HESSTON – Hays High soccer closed out its regular season Tuesday with a 7-0 shutout of Hesston.

The Indians held a slim, 1-0 lead at halftime before exploding for six second-half goals.

Junior Ivan Maldonado scored a hat trick for HHS. Freshman Michael Contreras had two goals. And senior Jacob Hemphill and freshman Mason Shadley each scored once.

Hays High finished the regular season with a 7-8 record, including six close losses (five by one goal) while playing in the loaded Western Athletic Conference with three state-ranked Class 6A teams.

The Indians now look ahead to postseason, which will begin next week with the Class 5A playoffs.

But they will have to go the rest of the season without their starting goalkeeper, junior Cedric Durr, who suffered a broken finger in the Indians’ final home game vs. Garden City last Thursday.

Senior Chase Zadina was in goal for HHS on Tuesday and picked up the shutout.
