Gary Stephen Sack, 82, Hays, died Thursday, July 20, 2023 at his home surrounded by family.

He was born January 16, 1941 in Hays, the son of Peter Paul and Anna (Brungardt) Sack. He attended Yocemento Grade School and graduated from Hays High School.

From 1959 until 1965, he served in the Kansas Army National Guard, and on May 5, 1962 he was united in marriage to Joyce M. Hallum in Muskogee, Oklahoma, a union that lasted that spanned 61 years of marriage.

Gary worked in the oil fields, for Service Master and Travenol, and was a lifelong farmer and rancher.

His memberships included St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays American Legion Post #173, Ellis County Home Administration Board, Ellis County Pork Producers, Big Creek Township Board, 4-H Club, the Ellis County Farm Bureau Board, serving as president for eight years, and FFA in high school.

Gary enjoyed collecting glass and metal horses since childhood and gathering with friends every Sunday morning.

Survivors include his wife Joyce of the home, two sons, Gary Sack, Jr. and wife Maureen of Warren, MI and Jeff Sack and wife Angie of Hays, three daughters, Janet Ehrlich and husband Melvin of Victoria, Susan Rajewski and husband Bill of Vincent, and Rose Turner and husband Barton of Pinellas Park, FL, three sisters, Karen Burden of Lakin, Yvonne Randolph and husband Rich of Surprise, AZ, and Elaine Sack of Bakersfield, CA, a brother-in-law, Joe Meier, Jr. of Bakersfield, CA, 11 grandchildren, Stephen Sack and wife Crystal, Danielle Gorham and husband Chad, Rick Ehrlich, Bobbi Rubeck and husband Greg, Benjamin Rajewski, Emily Louis, Gary Sack III, Jacob Sack, Dustin Rajewski, Kimberly Sack, and Brooke Turner, four great-grandchildren, Noah Sack, Elizabeth Stephenson, Nathaniel and Abigail Rubeck, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Carol Meier, brother-in-law, Jerry Burden, and a niece, Becky Burden.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 on Monday and from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 on Tuesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Recitation of the rosary will be at 6:00 p.m. followed by a vigil service at 6:30 p.m., all on Monday at the funeral home.
