HAYS - The TMP-Marian boys' and girls' basketball teams each dropped their first game of the 42nd Annual Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout Thursday in Hays.
BOYS: Hugoton 51, TMP 21
The Hugoton Eagles took advantage of a rough shooting first
quarter for the Monarchs, opening the game on a 15-2 run while the Monarchs
made just one field goal from the floor. in the first qarter.
Hugoton opened the game on an 18-2 run into early in the second quarter.
TMP got back-to-back field goals, cutting the deficit to 12 at 18-6 early in the second quarter. But Hugoton answered with a 14-5 run to close the first half with a 32-11 lead.
The Eagles outscored TMP 17-3 in the third quarter and with the running clock in the fourth they cruised to the 51-21 victory.
Jacob Seib led the Monarchs with eight points and Grant Nehls added seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Monarchs will take on Newton in the 8:15 p.m. game Friday at Hays Middle School.
GIRLS: Olathe West 53, TMP 32
The Owls started the game with a three pointer before the
Monarchs Brooke Koenigsman scored five straight and Shaynne Yost field goal in
transition gave the Monarchs their largest lead of the game at 7-3.
The Owls answered the TMP 7-0 run with one of their own for a 10-7 lead.
TMP was able to hang close for much of the first half but down 12-11 the Owls strung together a 10-2 run to close out the first half and led 22-12 at the break.
TMP鈥檚 Brook Koenigsman led the Monarchs with 16 points and Shaylee Gottschalk chipped in with 10 points.
The Monarchs will take on Manhattan in the 3 p.m. Thursday.
