馃弨 Hays girls and boys win WAC titles on senior night

HAYS - Hays closed out their home schedule in the regular season by hosting Dodge City on senior night.

The Hays girls honored Brygette Ross and the boys honored Edwin Muller, Jack Weimer and Kyzer Fox.

Girls: #10 Hays 45, Dodge City 15

Hays used a 14-2 first quarter run to open up what was a one point ball game at 3-2. The Indians never trailed in the game on their way to a 45-15 victory.

Hays scored the first three points of the game and Dodge City never got closer than one point. The Indians closed the first quarter leading 17-4. 

An 8-0 mid-second quarter run pushed the Indians up to a 25-9 advantage. The Red Demons scored the final points before halftime to make it a 25-11 game at the break. Neither team scored for the final 2:10 of the second.

Hays was never threatened in the second half. The Indians allowed no second half field goals and just four successful free throws over 16 minutes.

Hays scored the first nine points of the third quarter and led 34-11 with just under two minutes remaining. A three pointer with thirty seconds remaining in the quarter gave the Indians a 39-15 lead heading to the fourth.

Hays scored the final points of the game at 45-15 with 6:05 remaining. The rest of the game was running clock and neither team score.

Hays has allowed 29 total points in the last two games. Kenlee Winter scored in double figures for the first time with a career high 14. The Indians 45 points were spread out among eight different players. Easha Potts led Dodge City with 12.

The victory gives Hays the outright conference title heading into their final game with Great Bend on Friday. Hays improves to 14-5, 7-0. Dodge City falls to 5-14, 1-6.

Boys: Hays 43, Dodge City 25

Hays scored the first seven points of the game on their way to a 43-25 win over Dodge City to claim the outright Western Athletic Conference title.

The first quarter for Hays resulted in a 7-0 and 7-2 runs to build a 14-4 lead. The Indians led 14-6 after the first quarter.

Hays again scored the first seven points of the second quarter. However after building their lead to 21-6, the Indians didn't score for the final 3:25 before halftime. Dodge City though was only able to ad four points to their side of the score board as Hays led 21-10 at the break.

Hays led by double figures for the entire second half. A 7-2 run during the third quarter build the Indians their biggest lead of the quarter at 30-13.

Hays had their biggest run at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter scoring nine straight points. They twice led by a game high 23 points and win 43-25.

Dodge City's point total is the fewest allowed by Hays this season and the fewest the Red Demons have scored this season.

Jack Weimer scored a game high 12 points. Tochi Okoro scored 11 for Dodge City.

Hays improves to 13-6, 7-0. Dodge City falls to 7-12, 2-5. The Indians close out the regular season in Great Bend on Friday.
