Four TMP-M students competed in the state FBLA competitions on March 29-31 in Topeka.
Junior Mia Lang and sophomore Gracyn Schippers competed in E-Business.
The requirements for the E-Business competition were as follows:
Develop and create an E-business site for a local bed and breakfast, hotel, or other lodging venue in your community.
The business can be real or fictional. The website should include a company identity including a name, logo, and brand. The website should have elements of a typical lodging facility including contact information, the ability to make reservations, view different room types, view amenities, and local attractions. Ensure that your E-business site includes: • An e-commerce tool showing prices for different lodging types • A scheduling tool allowing customers to book lodging • An API to an online map service showing different local attractions
The website was created by Lang and Schippers and sent in prior to the state competitions at the end of March. It was pre-judged and selected as a finalist to be presented at the state competitions. Both Lang and Schippers had to present to a panel of judges their E-Business website.
They were awarded second place during the awards ceremony on the last day of the State Competitions. This qualified them for the National FBLA competitions in Atlanta at the end of June.
Juniors Joey Mindrup and Evan Balthazor competed in the marketing competition. This event consisted of both students taking a 73-question exam about marketing concepts.
Their scores were averaged, and from this exam, they were chosen as one of the top 10 teams to move on to the finals.
During the finals, each team was given a case study involving a marketing problem, and students had 20 minutes to come up with their solution for the problem.
After 20 minutes, Balthazor and Mindrup had seven minutes to present to a panel of judges their plan to address the marketing issue.
Balthazor and Mindrup were awarded second place in the state. This qualified them for the National FBLA competitions in Atlanta at the end of June.
Senior Allison Weber, juniors Joey Mindrup and Evan Balthazor, also qualified for the state competitions in business ethics. These students were given an ethical issue to be researched in order to determine why the issue happened, how it should be resolved, and what could have prevented it.
A presentation was prepared, videoed and sent in prior to the state competitions to be pre-judged. The presentation was selected for the finals to be presented at state.
However, because of an illness, they were not able to compete in this event in Topeka.
The students and sponsor will go to Atlanta from June 26 through 30 to compete against FBLA students from every state in the U.S.
Students will be calling local businesses to ask for donations to help fund the trip to nationals. This will be done during the week of May 8-12.
If anyone is wanting to help with this opportunity for the students, they are asked to contact the school.
