HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women's soccer team fell 1-0 on Friday to No. 6 ranked Washburn. The loss dropped the Tigers to 11-3-3 overall, 7-2-1 in conference play, while the Ichabods improved to 15-1-1 overall, 9-0-1 in MIAA play.
Fort Hays State celebrated a total on nine seniors on Friday night for Senior Night. The seniors that were honored were Isabel Robben, Hannah Mares, Reilly Madden, Delavney Lunsway, Jadyn Newell, Skylar Forrest, Carly Walker, Jersey Garoutte and Lynette Hawkins.
On a chilly evening in Hays both teams were unable to find the back of the net in the first half of the match. Washburn edged the Tigers in time of possession through the first 45 minutes of play and outshot Fort Hays State 5-2. Both teams recorded just one shot on goal throughout the period.
Fort Hays State had the first opportunity to score to start the second period. In the 50' Hannah Mares was just feet away from scoring the go-ahead header off a crossing pass from Alex Hutton. Mares' attempt sailed just over the target, keeping the game scoreless. Washburn was able to break the scoreless affair just two minutes later in the 52' when Khloe Schuckman benefitted from a deflected clearance attempt. Isabel Robben was able to redirect the close-range shot, but not enough to push it off target.
It was the first loss for FHSU at home in Tyson John's two years of coaching the program, snapping a 21-match unbeaten streak at home.
The Tigers will finish out their regular season on Sunday (Oct. 29) with a road trip to Nebraska-Kearney. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Tigers look to get back on the winning track and bolster their case for another NCAA Tournament berth in a couple of weeks. For now, they are guaranteed to finish among the top four in the MIAA standings and will host a first-round game for the MIAA Tournament next Friday.
