TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The ninth-ranked Fort Hays State women overcame an early injury to Cydney Bergman and red-hot 3-point shooting by Northeastern State to beat the RiverHawks 70-58 Saturday afternoon at the NSU Event Center.
The Tigers 16-2, 16-2 MIAA) have won 11 straight and remain tied with Central Missouri and Nebraska-Kearney atop the MIAA standings.
Bergman went down on the first possession of the game and would not return and the Tigers quickly fell behind after three straight 3-pointers from NSU's Cenia Hayes.
The Tigers pulled within a point at the end the first quarter and outscored the RiverHawks 18-12 in the second quarter for a 34-29 lead.
FHSU pushed the lead to 13 late in the third quarter and led by 14 following a Madison Mittie 3-pointer on an inbound play with two seconds on the shot clock.
NSU would use an 11-2 run to close within five points with just under five to play the Tigers used an 11-2 run of their own to push the lead back to 14 with a little over a minute to play.
Jaden Hobbs led three Tigers in double-figures with 17 points. Katie Wagner added 14 points and Whitney Randall 13. Olivia Holenbeck added nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Cenia Hayes hit five 3-pointers and led the RiverHawks with 12 points. Morgan Lee went 5-for-5 from the floor with four threes and added 16.
