Harl G. Stump, MD, 86, Hays, died Monday, March 16, 2026 at Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse.

He was born in Shattuck, Oklahoma, on July 9, 1939 to Dr. Harley and Jeanette (Slaughter) Stump.  He was raised in several places including Oklahoma City, during his grade school years, Chicago, where he earned his Eagle Scout Award and attended junior high, and then Modesto, California, graduating from Thomas Downey High School in 1957.  He attended colleges in LaVerne, California and McPherson, Kansas, graduating in 1961.  On June 16, 1962, he married LaVena Murrey, who he met at McPherson College, at Monitor Church of the Brethren near McPherson.  In 1965, he graduated from the University of Kansas Medical School.  After graduation, Dr. Stump was a rotating Intern at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, and this was followed by two years in the United State Air Force as a Flight Medical Officer.  He went on to complete a general surgery residency at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado.  In 1972, Dr. Stump practiced in Hays at St. Anthony Hospital, Hadley Hospital, and HaysMed, retiring in 2011.  He returned to HaysMed in Wound Care from 2014-2016. 

Dr. Stump was raised in the Church of the Brethren but became a member of First United Methodist Church in Hays, in 1972.  He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and past president of the Kansas Chapter of the ACS.  He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the American Medical Association, Kansas Medical Society, Central Kansas Medical Society, the Southwestern Surgical Society, FHSU Tiger Club, and a life member of Vietnam Veterans of America.

Dr. Stump conducted flight physicals, enjoyed flying, and earned his private pilot’s license.  He was avid fan of University of Kansas athletics, the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals, and was a Fort Hays State University football and basketball season ticket holder.   

Survivors include his wife LaVena of Hays, two sons Stephen Stump and wife Lisa of St. Louis, MO and Phillip Stump and wife Ellen of Cheyenne, WY, and six grandchildren Curtis, Brent, Kevin, Mark, Elizabeth, and Sarah Stump.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Nelson Stump.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 pm on Monday, April 6, 2026 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Pastor Chad Pritchett officiating.  Visitation will be from 1:30 pm until service time on Monday, April 6, at the funeral home.  Burial will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 in McPherson Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church or to HaysMed Foundation.  Condolences and memories of Dr. Stump may be shared with his family at www.haysmemorial.com
