HAYS – The TMP Lady Monarchs used a 20-3 first-half run on their way to a 59-24 win over Scott City in the first round of sub-state Tuesday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays.
Scott City led by one twice to start the game, the final time at 6-5 but TMP’s Emilee Lane and Jaci VonLintel converted on three free throws to put the Monarchs up 8-6 and they would never trail again.
Brooke Koeningsman and VonLintel hit back-to-back 3-pointers following two straight Beavers turnovers that put TMP up 14-6 after the first quarter.
They extended the 9-0 run to end the first quarter into a 20-3 run midway through the second quarter as TMP built a 25-9 lead. Kassidi Yost and Jaci VonLintel combined to score 21 points in the first half.
The Monarchs led 28-13 at halftime.
The second half was more of the same. TMP’s Sophia Balthazor connected on three third quarter 3-pointers and Koeningsman added two more 3-pointers as TMP outscored Scott City 20-8 in the third quarter to take a 48-21 lead through three quarters.
With the running clock in the fourth quarter TMP went on to the 59-24 victory.
Jaci VonLintel led three in double-figures with 11 points. Emilee Lane and Kassidi Yost scored 10 points each. Brooke Koenigsman and Sophia Balthazor each scored nine.
TMP will take on Phillipsburg Friday in the sub-state semifinals in Goodland. The Panthers rallied to beat Colby 60-58 Tuesday.
The top-seed Goodland beat Norton 73-28 and will take on Hoisington after the Cardinals beat Russell 47-43.
