🏀TMP sweeps Hoxie in return to the hardwood

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys and girls basketball teams shook off some early rust after more than 25 days off as they completed a doubleheader sweep of Hoxie Tuesday night in Hays.

Girls: TMP 39, Hoxie 30
The TMP Lady Monarchs really struggled in the opening frame Tuesday missing their first 12 field goal attempts before they were able to rally for a 39-30 victory.

Hoxie scored the game’s first 11 points while the Monarchs (5-2, 3-0 MCL) were held scoreless in the first quarter.

Down 11-0 Sophia Balthazor hit a pair of three pointers that helped sparked the Monarchs offense in the second quarter as they outscored Hoxie (4-3, 2-1 MCL) 18-5 in the second quarter and led 18-16 at the halftime break.

Balthazor scored eight of her team-high 10 points in the second frame.

Megan Hamel opened the second half with a three pointer to put TMP up 21-16.

Jessica Herrman came off the bench and added a second high six points helping TMP build a 29-20 lead through three quarters.

Back-to-back Jaci VonLintel field goals put TMP on top by 11 twice to open the fourth quarter but Hoxie was able to keep it close, closing within four down the stretch but the Monarchs were able to hold on for the 39-30 win.

Balthazor led all scorers with 10 points and Jaci VonLintel, in her first action of the season added nine points and nine rebounds.

Boys: TMP 60, Hoxie 42
The TMP boys were led by three players in double-figures and Hoxie to just 10 combined points in the second and third quarter and they picked up a 60-42 win.

Hoxie jumped out to an early 4-0 lead but TMP (4-2, 3-0 MCL)answered back with five quick points, capped off by the first of two first quarter three pointers by Kenton Ginther to put TMP up 5-4 and they would never trail again.

The high-scoring first quarter saw TMP lead by as many as seven in the opening frame at 17-10 on an Andrew Schwartz three-pointer. Hoxie (4-3, 1-2 MCL) answered with a 7-0 run tying the game at 17 but a Landon Rozean layup on an inbounds play gave TMP the lead for good at 19-17. They lead 19-18 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter TMP outscored Hoxie 13-3 to take a 32-21 lead into the halftime break.

In that second quarter Schwartz scored five of his career-high 13 points.

The third quarter was much the same for TMP. The Monarchs outscored Hoxie 24-7 with Gavin Unrein scoring the final five points of the quarter to put TMP up 50-28.

In the fourth quarter TMP led by as many as 24 on their way to the 60-42 win.

Dylan Werth led all scorers for TMP with 14 points. Schwartz added 13 points and Jace Wentling chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.

Up next for the Monarchs, they will travel to Ellis for a rivalry game with the Railroaders.
