The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs picked up their first win ofthe season Friday and will play in the fourth place game of the Hays City Shootout Saturday while the TMP boys suffered their second straight loss and will play for seventh on Saturday.
GIRLS: TMP 59, Newton 33
The TMP Lady Monarchs led wire-to-wire and used a pair of
big offensive runs on their way to a 59-33 win over Newton in the consolation semifinals
of the Hays City Shootout Friday at Hays High School.
The Monarchs (1-1) opened the game on a 5-1 run before TMP鈥檚 Brooke Koenigsman scored 10 straight points for TMP as they built a 15-7 lead early in the second quarter.
Koenigsman finished with a game-high 23 points for TMP.
Newton (0-2) was able to briefly close TMP鈥檚 lead down to just four but the Monarchs answered with a 17-2 run that ended the first half with TMP leading 32-13.
TMP then strung together a 17-6 run to open the second half and never looked back in a 59-33 victory.
Along with Koenigsman鈥檚 22 points, Teagan Gottschalk recording a career-high nine points and six rebounds. Claire Schippers also added nine points for TMP.
The Monarchs will take on Manhattan in the 1:30 p.m. fourth place game at Hays Middle School on Saturday.
BOYS: Newton 62, TMP 45
For a second game in-a-row the TMP boys could not overcome a
slow start as they fall to Newton 62-45 Friday.
Newton opened the game on an 8-0 before TMP cut the deficit to three on back-to-back field goals from Ian Nehls and Caden Dinkel.
Dinkel made a career-high five three pointers and led all scorers with 18 points.
Every time TMP was able to close the deficit Newton had an answer.
TMP closed with four at 14-10 but Newton ended the first and opened the second quarter on an 11-0 run taking a 25-10.
Newton led 31-20 at halftime.
The Monarchs pulled within nine early in the third quarter before Newton were once again able to extend their lead and the Railers pulled away in a 62-45 win.
TMP will take on Sunrise Christian in the seventh-place game at 11:45 a.m. Saturday.
