TOPEKA — According to the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program has awarded 2025-2026 Planning and Programming (P&P) grants to six Kansas communities: Alta Vista, Douglass, Fort Scott, Grainfield, La Crosse and Leavenworth.
These grants will fund SRTS plans with work beginning in August, and final plans due in May 2026.
Plans include an analysis of existing conditions, public outreach results and recommended infrastructure and non-infrastructure solutions to help more children safely walk, bike and roll to school. Communities with SRTS plans are then eligible to apply for SRTS construction and programming implementation grants through the KDOT Transportation Alternatives Program.
This is the third round of planning grants being awarded by KDOT. The next opportunity to apply for SRTS grants is currently scheduled for April 2026. More information is available at saferoutes.ksdot.gov/grants-and-funding.
Planning recently finished for the 2024-25 round of P&P grants that were awarded to five Kansas communities last year. Those communities were in Wallace County and the towns of Riverton, Sedan, Silver Lake and Wellsville. The SRTS plans for these and other communities can be found at saferoutes.ksdot.gov/about-the-program.
