HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs opened the season Thursday against the Hays High Indians in the first round of the Hays City Shootout and it was the Indians sweeping both games to advance to the semifinals Friday.
GIRLS: Hays High 55, TMP 27
The Hays High girls used a pair of big runs on their way to a 55-27 win over the Monarchs at Hays High School.
TMP built an early 6-4 lead on back-to-back Gracyn Schippers field goals but their lead was short-lived as Hays High strung together a 16-4 run to end the first quarter and open the second quarter for a 20-10 lead.
The Indians took a 25-12 lead into the halftime break.
The second half saw the Indians outscore TMP 26-6 and lead 46-18.
With the running clock in the fourth quarter Hays earned the 55-27 victory.
TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman scored a team-high 8 points.
The Monarchs will take on Newton at 3 p.m. Friday in the first consolation game of the day at Hays High School.
BOYS: Hays 59, TMP 26
The TMP-Marian boys could not overcome a 22-2 Hays High run to start the game as they drop their first game of the season 59-26 Thursday at Hays High School.
The Monarchs offense struggle to get things going early, scoring only on an Ian Nehls jumper and a pair of Ty Schmeidler free throws in the first quarter.
With Hays High leading 22-4 after the first quarter TMP’s Joey Mindrup his back-to-back three pointers and Will Eck and Caden Dinkel each added a three pointer of their own cutting the Hays High lead to 34-16 but that was as close as they got the rest of the way.
Hays led 40-18 at halftime and with the running clock in the fourth quarter they claimed a 59-26 victory.
Nehls scored a team-high seven points for TMP.
The Monarchs will take on Newton in the 4:45 p.m. consolation game at Hays High School Friday afternoon.
