Phillipsburg Fire Department

The Phillipsburg Fire Department is proud to announce that it has received the prestigious Gold Helmet Department distinction from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This recognition is awarded to fire departments that enroll at least 50 percent of their active personnel in the National Registry for Cancer, showcasing a commitment to occupational health and safety.

The National Firefighter Registry represents the largest effort to date aimed at understanding and reducing cancer risks within the fire service. With occupational cancer being a leading cause of death among firefighters, this effort is crucial. Firefighters frequently encounter carcinogens and hazardous chemicals while on duty, making participation in the registry vital for enhancing safety measures.

By joining the registry, our firefighters contribute to pivotal research that identifies trends, improves prevention strategies, and fosters the development of safer practices across the fire service. Nationwide, 156 departments are participating in this initiative, including 18 within the state of Kansas.

Participation in the registry is voluntary and open to all U.S. firefighters, whether active or retired. We encourage more departments to take part in this important effort to protect the health and safety of our nation’s firefighters.
