🥎 Hays goes 1-1 in Dodge City

DODGE CITY - Hays High went 1-1 in the first day of the Dodge City Lewis Automotive Group Softball Classic on Friday.

Game 1: Hays 5, Wichita Northwest 2
Hays High scored four runs after falling behind 1-0 on their way to a 5-2 win over Wichita Northwest.

Jaylee Summers tied the game after crossing the plate on a ground out in the bottom of the second to tie the game. The Indians took the lead when courtesy runner Shea Augustine scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth. Augustine ran for Lakyn Zimmerman who doubled to open the inning.

Hays added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Dani Willeford sacrifice fly that scored Lauren Klein. In the next at bat Riley Dreher drove in Dezarae Schmidt for a 4-1 advantage. 

The Grizzlies put a single tally on the board in the top of the sixth. Hays answered in the bottom of the inning when Haley Rees took advantage of a Northwest error for the final run at 5-2.

Aubree Thomas pitched for the first time this season. She went all seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits. She struck out nine and walked none.

Game 2: Derby 14, Hays 2
Hays High lost to 6A power Derby 14-2 in the second game of the day.

The two teams were tied at one run a piece after the first inning. Riley Dreher drove in Dani Willeford with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to tie the game at one.

Derby took control in the third and fourth innings. The Panthers scored three in the third and seven in the fourth for an 11-1 lead. Hays had four of their six errors during the same span. 

The Indians only other run scored in the bottom of the fourth when Riley Dreher crossed the plate after a Derby error.

The Panthers scored their final three runs in the top of the seventh for the 14-2 victory.

Riley Dreher took the loss in the circle throwing all seven innings. Only two of the fourteen runs allowed were earned.

The Indians are now 5-3 on the season. Derby is 11-1. They stay in Dodge City for day two of the classic.
