Gerald Wayne Doerfler

Gerald Wayne Doerfler, 81, Codell, passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2021, at Rooks County Health Center.

He was born June 19, 1939, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Alex and Crescentia (Schumacher) Doerfler.  Gerald was a 1958 graduate of Hays High School.  He graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Master of Fine Arts Degree and taught art at Plainville High School for 39 years.  One year of his teaching career was spent with his family on the Isle of Tiree off the coast of Scotland.  On August 11, 1965, he was united in marriage to Judy Lee Hachmeister in Las Vegas, Nevada.  They celebrated 55 years of marriage.  He was a member of Codell Community Church.  He enjoyed fixing and building things, gardening, and doing work with his hands.  He loved ice cream, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife Judy of Codell, a son: Drew Doerfler of Codell, a daughter: Dayna Crawford and husband Kevin of Codell, and three grandchildren: Courtney, Blake, and Cody.  Other survivors include two sisters: JoAnne Reynolds of Hays and Judy Unrein and husband Pat of Arizona, and a sister-in-law: MaryAnn Doerfler of Hays.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers: Bobby, Eugene, Donald, Alex, and James, and four sisters: Rita, Ruth, Norma, and Sharon.

A private family burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery, Codell.  Memorials are suggested and made payable to: Alzheimer’s Association, in care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.
