a devoted and beloved teacher. She began her teaching career in the Hoxie School System, where she taught several different grades/subjects until she landed at third grade (her favorite). To her students, she was affectionately known as “Mrs. Schammy”. Her classroom will be remembered with the sounds of singing, dancing, and filled with Winnie the Pooh Bear. She was deeply loved and respected, and her passion for teaching and guiding young minds left a lasting impact on countless children.
Gina will be remembered for her gentle heart, warm smile, and giving spirit, as well as the strength and grace with which she faced life. She found great joy in volunteering, her favorite being at the Sheridan County Free Fair. She was always putting others before herself no matter her circumstance. She instilled in her family the importance of kindness, generosity, and giving back.
Her faith was an essential part of her life, and she lived it daily through her compassion, generosity, and unwavering love for her family and friends. She was raised in the Grace Brethren Church of Portis and later joined the Catholic faith by becoming a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church.
Gina is survived by her husband, John Schamberger; son, Clayton Schamberger (Marissa); daughters, Courtney Beran (Matt) of Claflin, Kansas, and Cami Megaffin (Trae) of Glendale, Arizona; mother, Marge Wolters of Portis, Kansas; brother, Gary Wolters (Janice) of Portis, Kansas; sisters, Joni Johnson (Mark) of Larned, Kansas, and Jodi Spindler (Dan) of Topeka, Kansas; grandchildren, Kaslyn Castillo, Emmett Schamberger, Owen Schamberger, Eleanor Schamberger, and Maggie Beran; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
