Vernon F. 'Vernie' Pfannenstiel, 88, Hays, died Sunday, January 19, 2025 at HaysMed.

He was born August 18, 1936 on the family farm near Antonino, the son of Joseph and Alvina (Leiker) Pfannenstiel. Vernie graduated from Hays High School and loved his work as a painter, owning and operating Pfannenstiel Painting.  On June 6, 1959 he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Lang in Ellis, and they celebrated 65 years of marriage.  He enjoyed dancing with Mary Jane and time outdoors whether camping, fishing, or hunting.  He loved his family, his grandchildren and great grandchildren who all knew him as Grandpa Vernie were dear to his heart.

Survivors include his wife Mary Jane, three children, LaVerna, Duane (Wanda), and Jan (Dennis), two brothers, Gerald (Janice) Pfannenstiel and Lee Pfannenstiel, two sisters, Mary Zimmer and JoAnn (Darrell) VonFeldt, two sisters-in-law, Delores Pfannenstiel and Darlene Pfannenstiel, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Darrell and Ron, three brothers, Virgil, Arlen, and Dennis (Noveline) Pfannenstiel, and a brother-in-law, Eugene Zimmer. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Brian McCaffrey officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery, Munjor.  Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Wednesday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Thursday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.  A vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested for the family’s wishes and may be made payable to Mary Jane Pfannenstiel.  Condolences and memories of Vernie may be left for his family at www.haysmemorial.com
