DODGE CITY – The Hays High baseball team swept a doubleheader at Dodge City on Tuesday, winning 10-6 in nine innings and 5-3.
Hays rallied in the opener after surrendering a six-run lead, then held off a late Red Demon push in the nightcap after leading 5-0 entering the seventh inning.
The Indians improve to 4-8 overall and 4-4 in the WAC. Hays travels to DeSoto on Friday.
Hays 10, Dodge City 6 (9 innings)
Hays broke open a tight game with a three-run ninth inning. Kal Lonsdale led off the inning with a double, moved to third on Paxton Shaw’s sacrifice bunt, and scored on an error. With two outs, Beau Dreiling followed with a double to center field, driving in two runs to provide the final margin.
The Indians scored twice in the first inning on a Bennett Smith sacrifice fly and a Jace Dreher double down the left-field line. Hays added five runs in the fourth to build a 7-1 lead, with Lonsdale and Dreher each driving in two runs with doubles. Smith also added an RBI single.
Dodge City rallied late, scoring three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to force extra innings.
Paxton Shaw earned the win in relief, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out three and walking none.
Hays 5, Dodge City 3
Hays built a five-run cushion before holding off another Dodge City comeback attempt in the second game.
The Indians scored twice in the fourth inning on a Cade Jennings groundout, then added three more in the fifth on a Brett Rhoades three-run home run to left field.
Dodge City scored three times in the bottom of the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but Beau Dreiling recorded a flyout with runners at the corners to end the game.
Jennings picked up the win in relief, allowing one hit and no runs over 3 1/3 innings.
