William Michael “Mike” Galloway departed this life on November 15, 2020, at the Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in WaKeeney, KS, at the age of 75.
He will long be remembered for his dry sense of
humor and his gift of gab. William Michael was born to Robert and Beth
(Clark) Galloway on November 19, 1944, in Hays, KS.
Mike married Becky Jean Mason on April 10, 1971. To this marriage
were born two sons, John Travis Galloway and Lewis Michael Galloway.
They later divorced. On January 3, 1981, Mike married Sherry (Shearer)
Mermis in WaKeeney. To this union was born Philip Clark Galloway.
Mike attended Texas A&M University, and he was an Aggie fan
throughout his life. He graduated from Emporia State University in 1967.
His working career began at IBM in New York, New York. He then was
employed by Monfort Feed Yards in Greeley, Colorado and later returned
to WaKeeney to work for his dad at the WaKeeney Sale Barn. Later he
worked for Livestock Insurance Services and Livestock Marketing
Association. He completed his career working for The Hartford in its
Livestock Division.
Mike was active in the Presbyterian Church of WaKeeney, serving
several times as a deacon and elder. He loved working with and around
cattle and horses. He was a longtime member of the Kansas Livestock
Association, serving in several roles. Mike was also a member of the
Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and the Colorado
Livestock Association.
Mike is survived by his wife, Sherry, of the home; three children
and two stepchildren: John Galloway (Katie) of Weston, MO, Lewis
Galloway (Jamie) of Prairie Village, KS, Philip Galloway (Rachel) of La
Grange, IL, Angela Mermis of Plainville, and Joel Mermis (Carrie) of
Leawood, KS; three siblings: Jack Galloway (Anna) of Port Angeles, WA,
Janie Anderson of Columbia, MO, and Julie Newcomer (Randy) of Louisburg,
KS; eleven grandchildren: Vivi, Mimi, and Stella Galloway; Will,
Harper, and Annie Galloway; Mollie and Josie Galloway; Mikiah Mermis;
and Mason and Ethan Mermis.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Beth Galloway.
A private family service will be held.
