Vernon J. Kisner

Vernon J. Kisner, 91, Hays, died Sunday, September 27, 2020 at HaysMed.

He was born May 4, 1929 in Pfeifer the son of Adam and Cecilia (Jacobs) Kisner.   In 1947, he graduated from Schoenchen High School then attended Kansas State University for a year.  He earned both a Bachelor and Masters Degree in mathematics from Fort Hays State University and taught math in Schoenchen, at Jefferson West, and at Hays High School.  On April 18, 1950 he was united in marriage to Virginia Dome in Pfeifer and they celebrated 70 years of marriage.  He was a farmer, automotive repairman in LaCrosse, and a police officer for the City of Hays.  His memberships included St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Joseph Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #1325.  Vernon loved the world of mathematics, but especially loved teaching and helping his students learn.  He enjoyed playing volleyball, raising eight wonderful children with his wife, watching his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, and following K-State athletics.  He loved life and farming, and always looked forward to harvest and driving the combine.

Survivors include his wife Virginia of Hays, four sons; Mark Kisner and wife Judy of Sugarland, TX, Terrence Kisner and wife Anne Marie of Bellevue, WA, Dale Kisner and wife Karen of Victoria, and Craig Kisner and wife Robyn of Hays, four daughters; Donna Bailey and husband Berny of Hays, Kimberly Moore and husband Phil of Hays, Sandra Skipton and husband Steve of Derby, and Anne Zimmerman and husband Keith of Hays, four sisters; Melvina Sexton of Topeka, Mary Jane Kuhn of Victoria, Flora DeBacker of Topeka, and Vera Toyzan and husband Mike of Albuquerque, NM, 22 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother; Delmar Kisner, four infant brothers, and two sisters; Bernice Cochran and Twila Grace.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at Holy Cross Shrine in Pfeifer.  Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Wednesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until service time on Thursday, at Holy Cross Shrine.  A vigil service will be at 6:30 pm followed by a Third Degree Knights of Columbus rosary, both on Wednesday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to Holy Cross Charities or to TMP-Marian High School.  Condolences and memories of Vernon may be shared with the family at www.haysmemorial.com
