WASHINGTON — Did someone violate your trust and privacy by sharing your intimate images online without your consent? Or did they digitally alter or create an intimate image of you? You have rights — and online platforms have obligations to help.
You may know that websites and social media platforms that host user-generated content let you report content that violates their community guidelines. But did you know that platforms covered by the Take It Down Act are legally required to give you a way to report intimate images shared without your consent — including deepfakes? And that platforms must take down the images (and copies of the images) within 48 hours?
If you discover that someone shared intimate images of you without your permission:
What if the platform doesn’t remove the nonconsensual intimate image? The Take It Down Act requires online platforms to remove intimate photos or videos within 48 hours of your request. If the platform doesn’t take it down within 48 hours, report it to the FTC at TakeItDown.ftc.gov.
