PARK CITY, Kan. - Wrestling in the same building that hosted the 2024 NCAA Division II Men's Wrestling Championships in March, the Fort Hays State men's wrestling team kicked off the 2024-25 campaign at the Falcon Open hosted by Friends University on Saturday at Park City Arena. The Tigers had 27 wrestlers compete, with four advancing to the quarterfinals, two reaching the semifinals and one achieving a top four placement.
FHSU had 25 wrestlers entered in the elite division and two in the amateur division. The Tigers combined for a record of 32-53 on the day, with 18 wrestlers winning at least one bout and 11 picking up multiple victories.
Tereus Henry, a former All-American at 197 pounds that opened the year ranked eighth in the NWCA Coaches Poll, placed fourth after turning in a record of 3-2 on the day. He picked up a 1-0 decision in his first bout before recording a convincing 11-0 major decision in the quarterfinals. He then lost to the eventual champion Ryker Blackburn from Saint Mary in sudden victory before bouncing back with a 5-2 decision in the consolation semifinals. His day ended with a loss in the third-place bout to the second-ranked wrestler in the NAIA at 197 pounds.
Three other Tigers also reached the quarterfinals alongside Henry, including Marcell Dely at 157 pounds, Cason Lindsey at 165 pounds and Riah Ostrander at 285 pounds. Dely finished the day at 3-2 including two bonus-point wins, including a pin in 1:53 and a major decision. Lindsey won his quarterfinal matchup with a pin in 4:22 but was then forced to medically forfeit the remainder of his matches. Ostrander was 1-2 on the day with a major decision in his first bout of the day.
Jacob Judd matched Dely and Henry with a team-high three wins on the day, doing so in the 165-pound bracket. The freshman lost to the eventual champion in the first round before rattling off three-consecutive wins in the consolation bracket. He recorded two bonus-point victories in the process, completing a pin in 1:12 and racking up a 14-3 major decision.
Six wrestlers finished 2-2 in the elite division, including A.B. Stokes at 125 pounds, Drew Bell at 149 pounds, Connor Padgett at 174 pounds, Matthew Rodriguez at 184 pounds, Ryan Patterson at 197 pounds and Jaxson Thomas at 285 pounds. Rodriguez recorded the fastest pin of the day for the Tigers, sticking his opponent in just 38 seconds.
Five other Tigers picked up one win on the day, including Jett Schwartz with a decision at 133 pounds, Corbin White with a 17-1 technical fall at 141 pounds, Philipp Nguyen with a 23-9 major decision at 149 pounds, Charlie Hutson with a decision at 157 pounds and Griffin Mitchell with a decision at 165 pounds. Nguyen's 23 points were the most scored by an individual in a single bout for the entirety of the elite division.In the amateur division Tacoma Augustine picked up a pair of wins at 133 pounds, including a pin in 4:26 and a 17-2 technical fall. Ayden Presson went 1-2 at 141 pounds, including a win via decision in his first bout of the day.
The Tigers will return to action Thursday (Nov. 7) when they host Southeast CC for a dual beginning at 7 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.
