UPDATE: Dry, windy conditions fan fires across area

UPDATE 4:42 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Dry and windy conditions result in fires popping up across the area.

After Ellis County crews extinguished a grass fire west of US Highway 183 in northern Ellis County, another grass fire erupted in northern Russell County.

The second fire was at 180th Street and Shoreline Road in Russell County. 

Although the fire was extinguished by late afternoon, crews were still at both locations dealing with hot spots.

The total area burned in the Russell fire was not immediately available.

UPDATE: A grass fire in north Ellis County west of US Highway 183 was reported out about 2 p.m. today.

Another fire was reported in northwest Russell County about the same time the US 183 fire was extinguished.

US 183, which had been down to one lane of traffic, was reopened shortly after 2 p.m.

It was unknown immediately how many acres burned or any damage the fire may have caused.

Ellis County fire crews are battling a grass fire north of Hays Tuesday afternoon.

The fire is located north of Homestead Road and south of Saline River on the west side of US Highway 183.

At this time is unclear is any structures have been damaged in the fire but there are several pumping stations in the area.

Traffic is limited to one lane at this time.
